Pride.be – Pride 2025 – Unite, time to protect our rights

This year, the theme of Brussels Pride ? In the Heart of Europe is ‘Unite, time to protect our rights’, a call for unity to defend the rights, freedom, health, identity and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. These fundamental values are increasingly threatened by bans and pressure at Belgian, European and global levels. Brussels Pride is keen to reiterate the importance of defending these rights peacefully and of pushing governments to act in accordance with international human rights conventions. It is essential to support everyone, regardless of their origin, gender, religion, culture, skin colour or disability. The LGBTQIA+ community is still too often the victim of violence and discrimination, whether physical, verbal or online. Let’s unite, beyond differences, generations and borders, to protect each other.

Outside the Bristol City Council offices at Collage Green, Bristol, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 26th April 2025.

About this photograph.

There was a protest by transgenders in Bristol, one of the many around the United Kingdom, in respond to the Scottish Supreme Court ruling.

I went there as an out-of-work freelance photographer to do some photojournalism of the event.

At that time I took this photograph, everyone was still gathering, and the protest was still building up. They were simply milling about while waiting for the start of the march, you can see a few people sitting down, seen on the bottom of the photo.

While they were getting ready, there was music going on, and this guy with a flag on their back, was doing some dancing. They were one of the very few who was doing some dancing, as the rest was really milling about.

The photo was taken more or less approximately 45 minutes before the protest start marching into city centre.

On the 20th of June I had the pleasure of being employed by the non-profit Q-Lit board to photograph their week-long festival of storytelling.

Q-Lit stands for queer literature and everything that encompasses. Originally catering for rural Victorian communities, Q-Lit now wants members from all of the country to make the events truly national.

The festival included panels, a book fair, workshops and lux events such as adult poetry, a night of research presentations, and a comedy night.

Here are some images from the Drag Race vs the Stories We Need panel, featuring Lazy Susan, Patrick Lenton and hosted by Steph Crothers.
