The late Philip Seymour Hoffman won his only Best Actor Academy Award for this biopic of Truman Capote. The film follows the famous fop as he works on his groundbreaking true crime novel, In Cold Blood.

But I’m A Cheerleader (1999), available on Hulu and Amazon Jan. 1

Time has been kind to the legacy of this campy cult classic. After initially receiving some harsh reviews from mainstream press, the film has been embraced as sharp satire of “gay conversion” therapy. The film stars gay faves like RuPaul, Natasha Lyonne, Clea Duvall and Cathy Moriarty.

Rent (2005), available on Netflix Jan. 2

Unlike But I’m A Cheerleader, this big-screen adaptation hasn’t aged so gracefully. Of course, the source material was already outdated by the time they greenlit the film version (with an aged mostly original cast). Still, as hokey as it can be at times, it’s a comfort watch that is sure to ignite some nostalgia for fans of the original stage production.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013), available on Netflix Jan. 16

Powerhouse performances from Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner anchor this Oscar-winning picture. Although it shines a light on how the medical industry took advantage of the AIDS-crisis, the film has also weathered some criticism for its portrayal of the LGBT community.

David Bowie: The Last Five Years (2018), available on HBO Jan. 8

Go behind-the-scenes of the late David Bowie’s final years as he embarks on a particularly challenging time. This doc follows Bowie as he works on albums The Next Day and Blackstar, as well as the musical Lazarus.

This Sun Halo Looks Like a Portal to Another Dimension: VIDEO

Skiers in Sweden last month were treated to an otherworldly sun halo as they hit the slopes.

APOD writes: “What’s happened to the Sun? Sometimes it looks like the Sun is being viewed through a giant lens. In the featured video, however, there are actually millions of tiny lenses: ice crystals. Water may freeze in the atmosphere into small, flat, six-sided, ice crystals. As these crystals flutter to the ground, much time is spent with their faces flat and parallel to the ground. An observer may find themselves in the same plane as many of the falling ice crystals near sunrise or sunset. During this alignment, each crystal can act like a miniature lens, refracting sunlight into our view and creating phenomena like parhelia, the technical term for sundogs. The featured video was taken a month ago on the side of a ski hill at the Vemdalen Ski Resort in central Sweden. Visible in the center is the most direct image of the Sun, while two bright sundogs glow prominently from both the left and the right. Also visible is the bright 22 degree halo — as well as the rarer and much fainter 46 degree halo — also created by sunlight reflecting off of atmospheric ice crystals.

‘Celebrity Big Brother’: Maggie Oliver Pens Letters To Rochdale Grooming Ring Victims To Explain Reality TV Appearance

Police whistleblower Maggie Oliver has written to the victims of the Rochdale child sex grooming scandal to explain her decision to appear on ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.

The former Detective Constable helped expose the sex ring in Greater Manchester in 2012, which saw young girls being abused by a large group of men.

She quit the force when she blew the whistle on some of her senior officers for their wrongdoings in the case, accusing them of failing the victims. 

Maggie was unveiled as one of the eight all-female housemates as the Channel 5 reality series returned on Tuesday (2 January) night, and during an interview with host Emma Willis, she insisted she did not want to disappoint the Rochdale girls with her appearance. 

“There’s something I would like to say as it’s a burning feeling in me that I really wanted to go and tell my Rochdale girls that I was coming on here because the last thing I want is for them to feel let down by me,” she said. “They are very close to my heart. 

“I have written all of them a letter, so girls, you’ll be getting a letter tomorrow morning.”

When Maggie played down her invitation to appear on the show claiming she hadn’t “done anything special”, Emma insisted her work on the case was very important. 

“I just spoke out and said what I think most people would have said,” she said. “I just didn’t realise it was going to come to this place.”

Since leaving Greater Manchester Police, Maggie has continued to stay in the spotlight with interviews on ‘Loose Women’, ‘Lorraine’ and BBC News to discuss the decisions she made on the case and the on-going work she does to protect girls that have been exposed to grooming.

Last year, she also featured in a dramatisation of the Rochdale scandal, with actress Lesley Sharpe playing her in BBC One’s ‘Three Girls’. 

Tuesday’s ‘CBB’ launch saw Maggie joined in the famous house by former Conservative MP Anne Widdecombe, Boris Johnson’s sister Rachel and ‘Coronation Street’ legend Amanda Barrie.

The series began with a twist that saw only women enter the house to celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage in the UK. 

Female housemates will live together for four days before they are joined by a batch of male celebrities on Friday. 

‘Celebrity Big Brother’ continues on Wednesday at 9pm on Channel 5.

NHS Extends Suspension Of All ‘Non-Urgent’ Operations As Winter Crisis Deepens

Struggling hospitals have been told to continue the suspension of all non-urgent surgery until the end of January amid fears of a winter NHS meltdown.

The National Emergency Pressures Panel, which is chaired by the NHS’s top doctor Sir Bruce Keogh, said the NHS has been under “sustained pressure” over Christmas and needs to free up doctors and nurses to deal with the sickest patients.

It said “high levels of respiratory illness”, a rise in the number of flu cases and an increase in patients arriving at A&E with serious health problems had been noted over the festive period.

The delay that will affect hundreds of thousands patients had already been in force until mid-January, but the panel says the deferral of all non-urgent inpatient elective care will now be extended to January 31.

Sir Bruce said: “I want to thank NHS staff who have worked incredibly hard under sustained pressure to take care of patients over the Christmas.

“We expect these pressures to continue and there are early signs of increased flu prevalence.

“The NHS needs to take further action to increase capacity and minimise disruptive last minute cancellations. That is why we are making these further recommendations today.”
