Transgender Heroes, Yes!
On Sunday afternoon, I’m going to a memorial service. The memorial service is for a friend, a teacher who wanted the best for her students, an amazing person. She was brave and courageous and beautiful. She was transgender. My friend knew some very hateful people for over 10 years who made her daily life miserable, and she ultimately took her life. No one was able to do anything to stop the hateful suffering she endured. There is a lack of understanding and acceptance in the United States for transgender people. There aren’t strong legal protections in place and many lack understanding. Making jokes or bigoted remarks about transgender people is often accepted.
Young transgender people are in the news every day because they are harassed and discriminated against and often end up taking their own lives or being hurt, or even murdered.
Anyone can do a quick search to find the horrifying statistics about transgender youth:
And for adults it often gets worse.
It is not Caitlyn’s responsibility to educate misguided people about transgender people. She didn’t choose to be transgender. She did choose, however, to tell her story knowing that she will likely be the target of hate. Even so, she is courageously engaging people who don’t understand and unintentionally say hurtful things. Caitlyn Jenner is creating awareness by giving another voice to transgender people. It takes courage and bravery to talk even though she knows that she will likely be ridiculed and worse. There have been many before her and there will be many more, but right now Caitlyn Jenner is using her celebrity to do make a difference.
As I read about people criticizing social media for calling Caitlyn Jenner a hero, I think of my friend and all she went through. A hero is someone who puts other lives before their own. A hero can come in many forms. Caitlyn is doing a small part to change stereotypes and bigotry against transgender people, after all, you’re reading this, aren’t you? I promise you, Caitlyn’s story is saving lives. Caitlyn Jenner is a hero.

An 'Orange Is The New Black' And 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Crossover Needs To Happen
Sorry, Titus, there’s no pinot noir in prison.
Regardless, a mashup of Netflix’s hit shows “Orange Is the New Black” and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” proves that a crossover episode needs to happen, like yesterday.
Get on it, Netflix.

Chris Pratt Recalls His Bigger Days: “I Was Impotent, Fatigued, Emotionally Depressed”
Chris Pratt had one of the most publicized body transformations when he went from lovable everyman to every man loves him.
The former Parks and Rec actor and current action heart throb revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail what it was like to pack on the pounds for comedy and shave them off for action.
On gaining weight for Parks and Rec:
“I said to the creators that I wanted to get fatter for the role. They loved it. I announced it to the whole cast, and then it became a bit of a game: how fat can I get and how fast can I get that fat. I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m getting fat.’ And then almost immediately I did something else and I thought, ‘Holy crap, I’ve never seen myself funnier.’ And I put the two together.”
And how’d he do it?
“[My wife Anna Faris and I] were drinking a lot of wine and having fun. I was her little Hansel out in the woods and she was fattening me up to put me in the fire. It was like Momma Bear and Papa Bear.”
But the comedy bonus came at a cost:
I was impotent, fatigued, emotionally depressed. I had real health issues that were affecting me in a major way. It’s bad for your heart, your skin, your system, your spirit.
And we all know what happened next:

David Mixner on Denny Hastert: 'Stop Beating Around the Bush,' The Speaker is a Pedophile – VIDEO
Civil rights activist David Mixner joined Thomas Roberts today to talk about the latest developments in the Denny Hastert story. Earlier today, ABC News aired an interview with the sister of one of the former Speaker of the House’s abuse victims, Steve Reinboldt, who died of AIDS-related causes in 1995.
Hastert was indicted in May on charges he paid $3.5 million in hush money to an unidentified individual, a former male student with whom he had engaged in sexual misconduct.
Said Mixner:
“The Speaker is a pedophile. And anyone else who would be molesting a 14-year-old high school student would be labeled a pedophile, and we should stop beating around the bush on this…It is the ultimate violation of trust and abuse of authority.”
Hastert also oversaw the Mark Foley case in 2006. Foley resigned after his improper behavior with pages and former pages was discovered, and Hastert and others were found to have looked the other way.
Added Mixner:
“How inappropriate that he was the one that supervised the Mark Foley case, to begin with…I never heard a rumor about the Speaker when I was in Washington. But we do know this. Ms. Burdge is a credible voice today…she was the sister of a man who was clearly abused by a pedophile who was a high school teacher who children look up to…even if some people knew, when you become Speaker of the House, no one’s going to take you on because – that young man who was abused was absolutely right – who’s gonna believe you?”
