Transgender rights targeted by multiple ballot measures across the United States

Transgender rights targeted by multiple ballot measures across the United States

Discrimination is on the ballot in Massachusetts and Anchorage, Alaska, with signatures currently being collected for a third anti-transgender ballot measure in Montana

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, released the following statement along with Fair Anchorage and Freedom for All Massachusetts calling attention to the alarming ballot measures targeting transgender rights across the United States.

“Transgender people are part of our workplaces and our neighborhoods, and they need to be able to access public spaces just like everyone,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD. “The anti-transgender ballot initiatives showing up across the country are rooted in the insidious goal of blocking the rights of transgender people to exist in public space and they must be exposed and defeated.”

***

Most urgently, voters will consider Proposition 1 in the city of Anchorage, Alaska, which would repeal portions of the city’s 2015 nondiscrimination ordinance that protects transgender people from discrimination and would require everyone in Anchorage to use the public restrooms and locker rooms that match the sex assigned to them at birth. The vote is taking place via mail-in ballots being sent out on March 12th and due by April 3rd.

“Anchorage’s Proposition 1 would repeal basic protections for our transgender friends and neighbors, and won’t make anyone safer,” said Kati Ward, campaign manager of Fair Anchorage. “All of us value safety and privacy, but Proposition 1 is an invitation for harassment and that’s not how we treat people in our city. Voters should vote no on Proposition 1 to keep the law as it is and keep discrimination out of Anchorage.”

***

The state of Massachusetts will face the first-ever statewide ballot initiative on transgender rights, which will appear on the November 2018 ballot. The anti-transgender ballot initiative seeks to roll back nondiscrimination protections, signed into law in July 2016, which extended public accommodations protections to the Commonwealth’s transgender residents.

“Massachusetts’ transgender nondiscrimination law has been in effect for nearly two years, and it’s vocally supported by every civic and institutional leader across the Commonwealth, from law enforcement to faith leaders,” said Kasey Suffredini, campaign co-chair of Freedom for All Massachusetts. “That’s because in Massachusetts we know that families are healthier and communities are stronger when everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Transgender people are our friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, and fellow worshippers, and when voters are asked whether to continue to treat them with dignity and respect they will vote yes. Yet with the stakes so high, this campaign is working every day until November 6 to ensure our laws stay intact and discrimination stays out of Massachusetts.”

***

There is also a looming ballot measure in Montana, where signatures are currently being collected to place Initiative 183 on the ballot. This ballot measure specifically targets transgender Montanans by requiring people to use the restroom that aligns with the gender on their original birth certificate and forcing people to comply with anyone demanding to see paperwork before granting them access facilities in public spaces, including schools. The Montana legislature debated a nearly identical bill during its 2017 legislative session, which failed to pass committee. Fewer than 26,000 signatures are needed by July to get the measure onto the November 2018 ballot and the ACLU of Montana is currently challenging the initiative as unconstitutional.

***

Anti-transgender advocates behind the push for all three of these ballot initiatives are promoting fearmongering and derogatory myths about the transgender community to advance their agenda. This includes focusing on restrooms despite the sweeping ramifications of revoking public accommodation protections and falsely claiming that protecting the transgender community would make it legal for criminals to enter women’s restrooms. Reporters covering these ballot initiatives must avoid reducing the complexity of these measures to “bathroom bills,” include the voices of transgender people, and reject inaccurate and ugly stereotypes used to defame or malign transgender women.

For more information, see GLAAD’s “Debunking the ‘Bathroom Bill’ Myth” guidebook as well as the MythBuster page on the Freedom for All Massachusetts website.

Snapchat’s Snap Map Is Now Viewable By Anyone On The Web

Snapchat’s Snap Map Is Now Viewable By Anyone On The Web

Snapchat’s Snap Map can now be viewed by anyone through a web browser.

The company today announced that it would be making the feature available online, regardless of whether you have a Snapchat account or not.

Unlike the app version of Snap Map which shows snaps and the locations of your friends, the web version only shows snaps that have been designated as publicly viewable.

Interestingly, Snapchat sees this not just as a means of exploring cities but also as a news source.

By using the heat map Snapchat envisages news organisations using it to grab videos straight from breaking news locations and then embedding them in their articles.

Snapchat’s Snap Map launched to some controversy back in July after it was revealed how easily its users could be sharing their location without realising it.

This effectively allows you to zoom in on ‘hot spots’ around the world where there are a lot of snaps being taken.

As you can see from the embedded map above, this has unsurprisingly centred around many of London’s tourist hotspots including parks, museums and monuments.

George Soros Commits Extra £100,000 To Anti-Brexit Group In Wake Of Attacks Led By Right-Wing Press

George Soros Commits Extra £100,000 To Anti-Brexit Group In Wake Of Attacks Led By Right-Wing Press
Billionaire philanthropist Soros was accused of leading a “secret plot” to undermine Brexit in a front-page article in the Telegraph.

The Daily Mail’s front page the next day told Soros to “butt out” of Brexit, saying: “You can keep your tainted money.”

Now Soros and his foundations have offered to match-fund further small donations up to £100,000 to the Best for Britain group, which wants to keep Britain in the European Union. Soros has already spent £400,000 on the campaign.

He told The Guardian: “I am happy to take the fight to those who have tried to use a smear campaign, not arguments, to prop up their failing case.”

The crowdfunding push has raised £59,625 so far. Best for Britain’s CEO Eloise Todd said: “We live in a democracy, and the right to freedom of speech is precious. Elements of the right-wing press don’t seem to agree.

“The UK’s future with the EU is not a done deal, there is still a vote to come and people across the country deserve to know the truth about the options on the table: one of which is staying and leading in the EU.

