Hong Kong trans woman strips naked to protest bad customer service

A transgender protester has been arrested in after she stripped naked on a street in Hong Kong.

But this was no FEMEN protest – she was standing up against bad customer service.

Angel, 34, staged the one-woman protest at around 10.30am on Monday (24 August) outside the Billion Plaza in Lai Chi Kok, where Hewlett-Packard’s customer service center is located.

The woman told the Apple Daily that she spent more than HK$10,000 ($1290; €1121) on a new HP laptop that broke within half a month.

She took the computer in for repair, but the technicians told her they could not find any problems.

Angel then went to HP’s customer service center, but left unsatisfied with the staff’s attitude.

So she did what any rational human being would do – she took off all her clothes in protest.

Wearing only sneakers and a small black backpack, she held up a plastic sign demanding HP executives explain the ‘maintenance incident.’

But the protest only lasted 15 minutes. Staff called the police and Angel was arrested for indecent exposure.

She has been bailed and must report to a police station on 16 September.

Ted Cruz: Gay business owners should be able to discriminate against Christians too

Ted Cruz: Gay business owners should be able to discriminate against Christians too

US presidential candidate Ted Cruz has said LGBTI-owned businesses should be able to discriminate against Christians and vice versa.

The Republican has made his campaign on defending ‘religious liberty’ and he held a rally in Iowa on Friday (21 August), where he brought out Christian business owners who had been ‘persecuted’ for turning away gay couples.

In an interview with Newsmax, Cruz said: ‘Imagine if this were inverted.

‘Imagine if there were a gay florist – now I know that’s hard to imagine, a gay florist – but just go with the hypo[thetical] for a second.

‘Imagine if two evangelical Christians came to a gay florist and they wanted to get married, and the florist said, “You know what? I disagree with your faith. I have problems with your faith.”

‘You have no entitlement to force that florist to provide flowers at the Christians’ wedding. We are a pluralistic nation that tolerates diversity.’

ThinkProgress notes that federal law suggests otherwise: ‘Religion is a protected class. If that hypothetical gay florist refused service on the basis of the customers’ religion, that would be a blatant violation, and he would be just as accountable for that discrimination as other vendors have been for discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation.’

There are currently no federal protections for LGBTI people, but the Equality Act seeks to remedy this.

Rentboy.com CEO arraigned in Manhattan then defends his business outside court

Rentboy.com CEO arraigned in Manhattan then defends his business outside court

Rentboy.com CEO Jeffrey Hurant defended his business Tuesday (25 August) hours after being arrested by federal authorities on money laundering and prostitution charges.

‘I don’t think that we do anything to promote prostitution,’ Hurant told reporters outside federal court in Manhattan. ‘I think we do good things for good people, and we bring good people together.’

The site’s Twitter account describes Rentboy.com as ‘The Original & World’s Largest Male Escort Site’ and has some 11,000 followers.

If convicted, Hurant could be sentenced up to five years in prison and fined up to $250,000. Six others were arrested as well.

According to the full criminal complaint, the company had more than $10 million in gross proceeds in the past five years. More than $1.4 million has been seized from six bank accounts in connection with the investigation.

Users of the site pay a minimum monthly fee of $59.95 to search for a rentboy or masseur on the site by country and city. Escort’s profile pages generally detail the sexual acts each escort is willing to perform and the price.

The criminal complaint calls the site’s disclaimer a ruse. It reads: ‘This site may not be used for the advertising of sexual services or to engage in activities requiring the payment of money for sex or other illegal activities.’

It details several profiles of male escorts which included reviews of their sexual performance and details about which sexual acts took place and how much was paid.

The complaint also mentions that Rentboy.com each year holds the International Escort Awards which are better known as The Hookies.

Chris Christie veers from Republican pack on businesses discriminating against gays

Chris Christie veers from Republican pack on businesses discriminating against gays

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made clear Tuesday (25 August) that he does not believe businesses have the right to discriminate against LGBTI people.

From refusing to bake wedding cakes to taking photos of renting out a venue, the ‘religious freedom’ argument that has been increasingly cited since same-sex marriage has become legal in the US.

Christie, who is against same-sex marriage, believes this is a defense that can only be used by religious organizations.

‘We have a system of laws in this country, and those laws need to be followed. And the fact is, religious organizations should be protected from having to do anything that violates their religious beliefs as a religious organization. That should be protected,’ Christie said at a campaign event in Iowa.

‘But other businesses who want to do business, they should have to be able to do business under the laws of our country,’ he added. ‘When I take an oath of office as Governor, my oath of office is to enforce the laws of the state of New Jersey. Not the laws I like or the laws that I agree with, but all the laws.’

Christie’s view differs from that of other candidates for the Republican Party presidential nomination including US Senator Ted Cruz who has been steadfastly outspoken in his defense of such businesses.

Christie doesn’t find it all that complicated.

‘ …If we don’t want to have a country of men and women but a country of laws, where everyone is treated equally, that’s what we need to do. Religious organizations absolutely should be protected, everyone should freely practice their religion the way they see fit, but businesses should not be allowed to discriminate, no.’

Christie can be seen answering the question at the 10:14 mark in the video below.

Hollywood "Takes Care of Its Own," Unless You Are Trans, Part 2

Hollywood "Takes Care of Its Own," Unless You Are Trans, Part 2
Recently I blogged about some of the challenges that trans people who live out here in Hollywood, a.k.a. America’s Liberal Dream Factory, face when it comes to health care.

