The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History covers the history of Korea since 1876, including the Korean Empire, the Japanese occupation, the Korean War, and the postwar rapid economic rise of South Korea. I had made a very hurried visit here during my layover in January 2017 on my way to Tokyo, so I needed to come back for a better look.

At last the LGBT community is finally gaining the visibility in South Korea that it had lacked for decades, fighting both the traditional Confucian sexist norms and the menace of evangelical Protestants. This display is a representation of the community, which in Korean terminology is referred to as “sexual minorities” (성소수자/性少數者). Although legal gender change is an inconsistent judicial process rather than an established administrative one, and same-gender couples still lack marriage rights, recent judicial decisions have increasingly recognized that same-gender couples nevertheless have some of the rights that a married couple would take for granted. I do expect South Korea and Japan to be the next frontiers for LGBTQ+ rights, as Taiwan and Thailand have already led the way in the region and marriage equality is already settled law in most of Europe and the Americas.
