After One Day In Office, Maryland's New GOP Governor Axes LGBT Anti-Discrimination Regulations

After One Day In Office, Maryland's New GOP Governor Axes LGBT Anti-Discrimination Regulations

Last week, Republican Larry Hogan was sworn in as the brand new governor of the state of Maryland. One of his first courses of action was to withdraw several regulations, one of which is an anti-discrimination amendment (initiated by his predecessor Martin O’Malley) that would have stopped Medicaid providers from discriminating on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Ironically, the new governor’s inaugural address included a message about “tolerance and respect.”

Larry-HoganEquality Maryland immediately called Hogan out with a press release titled “Governor Hogan’s First 24 Hours Start on the Wrong Foot for LGBT Maryland.” It reads in part:

“Equality Maryland is disappointed in the Governor’s actions. To withdraw a regulation that prohibits discrimination in the provision of essential medical services, which also has no fiscal impact, seems contrary to the spirit of inclusiveness touted in his inauguration speech yesterday. We know that trans people in Maryland face discrimination when accessing health care and we should be working to ensure this doesn’t happen instead of overtly condoning it.”

Hogan told the Baltimore Sun:

“We just basically pulled all the regulations that were supposed to be published on Friday,” Hogan said Thursday. “We didn’t like the fact that [O’Malley] was trying to push these things through at the last minute. We’re going to make sure our new … team throughout government reviews every one of these regulations to make sure which direction we should head.”

Hogan also issued an Executive Order for Maryland Executive Branch employees which did not initially include gender identity in its equal opportunity clause. On Friday, Equality Maryland posted that Hogan’s office had done an about-face and re-issued the order to include gender identity.

Last year, Hogan revealed that his stance on marriage equality had “evolved.” Let’s hope he continues to do so in all other areas of equality.

Sundance Report: 'Tangerine'

Sundance Report: 'Tangerine'

  Tangerine-bitches
I have something to tell you, bitch: this movie is awesome!

BY NATHANIEL ROGERS

Indie director Sean Baker and co-writer Chris Berloch specialize in portraits of characters on the margins of society. Baker’s previous slice-of-life film was the still underappreciated Starlet (2012), which traced an unlikely friendship between a young porn star and an old woman she meets at a garage sale.  Their very worthy follow up is TANGERINE (not to be confused with the Estonian drama currently nominated for Oscar’s Foreign Film Category called Tangerines). Again we find Baker looking at places others haven’t thought to look — or at least haven’t looked at with anything like the same affectionate humor and nuanced humanity.

In this case that place is a Hollywood block filled with ex-con trans hookers who still have their penises, their lonely trade, immigrant cab drivers, and the colorful seedy neighborhood they all share. Tangerine is filled with memorable scenes in busted-ass laundromats, car washes, cheap motels with “party rooms”, and of course Donut Time. The movie tells the story of a single event-filled day and night (Christmas Eve) in the lives of Sin-Dee Rella (Kiki Kitana Rodriguez) and her best friend Alexandra (Mya Taylor) who treats her to half a holiday sprinkled donut in the movie’s abrasively funny opening scene.

“Merry Christmas, bitch.”

Tangerine-strut

(Remember that claim that Wolf of Wall Street used the most “f–ks” ever uttered in a movie? I hope Tangerine makes that claim for “bitch”.)

MORE AFTER THE JUMP

Alexandra accidentally lets slip that Chester, Sin-Dee’s boyfriend/pimp, has been cheating on her with a “white fish with a real pussy!” Sin-Dee’s temperature shoots up and she’s suddenly on the street, a thumping beat on the soundtrack accompanying her unspoken revenge plans.

Alexandra, who has other things on her mind including a performance at a bar that evening, chases after her begging her for “no more Drama”. But we already know, giddily, that Sin-Dee will not comply. And so the comedy is off with a bolt in its high heels, dirty fishnets and bad weaves, to find the pimp or, possibly, the white girl. The film’s soundtrack makes hilarious use of music to signify Sin-Dee’s passions. At one point she nearly calms down at a bus stop, classical musical blaring as she waits, but a moment later the house music interrupts, roaring back to life, and she snaps back into full woman-scorned revenge mode.

