Michael Sam plays in first CFL game

Michael Sam plays in first CFL game

Yesterday, 7 August, Michael Sam become the first out player to participate in a Canadian Football League game. The defensive end for the Montreal Alouettes had no tackles in the 26-23 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.

‘I was focusing on my assignments, actually,’ Sam said, according to ESPN, when asked about the impotence of the moment before kickoff. ‘I’m not going to lie, there were some big jitters out there, and I was nervous when I first got on the field. I didn’t get any opportunities to make many plays. I had some good pass rushes, I thought, but close enough is not a sack.’

In 2014 the University of Missouri graduate was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, a National Football League team, in the seventh round. He was cut but picked up by the Dallas Cowboys as a practice squad player. He never made it to the team’s full roster.

Earlier this summer, the Alouettes signed the defensive end to a two-year deal. During training camp, he left for two-weeks to deal with ‘personal matters.’ He sat out the teams’ first five games.

Sam has split up with longterm boyfriend and fiancé Vito Cammisano.

George Takei Once Asked Gene Roddenberry Why Star Trek Wasn’t More Gay-Inclusive. His Answer May Surprise You

George Takei Once Asked Gene Roddenberry Why Star Trek Wasn’t More Gay-Inclusive. His Answer May Surprise You

sulu

In a new video for Big Think, gay icon George Takei shares the story of asking Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry why the 1960s sci-fi show couldn’t be more gay-inclusive.

“I did very privately bring up the issue of gays and lesbians. And he was certainly, as a sophisticated man, mindful of that, but he said – in one episode we had a biracial kiss, Captain Kirk and Uhura had a kiss. That show was literally blacked out in the south, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia didn’t air that; our ratings plummeted. It was the lowest rated episode that we had. And he said, “I’m treading a fine tight wire here. I’m dealing with issues of the time. I’m dealing with the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and I need to be able to make that statement by staying on the air.” He said, “If I dealt with that issue I wouldn’t be able to deal with any issue because I would be canceled.” And I understood that because I was still closeted at that time. I talked to him as a liberal rather than as a gay man and I understood his position on that. So that’s the way Star Trek envisioned our future in the 23rd century, but I think we’re getting closer to that utopian society that Gene Roddenberry visualized, much more rapidly than even the technology.”

American poll puts ’religious liberty’ over LGBTI rights

American poll puts ’religious liberty’ over LGBTI rights

The latest poll gauging support for gay rights in America tells us religious beliefs are still valued over LGBTI people.

The poll asked Americans a familiar scenario: should a Christian wedding photographer be forced to work at gay wedding if asked or should they have the right to say no?

It found 82% of those polled said ‘yes’ and they should have the choice.

Another 10% said ‘no’ and the remaining number weren’t sure.

The full question read: ‘Suppose a Christian wedding photographer has deeply held religious beliefs opposing same sex marriage. If a same sex couple wanted to hire the photographer for their wedding, should the photographer have the right to say no?’, as reported in the Washington Examiner.

A more direct question asked which was most important: ‘Protecting religious liberty or gay and lesbian rights’?’

Almost a third (31%) said protecting religious liberty and only 8% said the same for gay rights.

The poll was conducted by Caddell Associates led by well-known US pollster Patrick Caddell.

The Washington Examiner quoted Patrick Caddell as saying: ‘When asked which was more important, by a 4 to 1 ratio, voters said protecting religious liberty (31 percent) over protecting gay and lesbian rights (8 percent).’

There have been a number of recent controversies around the rights of businesses to refuse LGBTI customers.

A pizzeria in Indiana said it would not provide pizza for a gay wedding and was criticized on social media.

In Louisiana, a bakery refused to cater to a lesbian wedding due to the owner’s Catholic beliefs.

The poll found that two thirds (68%) said that government should not be able to force any business to provide custom to someone against their religious beliefs.

Police Lieutenant Who Penned Disgusting Anti-Gay Letter Gets Slap On Wrist, Shows No Remorse

Police Lieutenant Who Penned Disgusting Anti-Gay Letter Gets Slap On Wrist, Shows No Remorse

Will.Toby

A police lieutenant in Stockton, California, who wrote a hateful anti-gay letter to the editor — which he signed with his name and rank — has returned to work after receiving a slap on the wrist.

