GEORGIA SENATE CANDIDATE. “I love homosexuals.” ‘Sabrina McKenzie is running against Sen. Steve Henson, an LGBTQ ally and Senate Minority Leader, for the District 41 seat in the May 22 primary. Supporters of Henson compiled a background paper on McKenzie that details numerous anti-LGBTQ views she expressed on Twitter and in YouTube videos. The opposition research was provided to Project Q Atlanta. In the posts, McKenzie speaks out against same-sex marriage and promotes her support of a controversial anti-LGBT “religious freedom” bill that Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed in 2016. The anti-LGBTQ posts remain live. In response to questions about them, McKenzie insisted that she “loves homosexuals” and had a gay brother.’

GINA HASPEL. Trump CIA pick says she would not follow “immoral” orders: ‘In an at-times testy exchange with Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the Senate Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat, Haspel said that the CIA was bound to uphold U.S. law and “American values,” and that the country had determined that such interrogation practices run counter to those values.’

The church said it’s making the change to better serve its worldwide congregation. “As a global church with millions of children and youth, we need to address diverse needs and fortify all children and youth with gospel-centered growth and learning experiences now more than ever,” the church said in a joint statement with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).’

eric schneidermanERIC SCHNEIDERMAN. Andrew Cuomo appoints special prosecutor to investigate assault allegations against former attorney general: “Cuomo, who was among the first to call on Schneiderman to resign, tapped Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas for the job. Singas “will investigate, and if warranted, prosecute, any and all matters concerning the public allegations against Mr. Schneiderman, as reflected in The New Yorker article dated May 7, 2018, titled ‘Four Women Accuse New York’s Attorney General of Physical Abuse,’” Cuomo said in a letter.”

MATT DRUDGE. On Trump’s threat to the press. “I fear the future result of Trump’s crusade on ‘fake news’ will be licensing of all reporters. [Dems already floated this in the senate pre-Trump.] The mop up on this issue is going to be excruciating…”

WEST VIRGINIA. Republicans relieved as Blankenship loses: “A night Republicans feared would end in disaster in at least one state instead produced Senate nominees that party leaders are pleased to run against three vulnerable Democratic senators in November’s midterm elections. In West Virginia, Don Blankenship — the ex-convict and coal baron who had taken aim at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s “China family,” in a reference to his wife and in-laws’ heritage — finished third behind Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who CNN has projected will win, and Rep. Evan Jenkins, the second-place finisher.”

PITTSBURGH. City’s first openly gay boxer makes pro debut on May 25: “I’d love nothing more than to walk to the ring and see members of my community, sh*t, I’d love to see the seats full of drag queens! I’ve worked in this community since I was 14. I love this community. They are my family and to see them come out and support me on this night would be so amazing.”

TENNESSEE. Man says he was sucker-punched because he’s gay. ” He said he was approached by a stranger, who yelled a homophobic slur, and then pushed him to the ground. After Albers stood back up, he said the man punched him in the face.”

MONETIZATION. Black market for YouTube views thrives: “There’s a burgeoning market in social media likes and subscribers across all platforms, not just YouTube. Devumi, a social-media marketing company, which The New York Times revealed had provided millions of fake followers on Twitter to celebrities and businesspeople in the U.S. and U.K., sells 10,000 YouTube views for $64.”

Cynthia Nixon appeared at the 118th annual Legislative Correspondents Association show Tuesday and resurrected an infamous homophobic slogan that appeared in a flyer touting her opponent Andrew Cuomo’s father in his failed run against NYC Mayor Ed Koch in 1977.

Nixon flipped the slogan “Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo” to apply to her race for New York governor: “Vote for the homo, not for the Cuomo.”

The NY Daily News reports:

“Andrew Cuomo is known for dirty politics but I have to give credit where it’s due,” Nixon told the crowd. “His history of cutthroat campaigns, helped inspire my campaign’s new slogan.” …

“His performance as a progressive hasn’t been very convincing of late — you might say he is an unqualified thespian,” Nixon quipped, playing off the comments made by Cuomo supporter Christine Quinn that Nixon was an “unqualified lesbian.”

HRC to Honor Actor Nick Robinson with the HRC Ally for Equality Award at 13th Annual Las Vegas Gala

HRC to Honor Actor Nick Robinson with the HRC Ally for Equality Award at 13th Annual Las Vegas Gala

This Saturday, May 12, HRC will honor actor Nick Robinson with the organization’s Ally for Equality Award at the 13th Annual HRC Las Vegas Gala at ARIA Resort & Casino.