The rest of the film, which was incredibly shot entirely on the iPhone 5s but looks great, is Sin-Dee’s hilariously crude comic search for the pimp mixed with Alexandra’s evening show and eventually a hot-blooded collision between all the characters and their various story threads. I won’t ruin any of the funny surprises. Despite the seediness and in between the huge laughs, the biggest takeaway is the film’s sweet and salty tribute to an enduring trans friendship. These women have each other’s backs… and weaves when the need arises. Tangerine is the world’s all time best indie Christmas trans hooker movie (give or take John Waters’ Female Trouble, 1981, if it can be so categorized)

May Tangerine find theatrical distribution as quickly as these ladies make a business transaction.

Alabama Gay Marriage Plaintiffs Ask Federal Judge to Clarify Ruling's Scope, Compare Probate Judges to George Wallace

Alabama Gay Marriage Plaintiffs Ask Federal Judge to Clarify Ruling's Scope, Compare Probate Judges to George Wallace

Wallace

The plaintiffs in the Alabama case that overturned the state’s ban on same-sex marriage Friday have asked District Judge Callie Granade to deny the state’s request for an emergency stay of her ruling. The plaintiffs have also requested clarification on the ruling’s scope following the Alabama Probate Judges Association’s assertion that the ruling does open the door to statewide marriage equality.

From the plaintiffs’ response:

Clarification is necessary as the Probate Judges association in Alabama have assumed the position like George Wallace at the schoolhouse door staring defiantly upon this Court’s order reasoning that not all citizens of Alabama are entitled to the same rights and privileges afforded under the Constitution of the United States and that as Probate Judges “it is [their] duty to issue marriage licenses in accordance with Alabama law and that means [they] can not legally issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.” Alabama Probate Judges Association statement to the press on January 24, 2015. It is respectfully submitted that this Court’s order declaring Ala. Const. Art. 1§ 36.03 (2006) and Ala. Code 1974 §30-1-19 unconstitutional for violation of the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment shall meet with immediate defiance and confusion without further clarification.

Stay tuned to see how this showdown in Alabama plays out…

How April DeBoer And Jayne Rowse Became The Focus Of A Landmark Gay Marriage Case

How April DeBoer And Jayne Rowse Became The Focus Of A Landmark Gay Marriage Case
HAZEL PARK, Mich. — On a snowy night in 2011, April DeBoer, Jayne Rowse and their three children were driving in their minivan down a rural road when a truck, attempting to pass another vehicle, came barreling toward them.

“At the last second, he swerved off the road and veered into a field,” Ms. DeBoer recalled. “I don’t think Jayne and I would have survived the impact. It was that moment, that realization, that we needed to get things in order.”

Howard Stern Thinks Sam Smith is a Fat, Ugly, Gay One-Hit Wonder: VIDEO

Stern

Counting down the top five songs in the country on his SiriusXM radio show this past week, Howard Stern served up some colorful commentary on crooner Sam Smith and his hit single “I’m Not the Only One”.

Said the shock jock:

“He’s an ugly motherf–ker…I like that he’s chubby and gay. That’s why I love him. He’s one of those guys I feel like, he’s really good but I feel like that will be his only hit song…that’s how good he is. He’s fat and gay and little girls worship him. That’s when you know you have a good song and a good voice.”

Listen, AFTER THE JUMP

On Thursday, we reported Sam’s split from boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel.

Bobby Jindal Kicks Off Potential 2016 Presidential Run With Anti-gay Hate Group Prayer Rally: VIDEO

Bobby Jindal Kicks Off Potential 2016 Presidential Run With Anti-gay Hate Group Prayer Rally: VIDEO

On Saturday, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal headlined an all-day prayer rally at Louisiana State University in an effort to drum up evangelical support for a potential 2016 bid for the White House.

