Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed the non-discrimination bill into law in July 2016, and it went into effect in October 2016. Opponents of equality used anti-transgender tactics and messages to get Question 3, which would repeal these non-discrimination protections, on the ballot this election. More from WHDH.

Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting Took Place During Bris for Gay Couple’s Twins

The horrific act of domestic terror that took the lives of at least 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue and injured 6 others took place as a gay couple was holding a bris for their adopted twins.

The Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh wrote: “We were just informed that this morning’s tragedy was happening during a Briss for a set of twins adopted by a gay couple. Our hearts and prayers go out to all that were involved including the members of the Synagogue, law-enforcement and first responders. We have witnessed the worst of America this morning in our town Pittsburgh. More than ever we must come together as people and change the temperament of our country.”



The terror suspect, identified as Robert Bowers “told a SWAT officer while receiving medical care that he wanted all Jews to die and that Jews ‘were committing genocide to his people,’” according to a criminal complaint.

CNN reports: ‘Dozens of people had arrived to the Tree of Life synagogue that morning to celebrate Shabbat services. By dawn Sunday, crowds took to the streets of the historically Jewish Squirrel Hill neighborhood despite the rain to light candles and mourn the people killed there. The attack is the deadliest on a Jewish community in US history, the Anti-Defamation League said in a statement. Authorities believe the suspect acted alone. Bowers remains in the hospital, under guard, after undergoing surgery, Jones said. He’s in fair condition. He faces 29 federal charges, some of which are punishable by death, and he’s scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday afternoon.’

The Washington Post added: ‘Saturday’s deadly attack took place against the backdrop of a particularly toxic era in American political and social life. Many Americans believe that the increase in anti-Semitism, xenophobia and racism over the past two years has been stoked by the rhetoric of some of the nation’s top leaders, particularly President Trump, whose ongoing rallies are marked by denunciations of immigrants and the deriding of “globalists,” which is viewed as a code word for Jews. Most recently, he has declared himself a “nationalist,” thrilling some of his followers who identify themselves as white nationalists.’

Trump suggested that the shooting could have been prevented had there been an armed guard inside the synagogue.

Pittsburgh’s mayor had this response: “I think the approach that we need to be looking at is how to take the guns – which is the common denominator of every mass shooting in America – out of the hands of those that are looking to express hatred through murder.”



The Human Rights Campaign’s President Chad Griffin released a statement following the mass shooting:

“This is a horrific attack on the Jewish community that has been motivated by anti-Semitism. Our hearts are with the community of the Tree of Life Synagogue, the first responders who bravely rushed into danger to save lives, the people of Pittsburgh, and all those impacted by this tragic act of hate violence. After Newtown, our nation called for action. After Tucson, Virginia Tech, Aurora, San Bernardino, Charleston, and Alexandria, we called for action. After the shooting at Pulse Nightclub more than two years ago, we called for action. After Parkland and Las Vegas, we called for action. Yet, in the face of these mounting tragedies, many of our lawmakers have refused to act on meaningful gun safety legislation. And it is no surprise how these tragedies so often intersect with vile hatred, this time against the Jewish community. As these politicians fail to act, at least seven people were killed and numerous others injured while gathered in prayer. It’s time for Congress and the White House to act. We need leadership now, not more victim-blaming and divisive rhetoric that could result in more senseless deaths. We must continue to demand action until our lawmakers either hear us — or we have new lawmakers.”

HRC Statement on Mass Shooting in Pittsburgh

HRC responded to the mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, where at least seven people were killed during a prayer service.

This tragedy comes more than two years since 49 lives — most of them Latinx — were taken in a mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. 

HRC backs common-sense gun violence prevention policy measures and policies aimed at addressing the epidemic of hate that has fueled anti-LGBTQ-motivated murder, assault, and discrimination. For decades, LGBTQ people have been a target for bias-motivated violence, and easy access to deadly weapons has compounded this threat. Common-sense gun violence prevention measures endorsed by HRC include banning access to assault-style rifles, expanding background checks, and limiting the ability for suspected terrorists and those with a history of domestic abuse to access guns.
According to Everytown for Gun Safety, more than 33,000 gun deaths happen every year.

Cesar Sayoc’s Lesbian Boss: ‘He Was Anti-Gay, Anti-Black, Anti-Jewish…Said I Should Burn in Hell’ – WATCH

In a jaw-dropping interview, CNN’s Kate Bolduan spoke with Debra Gureghian, domestic terrorism suspect Cesar Sayoc‘s boss at New River Pizza where he was a delivery driver.

Sayoc, 56, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of mailing 12 bomb devices to prominent Democrats and critics of Donald Trump including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Maxine Waters, CNN/ John Brennan, Robert De Niro, Eric Holder, Cory Booker, James Clapper and George Soros.

Buzzfeed News reported: ‘Photos on a Facebook account that appeared to belong to Sayoc, showed him at pro-Trump events in 2016, wearing a MAGA hat, holding MAGA signs, and posting MAGA memes on his social media. Many of his posts were related to his support for Trump. He also appeared to be at Trump’s inauguration in January. He also posted a video of him at an event where Trump was speaking on stage. In one post in September 2016, Sayoc celebrated false conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton’s reported decline in health, saying she was “headed to graveyard” and that “America will celebrate” her death.’

Gureghian said she was “shell-shocked” and “her hair stood up” when she heard he was the suspect because despite his political views and the van he drove he was well-dressed, cordial, polite, and a model employee.

