Compelling new study offers yet another reason to delete your Grindr account<\/b><\/p>\n

A new study<\/a> out of the University of Waterloo offers yet another reason to delete Grindr from your phone.<\/p>\n

According to researchers, the popular hookup app is giving men<\/a> severe body image issues, especially when it comes to how they feel about their weight.<\/p>\n

13 Grindr users from various cities around the Greater Toronto Area talked to researchers about how the app has negatively impacted the images they have of themselves.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cWe were surprised to find that weight stigma is perpetuated by individual users and embedded within the app\u2019s information architecture,\u201d says Eric Filice, a public health doctoral candidate and lead author of the study.<\/p>\n

The study reports:<\/p>\n

\n

For example, because Grindr facilitates anonymity more than other apps (it doesn\u2019t require a name or link to other social media platforms), and because its pre-set body descriptions don\u2019t acknowledge being overweight (you can be \u2018toned,\u2019 \u2018average,\u2019 \u2018large,\u2019 \u2018muscular,\u2019 \u2018slim\u2019 or \u2018stocky\u2019), most participants in the study perceived being overweight as a stigma.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cParticipants recalled their body weight or shape being scrutinized for allegedly being incompatible with their gender expression or preferred position during intercourse,\u201d explains Filice.<\/p>\n

Researchers found user\u2019s dissatisfaction with their own bodies was the result of the app\u2019s emphasis on sexual objectification and appearance comparisons.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t help that because Grindr exists to connect users for dating or sex<\/a>, physical appearance bears greater cultural salience,\u201d Filice says.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople often compare their candid, in-person appearance to the meticulously curated or digitally altered appearances of others they encounter online.\u201d<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s the solution? Aside from deleting one\u2019s account, that is. Since, as researchers note, many gay<\/a> men<\/a> \u201csee Grindr as a necessary evil, as internet-mediated communication has served a unique historical role for gay<\/a> men<\/a> in circumventing social, cultural and legal barriers to making connections in public spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cHealth promotion strategists should focus on patterns in app use that are most harmful and orient their interventions accordingly,\u201d Filice concludes.<\/p>\n

He ads, \u201cMuch remains to be done. We still have little insight into how dating apps influence the bodily perceptions of trans<\/a> and gender-nonconforming folks.\u201d<\/p>\n
