HRC HONORS 70th HUMAN RIGHTS DAY — THE PLIGHT OF LGBTQ PEOPLE AT OUR BORDERS AND AROUND THE GLOBE CAN’T BE IGNORED: Today, we celebrate the global recognition that every human being is born with basic human rights and dignity that cannot be taken away. Yet, as an LGBTQ community, we still have a long way to go to achieving that goal. We need look no further than the humanitarian crisis happening at the U.S.-Mexico border, where the Trump-Pence administration is rejecting those who are fleeing violence in Central America — a good number of whom are members of the LGBTQ community. We will not stop until every member of our community, no matter who they are or who they love, anywhere in the world, is safe, secure, and truly free and equal. Read more at HRC.

TODAY — TRUMP-PENCE TRANS TROOPS BAN BACK AT FEDERAL APPEALS COURT: Today, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear oral arguments in Doe v. Trump — a challenge to the ban brought by GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Despite the string of court victories for transgender troops and recruits, the Trump-Pence administration has continued to appeal the rulings in an effort to force their extreme anti-LGBTQ agenda on the U.S. military. HRC MOURNS THE DEATH OF KEANNA MATTEL, A TRANSGENDER WOMAN KILLED IN DETROIT LAST WEEK: INTO reports that Mattel, 35, an active member in Detroit’s ballroom scene and loved by many, was found dead Friday in her Palmer Park neighborhood “just two blocks from where her transgender neighbor Amber Monroe was gunned down in August 2015.” Mattel is at least the 25th transgender person to be killed this year in the U.S. We must listen to her words and address the factors that continue to foster an epidemic of violence targeting trans people, particularly trans women of color.
