Matt Bomer reveals he could have been Superman

Matt Bomer was cast as Superman in a failed film, he has revealed in a new podcast.

The Magic Mike star says he was cast as the Man of Steel back in the early ’00s on a JJ Abrams scripted film directed by Brett Ratner.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bomer remembered playing Clark Kent opposite Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Adams went on to play the role in the 2013 film opposite Henry Cavill.

‘Brett chose me for the project and then it all fell apart,’ Bomer said. ‘It was a very lengthy process to get the role, I think it was over the course of three months because I went in in a cattle call. It sort of evolved from there.

‘It was a month of, “Okay, looks like this is going to happen”. And then it slowly fell apart. I have zero regrets about that, I feel like I’ve gotten to do such a rich array of roles in so many different things.

‘I haven’t been too locked in… I mean that’s a very iconic role to portray, to suddenly be that character in everyone’s minds forever.’

Bomer said the Superman movie was ‘completely different’ to the darker takes that Superman Returns and Man of Steel took, saying it was ‘very light-hearted’ in many ways.

‘It focused on him much more when he was younger and in college,’ he said.

The White Collar actor has actually suited up as the superhero post the failed film, starring in a 2009 Japanese commercial for Toyota Prius and voicing the character in animated film Superman Unbound.

If he had been cast, he would have been the first openly gay actor to portray Superman in a live-action film. Other LGBTI actors include Ian McKellen as Magneto, Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde, and Anna Paquin as Rogue in the X Men films.

Last year, queer actor Ezra Miller was cast as The Flash – becoming the first LGBTI person to lead a superhero franchise. It will be out in 2018.

Jesus was gay or ‘at the very least’ queer, says theologian

A theologian has claimed Jesus was gay or at least queer, and maybe even transgender.

Dr Reverend Bob Shore-Goss, who holds a doctorate degree in Comparative Religion from Harvard, said he ‘would love to jump into bed with Jesus’  – for spiritual reasons, of course.

‘At the very least, Jesus was queer,’ the openly gay senior pastor, told Vice magazine.

‘He broke the rules of his culture, of heteronormativity. He subverted masculinities and gender codes in his culture. Queer doesn’t necessarily mean sexual orientation, but it can include that.’

He added: ‘Perhaps he was intersex or trans, because he was born without a father, and therefore was born female and took on the phenotype of a male.’

Shore-Goss said St Paul would probably be described as a closeted homosexual today – ‘they didn’t have those words at the time.’

‘There was no concept of sexual orientation, but there was a concept of gender,’ he said.

‘So, in the Bible, when a man sleeps with another man like with a woman, it’s an abomination. See, the emphasis is on a man betraying his status: He has feminized himself. So it’s a gender violation as opposed to a sexual violation.’

Finally, asked whether Jesus was a top or a bottom, he answered: ‘Versatile.’

Watch Young Women Destroy Gender-Based Barriers #LikeAGirl In Under 3 Minutes
A powerful new ad is reminding young women that they can conquer their limitations — like a girl.

On July 7, Always released a video called “Unstoppable,” featuring young girls talking about the ways society limits them because of their gender. The spot is a follow-up to Always’ #LikeAGirl Super Bowl ad.

In the three-minute clip, young girls are asked if they’ve ever been told they shouldn’t do something because they’re girls. Every single one of them responds with a resounding “yes.” “All the time. It’s a constant,” says one young woman.

In a survey conducted by Always, 72 percent of girls between the ages of 16 and 24 reported feeling limited by society because of their gender. Over half of the girls surveyed felt they lacked the confidence to pursue their goals after puberty.

“I can’t really like rescue anybody,” one young girl says. “It’s always the boys who rescue the girls in the stories.”

Always is partnering with 18-year-old actress and female empowerment advocate Maisie Williams to encourage girls to overcome the bullsh*t that gets thrown their way. Williams told The Huffington Post that gender-based expectations and stereotypes can be debilitating.

“These expectations have a profound effect on their confidence, especially at puberty. But I believe there are things we can do to change that,” Williams said. “I know what a big role confidence plays in achieving any goal, and I think it is vital for young women to stay confident at puberty and motivated to pursue their passions.”

Toward the end of the video, the girls are asked to write down the limitations they feel society puts on them. Their answers are heartbreaking:
“Can’t be brave.”

“Girls should be perfect.”

