The Seismic Shift in Irish Values, and One Reason It Happened

The Seismic Shift in Irish Values, and One Reason It Happened
The landslide victory for marriage equality in Ireland caught some conservatives off guard. What happened to the staunchly conservative, almost fanatical Catholicism of the Irish people?

Paul Valleley, a professor of public ethics at the University of Chester, offered some important suggestions. He lists two major reasons. One is that “the Catholic Church has lost its grip on the Irish,” something he attributes to “self-destruction” by the church as a result of priestly child abuse and physical and psychological cruelty by nuns and priests at various institutions of the church, such as the infamous Magdalene laundries.

It is the second reason that I want to focus upon, however. Valleley writes:

Ireland had joined the EU, giving it access to markets much larger than previously when its trade had been predominantly with Britain. That, combined with an influx of foreign investment, transformed Ireland from one of the poorest countries in Europe to one of the wealthiest. Its economy grew so powerfully in the 1990s that Ireland became known as the Celtic tiger.

With that affluence, and an increased engagement with Europe, came a shift in social attitudes. Emigration, so long a potent norm in Irish society, fell away. Brighter and more enlightened Irish talent no longer looked abroad but remained at home and fostered change. The Economist named Ireland the best place to live in the world. “Rising material wealth seems to have expanded minds as well as wallets,” as one Irish commentator put it. Secularism became linked in the public imagination with the benefits of urban modernity and religion was relegated to an association with the poverty of the rural past.

Ireland, according to Seán Ó’Riain’s The Rise and Fall of Ireland’s Celtic Tiger, was in crisis, with “massive government debt accompanied by severe unemployment, immigration and weak labour force participation among women.” But a series of liberalizing market reforms led to “rapid economic growth and, even more significantly, exceptionally high employment growth in the second half of the decade. The numbers employed in Ireland almost doubled between 1988 and 2008, increasing by one million jobs.”

Historically, the more market-oriented the economy, the more the well-being of LGBT people increases. Politicized markets require political power, something sexual minorities rarely have, but depoliticized economies only need an entrepreneur willing to cater to a minority. Soviet-style, top-down economies would never allocate paper for books on gay issues, let alone for a thriving gay media. That required a bottom-up, depoliticized or less-politicized economy, where entrepreneurs only had to buy the paper and find a profit-seeking printer. Even in the McCarthy-dominated 1950s, the United States had publications for gay men and lesbians. In Europe these publications existed since the late 1800s, something not possible in Comstockian America at the time, mainly because postal regulations were used to close down any publication that Comstock deemed obscene, such as information on birth control.

It was the Financial Times that noted the role of material wealth on social liberalism. They wrote, “Ireland’s apparent willingness to embrace gay marriage is therefore as much a product of the Celtic Tiger years as it is a reflection of the decline of the Church’s influence.” With rising prosperity, Irish voters started embracing socially liberal reforms, matching the economically liberal reforms of a few years earlier: deregulation and more individual choice. Women demanded and won liberalization of contraception laws and legalization of divorce.

Sociologist Tom Inglis said of Ireland, “[W]e have all signed up for cultural liberal individualism and a laissez faire approach to civil rights.”

Similar seismic shifts in cultural values occurred in other nations following periods of economic boom. The relative prosperity of the 1950s in America gave way to the social turbulence of the ’60s, which saw the culmination of not only the civil rights movement but the movements for women’s liberation and, of course, gay liberation.

In 1943 Abraham Maslow proposed his famous hierarchy of human needs. He argued that people fulfill lower-order needs first and work their way up the pyramid. The lower three rungs are basic needs, such as food, water, and sleep; safety needs, such as employment and security; and social needs, such as family, friends, and love. The higher-order needs are esteem (respect, confidence, and self-esteem) and self-actualization, which is the individual finding personal fulfillment, self-growth and their understanding of the meaning of their life.

These last categories underline the gay rights revolution. Gay rights were not about access to markets; a closeted gay could still access markets even in a prejudicial culture. It was hard, however, to be closeted yet still have self-esteem and self-growth. Once lower-order needs were out of the way, people clamored for those choices in life that make them individuals — different from others. Economic prosperity creates that demand by filling the lower-order needs. While economic reform is necessary for economic prosperity, it is social reform that is necessary for individuals to live as free individuals.

