long-distance lovebirds

Andrew McLaughlin just surprised his long-distance boyfriend Jeremy Miles with a video marking the year they spent meeting each other in various places. It might be the cutest thing you see this Valentine’s Day.

According to GSN, “they’ve ‘travelled to 14 different cities, 5 countries, spent 192 hours on a plane, 68 hours on a train and everything else in between, all just to see each other’.”

Said Miles: “Everytime we see each other, there’s a whirlwind of emotion, with ecstatic hellos, but heart-wrenching goodbyes. We’ve been through it all 6 times now, and the separation never gets easier, but we can’t wait to do it all again. We’re both studying in university and spend our weekends saving so that we can travel to be with each other.”

‘Generation Gifted’: Five Lessons Learned From The Kids In The New BBC Two Documentary

‘Generation Gifted’: Five Lessons Learned From The Kids In The New BBC Two Documentary

Gifted children who come from low income families show resilience and passion but also self-doubt in a new BBC documentary series.

‘Generation Gifted’ is a six-part series following six highly-talented kids from low income families in some of the poorest parts of Britain.

The first episode follows Anne Marie, from Port Talbot, Wales; Jada, from Handsworth, Birmingham; and Shakira, from Tamworth in the West Midlands. All three girls are in Year 9 and beginning to prepare for their GCSE subjects.

The girls all display a range of emotions – from fear and anxiety about their future, to strong mindsets and a will to achieve. Here are five lessons we learned from the first episode of ‘Generation Gifted’.

1. A passion can be a haven.

Without a doubt, whether they feel confident or not, all three girls show a huge passion for their talent and the subject they excel in.

Anne-Marie loves writing and reading and has hundreds of books in her bedroom. She is one of the top students in her year for English. To her, reading and writing is her safe space. “When I’m reading, I feel like it’s where I want to be,” she says. “It’s not on the planet, it’s within those lines of those pages, that’s where a reader wants to be, because that’s where they feel like they are most wanted.

“I feel like I can’t walk to people, writing gives me a chance to express myself properly. I can write about every single thing in this world and every thing is a new story. If you feel like life isn’t good enough, you can always write.”

Anne-Marie loves to write, but suffers with confidence issues.

Shakira’s passion is art. “I feel happy when I’m drawing,” she says. “I feel like I’m escaping everything around me.”

2. Support can make the difference between success and failure.

For two of the girls in the episode, self-doubt was high and confidence was low. Anne-Marie is often told to speak up more: “Everything makes me uncomfortable,” she says. “I’m not a confident person, I keep myself from thinking about stuff that I’ll probably panic about later on. I upset myself about it and then I can’t read and I won’t even pick up a pen.”

Shakira is also faced with the constant battle of not believing in herself and is often told by her teachers that her self-doubt is something she needs to overcome. At one point, Shakira has to be encouraged to audition for the performing arts show, but battles with her anxieties and nearly pulls out.

When she is encouraged to get up on stage and sing Sam Smith ‘Only One’ for her audition, she makes her friend cry. She later goes on to perform in the school play.

Shakira loves art and wants to be a tattoo artist.

Still need encouragement. Shakira encouraged to do performing arts, but it took her a lot to get into the room and audition. Despite her teacher constantly telling her they thought she could do it.

She went in and sung.

3. Big dreams are the best motivation.

Anne-Marie wants to be a criminal psychologist to “help people” and plans to go to university to achieve this. Jada wants to go to grammar school, the best university and become a paediatrician. Their dreams inspire them to work hard.

Shakira’s dream job may at first seem less academic – she wants to become a tattoo artist, but knowing what she wants her end goal to be, does motivate Shakira to push herself at school, particularly in her art classes and takes onboard constructive criticism from her teacher to make sure she’s the best artist she can be.

Jada wants to be a paediatrician.

4. Children can have resilience beyond their years.

Jada became homeless after her parents separated and now she and her mum and siblings live with her nan. They are currently looking to speak to the council about moving into a bigger house, as she has to share a room with her younger sister. Despite her difficulties at home, Jada’s strong mindset shines through.

“I know it’s going to be hard but anybody can do it if they put their mindset to it,” she says. “Nothing would stop me, I will show them you don’t have to always come from the top end to go to the best school.”

5. Children feel a responsibility to make their parents proud.

The girls are very conscious that their parents want them to harness their talents so they can have a better life than they had themselves and they don’t want to disappoint anyone around them.

Anne-Marie says: “I feel like I have a responsibility to do well and help my family. I am the eldest, I want my family to be comfortable rather than having to live in a small house.”

Jada feels the same: “My mum pushes me and makes sure I always go for the best, go for gold. She will tell me I can do better than that. She will say nothing less than gold, so there is no silver and no bronze for me, she just expects the best.”

Shakira, waiting for her mum during her final performing arts show, says: “I just want to make my mum proud.”