The Response, as the prayer rally was called, was hosted by the rabidly anti-gay American Family Association and featured various self-proclaimed prophets, doomsday sayers, and other assorted religious nuts as Right Wing Watch points out

The LSU community, which had repeatedly denounced the event in the lead up to this Saturday, showed up to protest the event, the AP reports:

“You’ve heard today is not about political speeches. Today is about humbling ourselves before the Lord. Today we repent for our sins,” he said. […]

RallyOutside the prayer event, critics held a protest, saying the American Family Association, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has classified as a hate group, promotes discrimination against people who are gay or of non-Christian faiths.

Protesters accused Jindal of using the rally for political gain.

“I just knew this wasn’t what LSU stands for. These aren’t LSU values, Louisiana values or American values,” said Peter Jenkins, a 26-year-old graduate student and protest organizer.

Jindal hasn’t commented directly on the views of the American Family Association, which has linked same-sex marriage and abortion to disasters such as tornadoes and Hurricane Katrina.

On Friday, Rachel Maddow devoted a segment of her show to highlighting one of the crazier backers of The Response – Cindy Jacobs. You’ll recall Jacobs as the woman who claims to have a direct line to God and that God has given her special powers – such as the ability to predict natural disasters and raise people from the dead.

Transgender Individuals In Italy Share Stories And Photos

Transgender Individuals In Italy Share Stories And Photos
When he first realized that he wasn’t interested in playing with dolls or trying on his mother’s makeup, he was seven years old, dressed in lacy pink clothing and at that time regarded as first of four sisters. Forty years have gone by since then. Four decades full of vacations, love stories, disappointments and hormone therapies. Today Loris is a respected engineer and has fallen crazy in love with Carla.

They are bartenders, supermarket clerks, hairstylists, barbers and office managers. They hold regular jobs, lead ordinary lives and have normal pastimes. What’s more, they refuse to be pigeonholed into typical transgender stereotypes or the common images of transgender people. Their lives changed naturally, through routes that were never easy, but which were rewarded with happy endings. Their stories vary a great deal, but all share the same common denominator: a desire to show people that being transgender is far closer to what people consider “normal” than many people would think — despite a lack of basic rights.

In order to share perspectives on transgender people in Italy, a new traveling photography exhibit has just opened in Milan. Entitled Il tuo tabù è la mia famiglia (Your Taboo is My Family), the exhibition is supported by ALA Milano Onlus, together with the Casa dei Diritti del Comune di Milano (House of Rights, Milan Municipality). The images were taken by photographer Valeria Abis and capture transgender people at home, in daily life, together with family members with whom they’ve shared -– not without difficulty -– the path that led them to live as their authentic selves.

For some, the path to change was incredibly long and full of suffering. For others, it was far easier than they’d expected, as they themselves admit.

For Sabrina, 34, who grew up in Brianza, finding her true self was an ordeal that began not long after she became an adult. That’s when she left her family, faced with parents unable or unwilling to accept who she is. “I moved to Milan on my own, but I had no idea how to take care of myself. So I started to work as a prostitute.” Her life became an abyss of humiliation and suffering, culminating with drug abuse. When she turned 29, Sabrina decided to reach out and ask for help. After spending a long period in a therapeutic community, she managed to create the kind of life she wanted for herself. Today she works as a hairdresser and has lots of friends. In the photograph published here, she chose to have her picture taken face to face with her mother.

The exhibition was on display during the month of December at the Casa dei Dritti (via De Amicis 10), and from January through the end of the Expo 2015 will be hosted in different municipal buildings around Milan. It was created with the help of Antonia Monopoli, who works at the “trans window” set up by ALA Onlus, an association that provides psychological assistance designed to help transgender people join the workforce. Monopoli also emphasizes Italy’s problems with rights and bureaucracy concerning these members of its society, issues that often make their lives more painful and full of unnecessary obstacles.