Said Gureghian: “He was anti-gay, anti-black, anti-Jewish, you name it. Everybody that wasn’t white, and wasn’t a white supremacist didn’t belong in the world. That’s what he used to say to me all the time.”

She added: “He knew I was a lesbian and a very proud lesbian and he made it a point to tell me that God had made a mistake with me and that I should burn in hell…my mother brought me up to always believe the best in people and turn the other cheek. I’ve had people not like me because I’ve been gay. I didn’t have to go home with him. He was not a friend of mine. I just hired him. He did his job.”

Gureghian said that she once got a ride home from Sayoc in the van with all the crazy Trump decals on it. She called the van “freaky scary” and said that when she got in the van she made sure to look for a way out.

“He had really appreciated me as a general manager, liked me, but hated me as being a lesbian. So I always wanted to make sure if he ever offered me a ride that I could find a way out of that van.”

Pence Continues Anti-Equality Campaign Tour with Laxalt, Heller and Hardy in Nevada

With less than two weeks until the crucial midterm elections, HRC is exposing the record of Vice President Mike Pence, who is scheduled to campaign with anti-equality candidates Adam Laxalt, Senator Dean Heller and Cresent Hardy. Pence, Laxalt, Heller and Hardy all have long records of undermining LGBTQ equality.

“In races up and down the ballot this year, the choice for Nevada voters could not be more clear,” said HRC Nevada State Director Briana Escamilla. “In a state with more than 600,000 Equality Voters, Laxalt, Heller and Hardy’s long records of rolling back progress and attacking the LGBTQ community prove they are out of touch with the majority of voters and unfit to represent the people of Nevada, who believe in fairness and equality. We need lawmakers like Jacky Rosen, Steve Sisolak and Steve Horsford, who will stand up to the discriminatory Trump-Pence administration here and in Washington, rather than double down on their politics of prejudice. With Election Day in 10 days and early voting already in full swing, we’re on the ground working harder than ever to elect these pro-equality champions and ensure Nevada remains welcoming and open to all.”

As Laxalt, Heller and Hardy align themselves with the anti-LGBTQ Trump-Pence administration, HRC is on the ground mobilizing our members and supporters and nearly 600,000 Equality Voters in Nevada to elect Steve Sisolak as Governor, Rep. Jackie Rosen to the U.S. Senate and Steve Horsford to Congress (NV-04). HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Nevada, and has staff and resources on the ground in the state as part of the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.

Adam Laxalt has made virulent anti-LGBTQ activism a cornerstone of his political career. Laxalt opposes marriage equality, previously vowing to “vigorously” defend the state’s now defunct marriage ban, and supports banning LGBTQ people from serving openly in the military. Laxalt has also supported a license to discriminate in the health care system that would prioritize physicians’ beliefs over life-saving patient care, and opposes the Obama Administration’s live-saving guidance protecting LGBTQ youth facing discrimination in our schools. HRC-endorsed Steve Sisolak has a long career serving the people of Nevada. He is a strong advocate for LGBTQ equality who supports marriage equality and non-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ community in all aspects of life.

While in office Senator Dean Heller has opposed marriage equality and voted against the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” He also voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr Hate Crimes Prevention Act to provide federal protections from hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity. His opponent, HRC-endorsed Rep. Jacky Rosen (NV-03), has been a champion for LGBTQ equality since joining Congress. Rosen has been an outspoken critic of the Trump-Pence Administration’s assault on the LGBTQ community, from revoking discrimination protections for transgender children in public schools, to attempting to erase the LGBTQ community in the U.S. census. She is a co-sponsor of the Equality Act and the Global Respect Act, legislation that would strengthen U.S. foreign policy related to anti-LGBTQ discrimination abroad.

Former U.S. Representative Cresent Hardy (R) received a zero on HRC’s scorecard during his time in Congress. He was a cosponsor of the discriminatory First Amendment Defense Act, and has called for the reinstatement of the failed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy that banned openly gay people from serving in the military. During his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, his opponent Horsford scored a perfect 100 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard, which measures members’ of Congress support for LGBTQ equality and policies. Horsford supports marriage equality and the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s civil rights laws.

Out for Equality in Texas: An LGBTQ Day of Action

Calling all LGBTQ people in Texas! Mark your calendars for THIS Saturday, October 27, for a Day of Action. HRC is teaming up with Equality Texas and other organizations across the state to achieve two critical goals: Mobilize LGBTQ & Equality Voters to the polls during the early voting period, and show up to volunteer for pro-equality candidates.

Here are three easy ways you can participate:

1. GO EARLY VOTE: Wear your rainbow pride colors or favorite HRC gear and head out to Early Vote this week or on Saturday, October 27th when Early Voting locations in your county are generally open from 7am to 7pm.

• Make sure you are registered to vote. It only takes a minute to check your registration status!

Visibility matters, and showing up in campaign offices in your HRC gear or favorite pride shirt helps campaign staff and candidates know that we are constituents that should matter to them.

3. POST A PHOTO: Consider organizing a group of friends to vote early or volunteer together on Saturday. Before you go, download and print this OUT for EQUALITY sign and take a photo at your polling location. Send your photo or selfie to [email protected] along with the names of those in the photo and the city where the photo was taken.
    
4. SPREAD THE WORD: Text 5 friends right now and tell them about early voting and Out For Equality: An LGBTQ Day of Action. Also use social media to help engage more people around you.