‘Generation Gifted’ begins on BBC Two on 14 February at 9pm.

HRC Endorses Josh Kaul for Wisconsin Attorney General

HRC Endorses Josh Kaul for Wisconsin Attorney General

HRC announced its endorsement of Josh Kaul for Wisconsin Attorney General.

“Over the past year in particular, we’ve seen the crucial role attorneys general play in protecting the rights of all Americans, including the LGBTQ community,” said HRC Wisconsin State Manager Wendy Strout. “We are proud to endorse Josh Kaul for Attorney General and look forward to working with him to ensure Wisconsin is a welcoming and inclusive place for all.”

Said Josh Kaul, “I’m honored to be endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign. As AG, I’ll fight to protect equal rights under the law for all Wisconsinites.”

A former Assistant U.S. Attorney and current litigator specializing in voting rights, Kaul has fought for the equal rights of every American. Kaul will be facing incumbent Attorney General Brad Schimel who is seeking a second term. Schimel joined the suit against the Obama administration’s life-saving guidance protecting transgender students. Schimel also recently urged the Supreme Court of the United States to grant a potentially sweeping license to discriminate against LGBTQ people.  Such a decision would threaten to gut many of our nation’s most sacred civil rights laws – not just for LGBTQ people, but also for women, people of color, religious minorities, and Americans of all backgrounds.

HRC recently announced a bold, proactive grassroots expansion with the launch of HRC Rising — a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. The expansion is the biggest strategic investment in the organization’s 38-year history and will include significant investments in Wisconsin. HRC has identified more than 560,000 Wisconsinites as likely Equality Voters, meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including marriage equality, adoption by LGBTQ people, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Thomas

‘The Shape Of Water’ Is A Forbidden Love Story For Our Times: HuffPost Verdict

‘The Shape Of Water’ Is A Forbidden Love Story For Our Times: HuffPost Verdict

K E Y   P O I N T S

  • ‘The Shape Of Water’ received the most Academy Award nominations this year, with 13 nods, including the coveted Best Picture Oscar
  • Director Guillermo del Toro said he was heavily influenced by the 1954 B-movie ‘Creature From The Black Lagoon’
  • It took three years to develop the sea creature at the centre of the film’s storyline, which Del Toro financed himself. “It had to do very complicated things: One, it couldn’t look like a real, organic thing; two, it needed to be a movie monster; three, it needed to be a leading man; and four – very important – it needed to be a God, it needed to look like a primal God,” he explained.
  • It cost $20million to make – that’s $180million less than ‘Black Panther’.

S N A P   V E R D I C T

At its heart, ‘The Shape Of Water’ is a straight-up (forbidden) love story, albeit with a fishy twist. Well, the course of true love never runs smoothly, does it? But as we dive deeper, director Guillermo del Toro’s latest creation is also a celebration of what it is to be a misfit. Be that Sally Hawkins’ mute and lonely Elisa, her older, cat-loving gay neighbour (Richard Jenkins) or the amphibious creature – AKA ‘The Asset’ – that Elisa falls in love with (Doug Jones).

Thanks to the swampy cinematography – all green hues – we’re fully submerged into Del Toro’s world from the off. By way of her job as a cleaner in a sinister Baltimore government research facility in the early 1960s, Elisa discovers the gilled monster being kept under lock and key and instantly connects with it.

With a ruthless government agent (Michael Shannon) torturing the creature – and ultimately wanting to dissect it – plus Russian spies sniffing around, a smitten Elisa manages to pull off a highly improbable rescue mission, aided by her neighbour and work colleague Zelda (Octavia Spencer). But will the unlikely couple find their perfect ending?

Part B-movie, part rom-com, part horror, ‘The Shape Of Water’ is, unsurprisingly, both hopeful and dark, timeless and timely. In someone – anyone – else’s hands this tale of interspecies romance that goes all the way, could easily have been a creep fest, but Del Toro unveils a beautifully told story of the very best – and very worst – of human nature.

Zelda:

Some of the best minds in the country and they still pee all over the floor in here.

Elisa:

He sees me for what I am.”

In the murky political climate of 2018, where racism, sexism and homophobia are still very much alive and seemingly endorsed by you-know-who, shining a light on what it is to be different – and accepted – is more important than ever.

‘The Shape Of Water’ is in UK cinemas now. Watch the trailer below…

DWP’s ‘Unpleasant’ Valentine’s Day Tweet Is Exceptionally Mis-Judged, People Think

DWP’s ‘Unpleasant’ Valentine’s Day Tweet Is Exceptionally Mis-Judged, People Think

Love is in the air, but what you can smell right now is the Department for Work and Pensions stinking out the room.

At least that’s the collective view on social media after the Whitehall department in charge of benefits decided to mark Valentine’s Day with a welfare crackdown.

Here’s the gift the Esther McVey-run DWP offered less than loved-up couples: the prospect of jail-time.

