AMC’s fantasy drama Into the Badlands begins its third season Sunday night. Set it a post-apocalyptic world after the fall of civilization, the show fallows the battles and quests of the remaining civilization in the Badlands. One warrior is a young woman named Tilda, who fights under the Baron known as “The Widow.” Last season saw Tilda begin a romance with the “Doll,” Odessa. Last season ended with Odessa rescuing Tilda and the two running away together, but both are set to appear in the third season. In the premiere, Sunny returns to the Badlands, seeking a cure for his son Henry; The Widow and Chua wage a bloody civil war; a new threat emerges. Into the Badlands: Sunday, 10pm on AMC.

Season two of Emmy Award-winning and GLAAD Media Award-nominated drama series The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on Hulu this Tuesday. The show continues to paint the picture of the Dystopian Gilead, where women are subjugated and treated as sub-human. Among the core characters are out actress Samira Wiley’s Moira, a lesbian who managed to escape Gilead last season; Emily, a handmaid who was ominously escorted away in the first season; and a new introduction of Sylvia (played by out actress Clea DuVall), who will play Emily’s wife in flashbacks. Hopefully these queer women will be placed front and center for this new season. The Handmaid’s Tale: Wednesday on Hulu.

Trump Administration Plans to Undo Obama-Era Health Care Protections for Transgender People

Trump Administration Plans to Undo Obama-Era Health Care Protections for Transgender People

HHS Secretary Alex Azar

The Trump administration is set to undo Obama-era laws protecting transgender people from discrimination by health insurance companies, doctors, and hospitals, the NYT reports:

The existing health care rule adopted two years ago says that sex discrimination — clearly forbidden by the Affordable Care Act — includes discrimination based on “gender identity” and “stereotypical notions” about how men or women should present themselves or behave.

Under the existing rule, health insurers cannot place arbitrary limits or restrictions on health services that help a person transition from one gender to another. These services may include counseling, psychotherapy, hormone therapy and a variety of surgical treatments.

In the past, many insurers, as they denied coverage for such treatments, cited what they called the cosmetic or experimental nature of the procedures. The Obama administration said that view was “outdated and not based on current standards of care.”

The rollback continues the Trump administration’s efforts in other areas, such as the military and schools, to bar transgender people and remove protections.

Theta Tau Fraternity Permanently Expelled from Syracuse U. Over Racist, Homophobic Videos

The Theta Tau fraternity at Syracuse University has been permanently expelled from campus for the racist, homophobic, and anti-semitic video that got the chapter suspended this week.

The Daily Orange reports: “The fraternity’s expulsion, announced in a video sent in a campus-wide email, came three days after Syverud notified SU of Theta Tau’s suspension. Syverud said the expulsion followed “immediate action” taken by the university within two hours of receiving and authenticating the video. SU refused to release the video, but The Daily Orange obtained a recording of the video and posted it on its website Wednesday.”

The Daily Orange adds:

The chancellor said on Saturday that the investigation of students involved in the video has been pursued with “speed and with vigor.” Since Wednesday, SU’s Department of Public Safety has interviewed 38 people and will interview more in the next few days, he added.

DPS will begin recommending charges and making referrals to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities by the end of the weekend, Syverud added.

Theta Tau had been suspended on Wednesday and issued a lengthy apology and explanation for the video.

The chapter said that the video “was a satirical sketch of an uneducated, racist, homophobic, misogynist, sexist, ableist and intolerant person” and claimed that “the new members seen in the video laughing at the horrible things being said were not laughing in concurrence with these beliefs, but in fact the opposite.

Says one member in the video: “I solemnly swear to always have hatred in my heart for n*****s, spIcs and most importantly, the f**king k*kes.”

The video includes simulations of oral sex, masturbation, glory holes and drug use, and mock disabled people: “He’s drooling out of his mouth because he’s retarded in a wheelchair.”

At one point, another member tells others to “Get together and [talk] about their significant others while drinking different wines and talking in gay girly accents.”