Many have damned liberal economic reforms because they encourage individualism, the theory being that individualism promotes an uncaring, socially isolated, atomistic culture. Yet studies find that “the tolerance level of the average American has been climbing steadily since the early 1970s.” The reason that tolerance has increased is precisely because people became more individualistic in how they perceive themselves and others:

The increase in tolerance co-occurred with increases in individualistic beliefs such as rejecting traditional social rules around gender, race, religion, sexuality, and drug use. At the group level, tolerance was higher in years with more individualistic language in books and a higher need for uniqueness. These analyses cannot infer causation, but these results are consistent with our hypothesis that increasingly individualistic attitudes may be one cause of increasing tolerance for outgroups.

Rising economic prosperity encourages individualism. With the rise of individualism, it becomes harder and harder to damn those “not like us.” There is no “us” anymore, just many individuals, each with different values and priorities. Intolerance is largely fear of individualism; once you prosper economically, the individualistic genie is out of the bottle, and social change inevitably follows. Depoliticized markets ought to terrify conservatives, for in them social change is born.

Shape Up: Turn Up the Heat

Shape Up: Turn Up the Heat

Derek Jameson

In today’s body conscious “nip n’ tuck” culture, we plug away on fitness machines, pump our bodies full of enhancements, and cake on the creams as if it’s our only saving grace to the glory days. However, at most of our community gym facilities we have two ancient forms of health and wellness at our disposal: the sauna and steam room. These methods have been implemented around the world to great positive effect for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Some may view these two amenities as just a sweatbox they can’t make time for, but a including a session a few times a week can positively affect your health, fitness, and appearance. Whether you like dry heat or prefer to get wet, both methods are extremely beneficial additions to your weekly fitness program.

Sweat!  A deep sweat can relieve stress, relax freshly trained muscles, and soothe aches throughout the body. An important function saunas and steam rooms can provide is the ability to flush toxins from the environment and from our various forms of consumption choices. If you’re hypertensive, this may also help with lowering your pulse and blood pressure. Both forms of wellness can cleanse skin, induce deep sleep, and burn calories. Our bodies already produce collagen and the penetrating heat brings it to the surface of your skin. This helps to aid in elasticity, making your skin look young, fresh, and more vibrant.

Steam rooms also aid with breathing problems associated with bronchitis, asthma, and other sinus problems. The heat opens up the airways, cleanses, and draws out impurities.

Rumor has it, sweating can also help us drop the water weight our bodies love to hold onto. Ever look in the mirror and see that extra layer sitting on top of your otherwise finely chiseled abs?  That’s water weight!  Our diets can contain a lot of water-hugging sodium. So, spending some time in the sweatbox can help shed the extra water if you want to look good for the summer pool parties!

A question you may have is “What is the difference between the two?”

The answer is simple: one’s dry and one’s wet!

Saunas provide dry heat and steam rooms give off a wet heat. Both can help cleanse the skin, loosen muscles, and give you all of the health benefits previously mentioned. It comes down to personal preference and the results vary from person to person. If anything, it’s a great time to relax and possibly make a new friend at the gym!

The Phoenix Effecta metabolic bootcamp that gets you in shape fast, is offered exclusively at Mansion Fitness, 7914 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood.

Gay Iconography: All About Alec Mapa

Gay Iconography: All About Alec Mapa

Mapa

Even if you can’t immediately place his name, you’ve definitely seen actor Alec Mapa pop up in any number of television shows and film roles. The Filipino-American actor has left his mark on series including Roseanne, Seinfeld and Friends. You might know him best from his work on Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty, but the openly gay actor is also the proud papa of an adopted son, and an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community.

Mapa isn’t one to shy away from his flamboyant persona, but detractors would be wise not to confuse that for any sort of weakness. Recently, he spoke up on behalf of effeminate gay men in response to comments from Looking star Russell Tovey. His entire Facebook post is worth reposting in its entirety:

“He’s glad he’s not effeminate?
Well the feeling is mutual lady, I’m glad I’m not you.
I kind of feel like this is why I do what I do. Why I’m not just a homo, but A BIG ONE. Being an effeminate gay man still remains an unforgivable sin in our masculinity obsessed culture. I think about all the young sissy boys who return from school after being bullied and shamed day after day, perhaps returning home to the same treatment. I know because I was one of those kids. Was? I still am! I still get it in the neck for being who I am. I’ve spoken to so many non gender conforming youth who have the same recognizable look of despair on their faces . All they need to hear is that they’re fine exactly the way they are. That there’s nothing wrong. That they haven’t killed anyone . That they’re worthy of love and acceptance , AS IS. Perhaps if they heard that they’d stand up for themselves. Perhaps if they heard that they wouldn’t be four times as likely to commit suicide than their straight peers. Perhaps if we were all encouraged to love ourselves from the beginning we wouldn’t grow up to be gay men who treat other gay men like shit. I’m in no way outraged by this. I’ve been hearing this since day I could mince. It’s just disappointing . We experience so much discrimination from the outside world, wouldn’t it be great if we were kinder to each other in our own community? There are a billion reasons to feel actual shame and remorse. Being your authentic, fabulous, faggy self shouldn’t be one of them.
Sincerely ,
Alec Mapa
Professional Effeminate Homosexual for nearly 50 years.”

Mapa’s TV credits are many, with guest appearances including NYPD Blue, The Cosby Show, Dharma & Greg (above), and lots of others. Some of his largest roles were on Half & Half (on which he was also a writer), Ugly Betty as Suzuki St. Pierre and on Desperate Housewives, as personal shopper Vern. Most recently, he’s appeared on ABC Family’s Switched At Birth.

Mapa is a veteran of stage as well. His first big break came when he took over for B.D. Wong during the Broadway production of M. Butterfly. You can see the actor take flight in his show aboard the Pride of Hawaii cruise ship, above. When it comes to performing on cruises, Mapa told Michael Musto in Out Magazine: “On the Atlantis cruises and Rosie cruises; it’s great, but they’re two completely different experiences. On the Rosie cruise, there are children and on the Atlantis, they act like children.”

When he’s not showcasing his classically-trained acting chops, Mapa does just fine charming viewers himself. He’s held hosting duties for shows like Transamerican Love Story, Dancing With Dogs and Gossip Queens. Check out his guest appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race, above.

In 2005, Mapa was presented with GLAAD’s Davidson/Valentini Award, which is given to an openly LGBT individual who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights. Mapa also appeared in a GLAAD PSA about anti-LGBT language and the power of words.

Mapa and his husband Jamie Hebert married in 2008. Together they adopted a five year old boy. Their experience parenting is the source material for much of Mapa’s upcoming Showtime comedy special Baby Daddy, premiering June 12.

Are you a fan of Mapa’s work?

Jason Collins: FIFA 'Cannot' Give World Cup to Russia or Qatar, 'Period'

Jason Collins: FIFA 'Cannot' Give World Cup to Russia or Qatar, 'Period'

Former NBA player Jason Collins blasted FIFA’s plans to host the upcoming 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Russia and Qatar, respectively.

Said Collins to BBC World Service’s program Sportsworld:

Collins2“If you’re a governing body like Fifa you cannot have sporting events in countries… where they have laws on the books that say that homosexuality is illegal, you just cannot give them that power. So whether it’s Russia, whether it’s Qatar, you cannot give them the games, period, until they change their laws or the culture so that people feel comfortable again to live their authentic life.”

Added Collins:

“If you do go, know that as an athlete you have a unique platform and I hope that you’re able to use that platform, that voice, to raise awareness of the LGBT community in whatever country that you’re in.”

Collins was the first openly gay player in the NBA. He retired in November.

Fischer

Following in the footsteps of evangelical leader Franklin Graham, former American Family Association spokeshater Bryan Fischer warned on his radio program of the “moral catastrophe” should the Boy Scouts of America end its ban on gay leaders as BSA president Robert Gates urged this week

Said Fischer:

We know there’s a high degree of correlation between homosexuality and pedophilia. Now the world out there doesn’t know that…it’s no longer going to be ‘Boy Scouts of America,’ it’s going to be ‘Gay Pedophiles Scouting for Boys’

There is a hole in the wall with a cock sticking out and someone in the room sucking away. There are other naked guys that were walking around, some touching themselves, some not. There is a lot of action all around. You get the idea.I decided that if I was going to be here at all, I should participate. Besides, the clothed guys watching were kind of creepy. It was also a bit exciting to think that they might be watching me doing something, or having something being done to me.I step over to the cubbies and take off my shirt, my shoes and socks, and look around a bit. Then I cinched my shorts down, over my cock, and step out of them. Oh my god. Here I am, naked in a room with a lot of other guys. There is also a musty smell permeating the room. I’m finding it all titillating, and can feel myself start to swell up a bit.