What’s more, Lt. Toby Will is showing no signs of remorse and is appealing the reprimand he received for writing the letter calling homosexuality “vile and sinful” and saying it will lead to the destruction of the nation.

anti-gay letterWill was placed on paid administrative leave last month while the police department investigated the letter he wrote to the editor of The Stockton Record in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of same-sex marriage. But this week, Will returned to work after receiving a letter of reprimand.

The Record reports:

Will, a 24-year veteran of the Police Department, said he is appealing the reprimand through the Pacific Justice Institute, a nonprofit legal organization specializing in the defense of religious freedom and other civil liberties.

“Being an American citizen, and one that served in the military and one that has served in law enforcement so long, I’m just exercising my First Amendment rights, which are not negated by my profession,” Will said. “If anything, they’re supported by my profession, and I don’t have a dichotomy in my life where my Christian views are private views. I don’t have that secular/sacred split in my life. I don’t tuck my Christian views away when I come to work.”

Will, 48, insisted that his views do not compromise his ability or willingness to protect and serve all members of the community, regardless of religious beliefs or sexual orientation.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “I have a 24-year track record of being nothing but a professional to all sections of society, even those I strongly disagree with.”

In the wake of the letter, the police department reached out to the LGBT community, but it’s doubtful Will’s light punishment and lack of remorse will do much to improve the relationship between the two:

Nicholas Hatten, executive director of the San Joaquin Pride Center, had not heard of Will’s return to the job until contacted for this story and reacted strongly when told Will was appealing his letter of reprimand.

“He has the nerve to appeal a letter of reprimand?” Hatten asked. “Unfortunately, he hasn’t learned anything. I think the spirit of humanity is to grow and he has proven that he is refusing, that he is using his religious dogma stubbornly. That is not what makes this city great and that is not what makes our community great. He’s choosing to alienate himself from the rest of the community, which is really moving forward together positively.”

Watch a report on the incident from last month below.

Trans People Confront Myths They Hear About Themselves Head On

Trans People Confront Myths They Hear About Themselves Head On

Transgender identity can be hard to understand. In a way, it’s supposed to be since “trans” means so many different things to different people.

In “I’m Trans, But I’m Not…” a group of transgender people confront myths about what it’s like to be transgender head on in order to dispel mainstream misconceptions about their lives. From “I’m trans but I’m not damaged” to “I’m trans but I’m not tricking men into having sex with me — I don’t need to,” their statements are honest, poignant and reveal quite a bit about the daily lives of the transgender community.

One powerful point that everyone should keep in mind?

“I’m trans, and I’m worthy of love.”

WATCH: Michael Sam Makes History with Pro Football Debut in Montreal

WATCH: Michael Sam Makes History with Pro Football Debut in Montreal

Michael Sam

Michael Sam made history last night as the first openly gay professional football player to take the field in a regular season game.  The 25-year-old Montreal Alouettes defensive end entered the game late in the first quarter in the match-up against the Ottawa Redblacks.

Sam appeared in several plays throughout the remainder of the game but did not register a tackle or sack. The Alouettes lost the game 26-23.

The Canadian Press reports:

“I was focusing on my assignments, actually,” Sam said when asked if he was thinking of the significance of the moment prior to kickoff.

“I’m not going to lie, there were some big jitters out there and I was nervous when I first got on the field. I didn’t get any opportunities to make many plays. I had some good pass rushes I thought, but close enough is not a sack.”

Sam, who signed a two-year contract with the Canadian Football League’s Alouettes after failing to make the final cut on the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys or St. Louis Rams, missed part of Montreal’s training camp this summer to attend “personal matters.”

A short time later, Sam’s fiancé Vito Cammisano (engagement ring noticably absent) launched his own vlog.

Following Sam’s debut, retired NBA player Jason Collins tweeted his support and desire to see Sam return to the NFL.

I hope he plays well because a spot with the @49ers just opened up at defensive end. #justsayin t.co/P3CWikuQKc
