A Reddit user is having an identity crisis of sorts, worried that he\u2019s straight despite all the evidence to the contrary.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m 20, and I\u2019ve known I was gay<\/a> since I was like 11,\u201d he wrote in a recent post<\/a>. \u201cBut there\u2019s a part of me that thinks of myself as a straight person \u2018pretending to be gay<\/a>,\u2019 that I somehow convinced myself to be gay<\/a> when I was 11 because I found a boy<\/a> attractive one time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continues: \u201cI know this is totally irrational because I\u2019ve been in a gay<\/a> relationship for 3 years, I regularly have gay<\/a> sex<\/a> and enjoy it, I don\u2019t have any interest in women<\/a>. But I find it really hard to shake that feeling that I\u2019m just pretending, even though I know it makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when people say things like, \u2018Oh, you don\u2019t seem gay<\/a>,\u2019 it hits pretty hard and makes me feel really uncomfortable because it brings those feelings back to the surface. Is this just like internalized homophobia or something? Anyone have any tips on how to get rid of it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Commenters on the post were quick to point out that homosexuality is not homogeneous.<\/p>\n

\u201cRealize that being gay<\/a> only means you find men<\/a> attractive,\u201d one wrote. \u201cThis notion that you need to act a certain way or not be yourself to fit in with the clique is just plain wrong. You are who you are, there\u2019s no need to feel guilty about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no stereotypical way to act gay<\/a>,\u201d added another. \u201cNo one suspects I\u2019m gay<\/a> because they always say, \u2018You don\u2019t act gay<\/a>,\u2019 and that\u2019s stupid. You don\u2019t need to be feminine or flamboyant or run through a room with a rainbow flag.\u201d [Ed. note: Not that there\u2019s anything wrong with that!]<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we try to find\/identify our community, but we\u2019re not actually a community,\u201d a third commenter wrote. \u201cWe\u2019ve created this community, but we\u2019re not a neighborhood or a family or a tribe where belonging is clear and commonalities are obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n

Multiple commenters, meanwhile, advised the original poster to seek outside support. \u201cA therapist can help you work through this uncomfortable feeling that you know you want to change but are not sure how,\u201d one wrote.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the moral of the story is that we should work harder to separate gender expression from sexuality. Plenty of straight guys<\/a> are feminine, after all, and plenty of gay<\/a> guys<\/a> are masculine.<\/p>\n

Take the commenter who says his boyfriend seems \u201cstraight AF\u201d at first blush: \u201cHis roommates regularly give him sh*t by insisting he\u2019s only pretending to be gay<\/a> to f*ck with all of them, but then they see me over and hear our (unintentionally) loud sex<\/a>, and they [get] the picture. And man<\/a>, if they even knew HALF of the amount of butt<\/a> stuff he is into, they wouldn\u2019t be having those doubts.\u201d<\/p>\n