“George Soros and his foundations is kindly offering to help match-fund to give Best for Britain more support so we can make sure this message gets out: the biggest decision on Brexit is yet to come.”

— The Telegraph (@Telegraph) February 7, 2018

The Telegraph piece, penned by Theresa May’s former chief of staff, Nick Timothy, claimed Soros’s foundation was trying to bring down her government

It provoked a huge backlash as Soros is often the target of far-right conspiracy theorists who accuse him of being part of a Jewish plot to establish a New World Order, amongst other things.

European Parliament’s Brexit chief, Guy Verhofstadt, accused Timothy of spreading “Kremlin-sponsored conspiracy theories”.

Andrew Marr’s Editor Explains On-Air Thumbs-Up To Minister Penny Mordaunt Was ‘Polite And Human’

Andrew Marr’s Editor Explains On-Air Thumbs-Up To Minister Penny Mordaunt Was ‘Polite And Human’

Andrew Marr was “being polite” to Conservative minister Penny Mordaunt because he is an “actual human”, the editor of the BBC’s flagship politics programme has said after an unguarded on-air thumbs-up prompted a rash of online conspiracy theories.

Mordaunt, the International Development Secretary, was appearing on the Sunday morning programme to discuss the sexual misconduct allegations against Oxfam workers.

As the interview turned to Brexit at its conclusion, the Cabinet minister insisted she was still “chipper” about the process.

As he handed over to Nick Campbell for a preview of the next show, Marr appeared to give Mordaunt a thumbs-up and tell her “that was very good”.

The gaffe was picked up by many watching on Twitter.

Did Andrew Marr just turn to @PennyMordaunt at the end of this interview on @MarrShow and whisper “that was very good”!!!!!! pic.twitter.com/gXjQnAFxbL

— Peter Stefanovic (@PeterStefanovi2) February 11, 2018

What looked to be an unfortunate error was swiftly ramped up to something more conspiratorial.

Some suggested it showed senior BBC journalists were being soft with the Conservative government over Brexit.

The ‘alt-left’ blog The Skwawkbox, which has made repeated claims of BBC bias, was at the vanguard of the criticism.

Journalists who don’t work for the BBC made clear Marr was engaging in fairly standard practice.

Oh god. This is normal. It’s normal for a presenter to say “that was very good” to ANY guest, even if they’ve just worked them over. He’s being polite. t.co/F6bLNCxjg3

— Mark Di Stefano ?? (@MarkDiStef) February 11, 2018

We appear to have reached the point at which people are willing to believe that an unremarkable display of elementary courtesy is evidence of conspiracy. t.co/nTbll4SRyX

— Andrew Mueller (@andrew_mueller) February 11, 2018

Those who are saying this is a “sign” the BBC and Tories are too close – it doesn’t confirm anything of the sort. It’s just basic courtesy. I’ve done plenty of media and interviewers often say something like that to thank you – even if they haven’t met you before. t.co/PLnSObcWRR

— Louise Ridley (@LouiseRidley) February 11, 2018

As did existing and former senior BBC broadcasters.

Just to be clear about Marr giving Penny Mordaunt a thumbs up after her interview “v good” this is NOT unusual or a sign of bias. I’ve done it myself to politicians of left & right loads of times and it is simply like shaking hands at the end of a match. Means zilch politically

— Giles Dilnot (@reporterboy) February 11, 2018

Glad to see you’ve almost got as many conspiracy theorists on your side of the Atlantic…. t.co/Nj6jaowVjh

— Jon Sopel (@BBCJonSopel) February 11, 2018

You can’t reason people out of something they haven’t reasoned themselves into in the first place t.co/AI8PDM4V6e

— Gavin Esler (@gavinesler) February 11, 2018

But it was the Editor of The Andrew Marr Show, Rob Burley, who went to greatest effort to explain – throughout Sunday – what had happened.

Burley has previously spoken to HuffPost UK about the repeated accusations of ‘#BBCbias’ politics shows face.

He argues that licence fee payers are “absolutely entitled to express opinions, express a view, question or criticise”, but that he won’t ignore a mis-characterisation.

This appeared to be the case on Sunday as Burley tweeted repeatedly about how Marr was acting “suspiciously like a human being”.

Well, first up judge the interview itself which was very firm. Second, because of the orthodoxy of all this you wouldn’t ideally do that on air. But it’s a bit silly though I understand why. Third, AM thought off air so just being nice, he thought, off air. t.co/P11no4naYT

— Rob Burley (@RobBurl) February 11, 2018

Caught being a human. Pleasant, friendly, normal. Give it a go! t.co/V9w8rIt0O9

— Rob Burley (@RobBurl) February 11, 2018

Watch as people hate on someone just being nice and friendly and human (as AM is to all guests). It’s tragic. t.co/BLFor8h2lu

— Rob Burley (@RobBurl) February 11, 2018

Not only is @AndrewMarr9 acting suspiciously like a normal person being friendly, he also has “jug ears”. t.co/vrEXLhfBV5

— Rob Burley (@RobBurl) February 11, 2018

It’s called being polite and human and warm and decent Phil. C’mon, give it a go! t.co/d8sPNd50S7

— Rob Burley (@RobBurl) February 11, 2018

At one stage, he wrote:

“I hate to spoil what you see as the final, clinching evidence of a high level conspiracy, but he was just being nice like an actual human as he is to everyone he interviews, regardless of party.

“It’s the truth – though less exciting than your own version, I grant you.”

— Rob Burley (@RobBurl) February 11, 2018

Well there isn’t any such footage because obviously it’s the vast majority of the time off camera. Anyway, I’m off to gnaw my arm off in sheer bewilderment and frustration. .