Let me underline exactly what those challenges mean. First, let’s look at the big, broad, macro level of Hollywood optics. I’ll use two celebrity examples; let’s make it clear that since I know nothing of their own health care needs or realities, the “examples” are purely hypothetical.

Eddie Redmayne is a talented actor who will appear in the film The Danish Girl as Lili Elbe, one of the modern world’s first transsexual women. Mr. Redmayne is, as far as I know, a cisgender (meaning non-trans) man. If the film was made under Hollywood-based Screen Actors Guild agreements, Mr. Redmayne would most likely qualify for the Motion Picture Health Plan. So we have a cisgender man playing a transsexual woman in a big-budget blockbuster movie who qualifies for his male-oriented health care because… well… he’s human, and a man.

Laverne Cox is an award-winning actress who has appeared on Orange is the New Black, and is an outspoken, eloquent advocate for rights of trans people. Let’s say that she made a film, or worked on a T.V. series under the Hollywood SAG agreement and had enough hours to qualify for health care. She might qualify, but the plan would still be able to refuse her trans-specific health care, in spite of her humanity and legal status as a woman.

Not being an idiot, I don’t think that’s likely to happen, and really, Ms. Cox’s health care is none of my damn business. But let’s make a theoretical comparison to Mr. Redmayne; Laverne would be a trans woman playing a part (trans or not) in a movie or series with contracts that include coverage under the same plan, but whether she gets trans-specific health care is completely up to the administrators of the plan. If the administrators decide that her care was part of that two-word exception “gender change,” they would be within their rights to refuse her.

Mr. Redmayne, playing a trans woman: no problem. Ms. Cox, a real trans woman: we’ll get back to you.

I could pick other examples. Felicity Huffman vs. Candis Cayne. Hilary Swank vs. Turner Scott Schofield. None of these may apply in real life, but they point to a truth; trans people can be refused trans-specific health care under the current Motion Picture Plan PPO unless they opt for an HMO, and even then they are subjected to bureaucratic gymnastics and extra scrutiny.

In all of these cases, actors are selling tickets or advertising for Hollywood by portraying trans identities. Let me put this bluntly: if we are we “interesting” enough for you, Hollywood, to tell our stories and make money doing it, why are we considered unfit to demand the health care we need to sustain those identities you are exploiting?

I’ll say that again. Hollywood is exploiting us while considering us unfit for trans-specific health coverage.

Here’s another example. Let’s say I am a young, recently transitioned female camera assistant. The plan can, and has, refused the hormones I have been prescribed because they are for “gender change;” those two magic words that are “exceptions” according to the MPIPHP.

If I am a middle-aged man who feels a little listless, my doctor can prescribe a testosterone cream for me. If I am a middle aged woman, my doctor can prescribe an estrogen patch or cream for me; the same patches, or cream our camera assistant is refused. A trans man working as a grip would be in a similar fix.

The issue seems to be this; all health plans are watching the culture for cues. It’s easy to find people in our culture who think that trans people don’t exist because we are mentally ill, had smothering mothers or are possessed by demons doing the bidding of Satan. Politicians and bloviating radio rage-peddlers find us an easy target for raising a campaign slush fund or selling worthless gold contracts to rubes; we stir strong emotions, and that sells. We’re yet another group of humans that people who are angry and scared can focus on to anesthetize themselves against reality. It’s hard to hate someone that you humanize, so some people work hard at dehumanizing us.

More subtly, there are physicians and hospital administrators who cynically may see us as a group without any political clout or unified voice, and who may be tempted to stall, complicate or discourage us from demanding the health care we so rightfully deserve. Even my friends who have trans-inclusive health coverage are frustrated by the lack of education among physicians and wildly uneven interactions with organizations like Kaiser Health.

There are also horrific cases of physicians who have allowed their personal feelings to interfere with urgent health needs of their patients. That’s inexcusable.

Most trans people working on films in Hollywood aren’t movie stars. Most of us are working crew people struggling to get by in the modern workplace like everyone else. Those of us lucky enough to have labor unions to protect our health care have just one simple request; give us what we need from the health plan we pay into, when we need it, and listen to us when we tell you that you can do it better for us than you have in the past.

It’s time for Hollywood to truly take care of all of “Our Own.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson predicts Modern Family’s Emmy streak will end this year

Jesse Tyler Ferguson predicts Modern Family’s Emmy streak will end this year

Jesse Tyler Ferguson thinks that as far as the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy goes, the Modern Family winning streak is poised to come to an end.

The ABC sitcom won the prize for each of its first five seasons and is nominated for a sixth time this year.

‘I think if we win there will be a collective moan in the audience,’ Ferguson said on Access Hollywood Live on Tuesday (25 August).

Modern Family’s competition is FX Network’s Louie, the final season of NBC’s Parks And Recreation, HBO’s Silicon Valley, Amazon’s Transparent, Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and HBO’s Veep.

Ferguson seems to think the groundbreaking Transparent (‘a great show’) will prevail and also likes the chances of Veep (‘On fire’) and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Still, he says, ‘It’s great that we’re still in the running.’

Whatever happens, Ferguson will be more relaxed at the 20 September ceremony in Los Angeles since this is the first year since the show began that he was not nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Ferguson did not win in his five previous nominations. His onscreen husband, Eric Stonestreet, was also passed over this year. Stonestreet has only been nominated three times but has won twice.

With 144 episodes in syndication, Ferguson is aware that the show ‘is on all the time. If you don’t like our show i apologize.’

Among those watching the reruns is Ferguson himself.

‘I like seeing how we’ve all changed – especially the kids,’ he says. ‘It’s like looking at an old photo album.’

Modern Family’s seventh season premiere is on 23 September.
