This stunning photo series documents LGBTQ refugees on the Migrant Caravan as they wait for asylum

Raphel Chatelain is a director, photographer, visual artist, and activist who grew up in France and currently lives in Los Angeles.

His latest photo series “Casa de Luz” (“House of Light”) documents Central American LGBTQ refugees who traveled with the Migrant Caravan and took shelter in an abandoned house in Tijuana, Mexico while waiting for asylum in the United States earlier this year.

Chatelain provided Queerty with a few images from his series along with exclusive captions describing each of the subjects and their stories.

Negro

Negro is 17 from Honduras and came in the Migrant Caravan that left Central America in January. He understood very quickly that the ones like him weren’t seen as a priority but instead as a “danger.”

“I’m being told we are the future,” he told me. “So why have we been abandoned and where is the compassion?”

Here he is having a cigarette break on the terrace of Casa de Luz, the abandoned house in Tijuana that the group found while waiting for their asylum papers.

Sharon

Sharon is a Garifuna trans woman from Honduras. She has been rejected by her family for being trans. In her Garifuna community, she is condemned to death. She was being harassed on a daily basis. This is why she is fleeing. Life has taught her to be strong.

Editor’s note: The Garifuna, or Garinagu, are descendants of an Afro-indigenous population from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent who were exiled to Honduras in the eighteenth century.

Melvin

The LGBTQ refugees group have been celebrating each other’s birthdays since they met in the Migrant Caravan. Here I captured a rare moment of joy that makes them forget the misery they are fleeing.

They are celebrating this young man’s birthday in Casa de Luz just before his uncertain departure. They are all singing together as one of his close friends who he met on the road smashes cake in his face. He was very moved and told the group that he hadn’t celebrated his birthday in years.

Tony and Guato

Tony (right) is 22. He made the decision to flee his country in order to finally be free. Free to express himself and live without feeling like he is in constant danger. His dream is to be an artist. Guato (left) is 18. His father was murdered four years ago and he doesn’t want the same to happen to him.

They met along the Migrant Caravan. Here they are in the bedroom they share in Casa de Luz while waiting for their asylum papers. Tony has a ritual of putting on headphones when he comes out of the shower and doing a full dance routine in front of the mirror. Guato saw I was about to take a picture so he struck a pose.

Don Lemon Said a Man Called Him a ‘Fagg*t’ as He Filmed His Show in a Park

Don Lemon Said a Man Called Him a ‘Fagg*t’ as He Filmed His Show in a Park

Don Lemon told an industry conference that a heckler called him a “faggot” as he was doing a shoot for CNN last week.

Said Lemon, according to The Hollywood Reporter: “I was doing a shoot in the park the other day and someone said, ‘We built this country. I can’t wait for CNN to fire your black ass, you faggot.”

Lemon added that Trump’s personal attacks “take a toll on me, on my privacy and safety and security, and the safety and security of my family.”

Commentator Keith Boykin said he’s seen the tape: “I was on CNN with Don a few weeks ago when he mentioned this incident on air in our discussion about racism in progressive places. I didn’t understand the seriousness of it until he showed me the video afterwards. I was stunned by it.”

HRC Congratulates Ron Nirenberg on His Reelection as San Antonio Mayor

HRC Congratulates Ron Nirenberg on His Reelection as San Antonio Mayor

Today, HRC congratulated Ron Nirenberg on his reelection as mayor of San Antonio, Texas.

“Congratulations to San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg on his reelection. The people of San Antonio made it clear they want a leader that embraces equality and empowers voices from every community,” said HRC Texas State Director Rebecca Marques. “Throughout his tenure as Mayor, Nirenberg has stood up for the LGBTQ community and helped expand opportunity for every San Antonian. We have been proud to work with Nirenberg since his first election in 2015 and look forward to another term of pro-equality leadership at San Antonio’s City Hall.”

This last week, HRC has made significant investments to help Nirenberg cross the finish line: knocking on hundreds of doors, contacting thousands of voters and recruiting dozens of volunteers.

First elected as Mayor in 2017 after two terms in the City Council, Ron Nirenberg has been a steadfast ally of the LGBTQ community, including his opposition to anti-LGBTQ legislation in the Texas state legislature this year. During his time on the City Council, Nirenberg played a key role in passing the city’s non-discrimination ordinance barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. As Mayor, Nirenberg created a “LGBTQ Advisory Commission” to help make the city government operate more inclusively. The Commission, which includes HRC San Antonio Steering Committee Chair Luka Rios, has since advised the Mayor on numerous pro-equality policy changes increasing the HRC Municipal Equality Index score to a perfect 100.

Kimahli Powell conducts an underground railroad for the persecuted

Kimahli Powell conducts an underground railroad for the persecuted

Kimahli Powell of Rainbow Railroad

Name: Kimahli Powell, 43

Who he is: Fundraiser, activist, lifesaver

What he’s accomplished: Raised in Canada by Jamaican-born parents, Kimahli Powell knows how he lives in a forward-thinking country that prioritizes equal rights for all its citizens. Not content to simply enjoy his own good fortune, Powell has spent his career helping others, through his work at the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, Dignitas International, and other non-profits. In 2016, he became Executive Director of Rainbow Railroad, leading efforts to usher LGBTQ people out of dangerous home countries to safety and asylum.

There are 70 countries in which homosexuality remains a crime. In 11 of those countries, the punishment can reach all the way to the death penalty. Though the laws remain symbolic in some nations – as encoded sanctions of extreme abuse, bullying, and oppression – the latest country to adopt the death penalty, Brunei, upped the ante, announcing it will enforce the punishment before backing away after an international outcry.

When Chechnyan authorities began aggressively targeting gay men in 2017 – according to Powell, using dating apps like Grindr to entrap men, torture them, and then return them to their families for ritualistic “honor killings” – Rainbow Railroad stepped in, ultimately bringing 42 Chechen men to safety in Canada.

Rainbow Railroad also entered Egypt that same year, after authorities began rounding up citizens following a Cairo concert where two men raised a rainbow flag. They’ve brought refugees out of Syria and Barbados as well: 600-plus people in all, from a total of 22 countries.

Powell recently told 60 Minutes:

The majority of people that we help have told harrowing stories of being hunted down, of being excommunicated by their churches, their families, their communities, and so they’ve come to us really desperate.

Rainbow Railroad’s #60in60 campaign last November aimed to save 60 lives in the final 60 days of 2018.

Why we’re proud: Supporting equal rights is one thing. Flying into hostile territory to locate and rescue those whose very lives are in danger is a whole other level. While Powell stresses that Rainbow Railroad is far from a one-man show – hundreds of staff and volunteers are involved in the operation – his leadership and outspokenness have paved the way for worldwide recognition of the abuses LGBTQ people still face, and the steps necessary to end that abuse.
As he told NBC News:

It’s really personal and scary to see my brothers and sisters internationally facing persecution for being who they are, and so I take it with a point of personal privilege and pride that I’m able to help. If I wasn’t [born in Canada], I could very well be one of the individuals who our organization is there to help.

What should Pride at 100 look like?

Pride at 100 should be able to celebrate the eradication of laws that criminalize same-sex intimacy. It is not cliché to envision a world where Rainbow Railroad, like the Underground Railroad, no longer exists, because people are not living in fear of their lives, and in fact, are also celebrating Pride.
