Municipal crews were setting up for the annual Pride Parade when we arrived in the city, but the event was not on our itinerary, so we missed it. As the guide on a free walking tour told us on our first day, Middle Eastern Muslim refugees are not viewed as likely to fit comfortably into Danish society because Denmark is perhaps the most advanced of all European nations in fostering gender equality and women’s empowerment and was the first European nation to recognize same-sex unions and, later, same-sex marriage.