Claiming to be living alone is one of the most common types of benefit fraud – don’t ruin #ValentinesDay by failing to declare your true circumstances t.co/tZuNYZ5ferpic.twitter.com/ahutOO6NUy

— DWP Press Office (@dwppressoffice) February 13, 2018

Against the backdrop of a huge pink heart, a video reads: “Declaring your true love tomorrow? Don’t forget to declare your true living arrangements too.

“Don’t get separated from your Valentine. Tell us of a change now.”

The tweet links to a story run on the Daily Express’s website under the headline: “Valentine’s fraud WARNING: Crackdown issued on couples who pose as single to cheat taxman”.

Among a series of examples, the piece points to a married Leicester woman who “raked in” £83,370 in benefits by falsely claiming she was a single, unemployed mother-of-two while still living with her husband for one or two nights-a-week. She was handed a 15-month suspended sentence.

It quotes James Blake, of the DWP’s Counter Fraud and Compliance Directorate, saying: “Relationships have their ups and downs but not telling us when your circumstances change is a crime and the shameless few involved are deliberating diverting money away from those who really need it.

“True love may be hard to come-by but benefits cheats aren’t difficult to track down.

“Our fraud investigators are committed to bringing criminals to justice.”

But commentators suggested the Valentine-themed campaign was perhaps a little tone-deaf.

My Little Boy Choked On A Nappy Sack – I’m Sharing My Story So No One Else Experiences That Loss

My Little Boy Choked On A Nappy Sack – I’m Sharing My Story So No One Else Experiences That Loss

Looking back on my Facebook posts I see a picture from five years ago. It’s my son, aged six months, covered in chocolate. It brings back such happy memories about my smiley, happy boy. And then it makes my heart hurt because all I have left of my baby is photos.

On 7th March 2013 Maison, aged seven months, died from suffocating on a nappy sack. My whole world was turned upside down in one morning from an item a lot of parents think is a nursery essential.

Walking into Maison’s room to find him will always haunt me, it’s not something I want anyone else to have to do. He had a nappy sack over his mouth and a few around the top of his cot. I screamed and called 999 but it all gets a bit blurry from then onwards.

I remember not being able to do CPR, I was so scared and in shock. My husband Martyn had to take over and I just stood uselessly watching him.

I remember standing in the kitchen ringing my mum and saying Maison was dead. She came straight over and arrived around about the same time the extra paramedics did. I went in the ambulance with Maison but couldn’t sit in the back as part of me knew he was gone already.

I spent every second hoping I was wrong, hoping my baby would wake up and cry. No-one had ever mentioned the noises someone having CPR performed makes and all these little sounds gave me hope he would be ok.

Martyn wasn’t allowed to leave our home as the police showed up. This was something I didn’t know until much later so I was left all alone and terrified.

I remember someone handing me a chair in A&E so I could watch a huge team work on my baby. A woman stood next to me explaining it all but her words wouldn’t register. The main image I remember is someone saying, “it’s been over an hour” and then the look on everyone’s faces.

I was taken into a side room for them to give me the news. Maison had died.

There isn’t a word to explain how you feel when you lose a child.

My mum and nan arrived next followed by Martyn and his mum. Other close family also came to say goodbye to Maison while we had him blessed.

Holding him was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I was so scared but I knew I would regret it if I didn’t. Once I was holding him I didn’t want to let go, I didn’t want to leave him at the hospital. Somehow, I put one foot in front of the other and made it out of the doors leaving my baby behind.

Maison’s cot had been placed next to a tall changing stand that had pockets. One side had nappies and the other side had nappy bags, cream, wipes, the usual stuff. Health care professionals had seen his room and none of us ever thought it would be possible for Maison to die in there.

I think Maison learned to stand for the first time that day and used the bumper to reach over to the changing stand where he pulled off a handful of bright orange nappy sacks.

Part of me wonders, if I had of known how dangerous bumpers are back then and not had one, would he have been able to reach?

Life as a bereaved parent is full of lots of what ifs.

Since Maison died I heard about other babies suffocating on nappy sacks. I set up my Facebook page Maison’s Memory to warn people of the dangers and to start a petition for there to be a set law on how nappy sacks are made.
I also asked RoSPA if I could help them with their nappy sack campaign. Through them we have been able to share Maison’s story all over the UK to so many people, and hopefully we are making a difference.

RoSPA has had meetings with nappy sack manufacturers to come up with a set of guidelines for nappy sacks. I feel this is a great step towards laws on how they are made.

Some companies have agreed to make nappy sacks only on a roll, unscented and black. We hope that they won’t be as interesting to babies, meaning less babies try to pick them up.

I do hope that there would be a future without nappy sacks, or one where they are made from biodegradable paper or something, but I know this isn’t likely to happen so I will continue to share Maison’s story until every parent everywhere knows about the dangers of nappy sacks and no more babies die.