“Girls aren’t strong.”
The girls are then asked to write down these limitations on big white boxes. One by one each girl kicks and punches the boxes, metaphorically demolishing the structures that prevent women and girls from advancing every day.

“I think that you need to keep going with whatever you love to do and do anything you want,” says one girl at the end of the video. “You can conquer any fear you’ve had. Just live your dream and do whatever you want to do. That’s why I love the word unstoppable.”

Here’s to girls being unstoppable, brilliant, fearless, strong — and whatever the hell they want to be.

France swimmer suffers broken nose in anti-gay attack

A French swimmer has suffered a broken nose in an anti-gay attack that forced her to withdraw from a major competition.

Mélanie Hénique, 23, and two female friends were approached by four men as they left a restaurant in Amiens, northern France on 26 June.

‘They asked us for cigarettes but I felt it was not for that,’ she said.

‘We were going to leave but they started insulting us and everything happened very quickly. One of the guys has blocked us, I did not see it coming, the guy hit me, I was completely stunned, I do not know what happened after I saw my friends on the floor. After, we went to emergencies.’

Hénique said she ‘fully accepts’ her homosexuality but preferred to keep her private life private.

However, she felt it was her duty to make public the facts, ‘if only to help all those who dare not complain. It happens too often.’

‘I have been insulted, but have never been hit,’ she continued, without wanting to specify the ‘violent’ homophobic slurs.

‘There was a lot of hatred. Psychologically, it is a shock, I did not expect it at all,’ she said.

‘I went complaint Friday (3 July) in Amiens, where it happened. It was important to go to complain. It is a serious act, homophobic, it is unacceptable, it must be punished.’

Hénique had to postpone training for 10 days after the attack and was a forced to withdraw from the French Open over the weekend.

She won bronze in the 50m butterfly at the world championships in 2011 and has been selected to compete again at the 2014 world championships in Kazan, Russia in August.

Amber Heard encourages other celebrities to come out

It was nearly five years ago that actress Amber Heard came out publicly as bisexual.

Since then, she’s gotten married her The Rum Diary leading man Johnny Depp and continued to work in films including Machete Kills, The Adderall Diaries and the current release Magic Mike XXL.

Heard, 29, doesn’t regret her earlier candor while attending a GLAAD event in Los Angeles in 2010 because she was being true to herself.

‘I don’t want to have to deny my sexuality in order to be me,’ Heard tells The Times of London. ‘But I don’t want to have to be defined by it. I’m fundamentally opposed to trying to edit myself to be palatable or popular. I don’t give a f**k. I fight, but I shouldn’t have to.’

Heard believes other celebrities should come out as well whether they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

Here’s why: ‘I personally think that if you deny something or if you hide something you’re inadvertently admitting it’s wrong.’

Heard worked with Magic Mike XXL writers to write her character in the film about male strippers as bisexual even though ‘my character’s function has nothing to do with her sexuality.’

‘It’s a film about men seeking sexual attention,’ she says. ‘It gives the power position to women.’

Raymond Braun and Matthew Dempsey on Shirtless Selfies and Navigating the Friend Zone: VIDEO

In two new videos vlogger Raymond Braun and psychologist Matthew Dempsey discuss the danger of the shirtless selfie and how to navigate ‘friend-zoning.’

In the first video, Dempsey warns that allowing your social media feeds to become filled with sexy shirtless selfies may have deleterious consequences:

“If I’m constantly seeing that in my news feed what am I constantly, consistently reinforcing to myself? That this is what matters and this is what makes people valuable.”

Braun added that while, “we do appreciate a shirtless selfie we’re just saying that shouldn’t be every photo.” Or as Dempsey put it, “We appreciate a pint of ice cream but we don’t need to eat it every night.”

In a second video the duo talked about friendships between gay men, in particular how to ‘friend-zone’ someone you met romantically. Dempsey’s advice is to the point:

Guess what, you’re probably not going to have the perfect way of saying it because that doesn’t exist. All that we can ever do is just make sure that we’re coming from a very kind place and a very loving place and have that intention set within us. Beyond that we have to surrender any expectation or need to control how they’re going to feel about it.

If you however find yourself on the other end and are being friend-zoned, Dempsey suggests honesty is the best way to go. If you wouldn’t be comfortable being friends with someone you have feelings for, say so.