Among his many celebrated roles, Robinson recently starred as the title character of the revolutionary film “Love, Simon,” which was adapted from a groundbreaking young adult novel, “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli, about a closeted gay high school student who’s blackmailed into revealing his true identity before he’s ready. The first major studio film to be centered on a gay teenage romance, “Love, Simon” and Robinson’s critically-acclaimed portrayal of the conflicted Simon Spier have provided LGBTQ youth and adults with groundbreaking representation on the big screen for a global audience. The HRC Ally for Equality Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of those who use their voice and publicly stand up for the LGBTQ community.

Centered on the call to “RISE: Rally. Ignite. Support. Empower,” the 2018 HRC Las Vegas Gala will bring together the most dynamic philanthropic members and community leaders in the Las Vegas and LGBTQ communities. This year’s honorees include Bob Boughner, senior partner at Global Market Advisors, with the Equality Award; trailblazing community leaders and advocates, Jamie and Judy Dahlem with the Community Leadership Award; and FOX5’s Emmy Award-winning news anchor Monica O. Jackson with the Ally Award.

Tickets for the black-tie optional event are on sale now starting at $250 for general admission, $275 for VIP. Table sponsorships start at $2,500 for ten seats. All tickets can be purchased at www.hrc.org/lasvegasgala.

Sponsors of the “RISE” HRC Las Vegas Gala include Presenting Sponsor MGM Resorts International; Signature Sponsors Boyd Gaming, Cirque Du Soleil, Findlay Cadillac, Findlay Honda, Kirvin Doak Communications, Virgen Advertising, and Wynn Las Vegas; Champion Sponsors AEG Presents, Caesars Entertainment, Destinations by Design, and John C. Kish Foundation, with Supporting Sponsors Dignity Health, Las Vegas Sands Corp., PDQ Printers, and Wells Fargo.

Community members and corporations interested in sponsorship, table purchases, donating to the silent auction or volunteering can contact the host committee at [email protected].

In July 2017, HRC announced a bold, proactive grassroots expansion with the launch of HRC Rising — a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. The campaign is the biggest strategic expansion in the organization’s 38-year history and will include significant investments in Nevada.

HRC’s Welcoming Schools Honors Educator Kristen Scott for Teacher Appreciation Week

HRC’s Welcoming Schools Honors Educator Kristen Scott for Teacher Appreciation Week

Post submitted by Kimmie Fink, Welcoming Schools Consultant

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is highlighting the outstanding educators within our ranks. On Teacher Appreciation Day, we are proud to celebrate one special standout: Wisconsin fifth grade teacher Kristen Scott. As an ally to the LGBTQ community, an advocate for human rights and a champion of our program and her students, Scott embodies everything we stand for at Welcoming Schools.

Scott works at Nuestro Mundo Community School, a dual-language immersion school in Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). She has nurtured a classroom environment where children feel proud of their identities, creating events for students including a “Be Who You Are” party and her annual “Where I’m From” poetry slam. She has been instrumental in implementing the Welcoming Schools program at Nuestro Mundo — one of two MMSD schools to earn the Welcoming Schools Seal of Excellence this year.

“[Kristen Scott] consistently takes an intersectional approach, making sure that we are providing access to Welcoming Schools topics to Spanish-speaking families,” said Jennifer Herdina, MMSD Welcoming Schools lead. “Many families have expressed that they are now more understanding of the issues and supportive of the conversations and lessons that Maestra Scott is engaging in with her class.”

Scott has been recognized often for her exceptional commitment and work with students. In 2015, Scott was named Bilingual Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin Association for Bilingual Education. She made Madison Magazine’s M List 2016, a “who’s who” of mentors and teachers making a substantial impact on local culture. Most recently, Scott earned the title Educator of the Year for 2018 by GSAFE, a local organization dedicated to creating LGBTQ-inclusive schools for youth and a proud partner of Welcoming Schools.

We are proud to call Scott one of our own. Teachers like Scott make our vision of schools where all children and youth across the country can thrive a reality. Teacher Appreciation Week is a wonderful opportunity to honor the educators who work with us creating welcoming and inclusive schools because they know it is right and best for their students.

HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is the nation’s premier professional development program providing training and resources to elementary school educators to:

  • Welcome diverse families;
  • Create LGBTQ and gender-inclusive schools;
  • Prevent bias-based bullying;
  • Support transgender and non-binary students.
