A New York gay<\/a> man<\/a>\u2019s twitter thread<\/a> for Coming Out Day (October, 11) went unexpectedly viral.<\/p>\n

Grant Ginder (pictured above<\/em>) is an author and teacher based in NYC. He\u2019s now 36. On Friday, he posted a story about how his parents first found out about his sexuality.<\/p>\n

A #NationalComingOutDay<\/a> thread! When I was 13, I began collecting pictures of hot men<\/a> that I found on AOL. I kept them on my family’s computer, in a file called “downloads” I thought no one looked at, and I labeled them with the one word I knew to describe hot men<\/a>: beefcake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was 13, I began collecting pictures of hot men<\/a> that I found on AOL,\u201d he begins. \u201cI kept them on my family\u2019s computer, in a file called \u2018downloads\u2019 I thought no one looked at, and I labeled them with the one word I knew to describe hot men<\/a>: beefcake<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know where I learned the word, but at night when everyone was asleep and I was at the computer I used it heavily: \u2018Beefcake in a speedo,\u2019 \u2018beefcake on the beach,\u2019 \u2018beefcake standing under a waterfall\u2019 (a personal favorite).<\/p>\n

\u201c(The pictures were of a very specific aesthetic that if you were gay<\/a> and coming of age in the 90s you would immediately recognize: buff, hairless men<\/a> in red thongs, tanned to the color of Magda from \u2018Something About Mary.\u2019 Herb Ritts, but with more grease and less hair gel).<\/p>\n

\u201cI kept up my beefcake collecting for a good six months until, one day, my dad was driving me to a friend\u2019s house and he turned down the volume on the OBC recording of \u2018Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat\u2019 to tell me he had a question for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not happy. I was going through a very intense \u2018Joseph\u2026\u2019 phase and was conceiving of an adaption of it to be done in our living room, with the help of the six-year-old who lived next door. Still, I humored him. I said, \u2018Yes?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pulled up to a stoplight (I can still remember which one) and, turning to me, he asked \u2018Who\u2019s been downloading all the pictures of the beefcakes?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI froze. I panicked. I thought of water splashing across a set of airbrushed abs.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cLooking him straight in the eye, I said, very gravely, \u2018Dad, I think it was Mom.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cREADER, DR. FREUD, WHOEVER: I BLAMED MY MOTHER. FOR DOWNLOADING PICTURES OF D-LIST FABIOS, WORKING ON CARS IN THONGS.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Mom?\u2019 he said. \u2018Huh. You think I should talk to her?\u2019<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cAgain: panic. Again: airbrushed abs.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo \u2013 she\u2019d probably be super embarrassed if you did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI reached and turned the volume back up on \u2018Go Go Go Joseph\u2019 and he let me. The light turned green, and we drove on.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlash forward to now: I don\u2019t know if he ever talked to my mom, though I suspect if he did it was so they could have a good laugh. I was very obviously gay<\/a> (see: productions of \u2018Joseph\u2026\u2019 in the living room), and if anything the beefcakes just confirmed their strong suspicions.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Mom! Mea culpa!<\/em> I panicked, and I\u2019m sorry about that! A braver kid would\u2019ve said, \u2018fuck<\/a> it, those beefcakes are MINE.\u2019 But alas, I was 13. I wasn\u2019t ready. Coming out is hard, and it\u2019s something that as LGBTQ+ people we have to do every day, in a million different ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo: thank you, Mom, for taking the heat, and thank you, Dad, for suppressing your smirk for long enough that I was convinced that you believed me. I am 36 now. I\u2019m out, happy, and in love, and that\u2019s in no small part because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

A short while after posting the initial thread, Ginder posted an update.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother just called. \u2018There was one of a man<\/a> on a motorcycle,\u2019 she said. \u2018You had excellent taste.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The thread has been liked tens of thousands of times and prompted thousands of comments.<\/p>\n

Some have shared their own stories of hiding illicit images.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was 13 I thought the best place to hide the ladies<\/a>\u2019 lingerie catalogs was under the bottom drawer of my school desk. Yeah\u2026 that didn\u2019t work either.\u201d<\/p>\n

One woman<\/a> says her brother hid his porn, \u201cUnder the mattress of our parents\u2019 bed. In dad\u2019s side. The boy<\/a> was a genius.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others said Ginder\u2019s dad had handled the situation admirably.<\/p>\n

Ginder, who is the author of books including Honestly, We Meant Well<\/em>, told Queerty he was \u201cabsolutely\u201d surprised the thread had proved so popular.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always think of Twitter as this void where I can shout things, but I never really expect that anyone cares what I\u2019m shouting about, so to speak.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think what surprised me more than the thread\u2019s popularity, though, were the incredible responses I started getting from people who shared similar experiences (the Internet in the 90s, as it turns out, was pretty perilous).<\/p>\n

\u201cComing out is a weird, fraught, terrifying experience, but it\u2019s also a universal one that we as members of the LGBTQ+ community share. This whole Twitter business has reminded me of that, and that\u2019s a powerful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
