NBC News reports: ‘In an April 4 letter to DOJ Pride released Friday, Barr said he was “troubled” by the group’s concerns, which were raised in a March 27 open letter. He said he directed the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons to “investigate and address allegations of discrimination.” … Along with his letter, Barr also released an overdue Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) statement declaring that no department employee or applicant should face discrimination over race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation, disability (physical or mental), gender identity, protected genetic information, pregnancy, status as a parent, marital status, political affiliation, or any other nonmerit-based factor.’

Colorado General Assembly Sends Bill Protecting LGBTQ Youth From “Conversion Therapy” to Gov. Polis
HRC lauded the Colorado General Assembly’s passage of HB 1129, legislation to protect LGBTQ youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” The bill is now headed to Governor Jared Polis’s desk. In November of 2018, Polis became the nation’s first openly gay man elected governor.
“We thank the Colorado General Assembly for their continued support of this crucial pro-equality legislation that provides life-saving protections for young people across the state of Colorado from the dangerous and discredited practice known as ‘conversion therapy,’” said HRC Field Director Marty Rouse. “Governor Polis has been a trailblazing champion for LGBTQ rights and representation in Colorado and we look forward to him signing these protections into law and his continued leadership on behalf of all Coloradans.”
When signed into law, Colorado will become the 16th state to enact statutory protections for youth from so-called “conversion therapy,” following Connecticut, California, Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Washington, Maryland, Hawaii, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia. In March, Puerto Rico’s Governor issued an executive order protecting minors in the commonwealth from the harmful practice. Massachusetts recently passed similar legislation that will head to the governor’s desk soon. A growing number of municipalities have also enacted similar protections, including at least fifty cities and counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Wisconsin.
There is no credible evidence that conversion therapy can change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. To the contrary, research has clearly shown that these practices pose devastating health risks for LGBTQ young people such as depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness, and even suicidal behavior. The harmful practice is condemned by every major medical and mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Medical Association.
HRC has partnered with LGBTQ advocates across the state including One Colorado to advance pro-equality legislation in Colorado. HRC has also partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and state equality groups across the nation to pass state legislation protecting youth from conversion therapy. NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today slammed President Trump and his administration for refusing to reinstate essential housing protections for LGBTQ Americans across the nation, marking the 100th time the Trump Administration has targeted the community since the president took office in 2017.
In what The Advocate called a “testy” exchange during a House Appropriations hearing this week, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson refused to acknowledge that a simplification of housing guidelines (removing LGBTQ Americans as a protected class) actually targeted and prevented LGBTQ Americans, specifically transgender Americans, who wish to attain quality housing opportunities – including shelters for the homeless.
“There is a systematic and sinister erasing of LGBTQ protections and policies happening at the hands of this Administration,’” said Zeke Stokes, Chief Programs Officer at GLAAD. “Now more than ever, it’s vital LGBTQ Americans and marginalized communities raise their voices and tell their stories. The LGBTQ community will not go into hiding, and we will not be silenced.”
The Trump Administration’s refusal to reestablish LGBTQ Americans as a protected class for housing guidelines marks the 100th time the Trump Administration has attacked the LGBTQ community in policy or rhetoric. Previously, the president or his administration have banned transgender Americans from serving in the nation’s armed services or refused to condemn horrific anti-LGBTQ attacks worldwide. Pete Buttigieg Responds to Use of ‘All Lives Matter’ in 2015 Speech: WATCH
South Bend, Indiana mayor and presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg responded to his use of the phrase “all lives matter” in 2015 following a speech on Thursday to Al Sharpton’s nonprofit civil rights organization National Action Network.
As CNBC reported, Buttigieg made the remark “referencing his administration’s refusal to hand over tape recordings of South Bend police officers that remain the subject of legal dispute, as well as the city council’s request that a local police officer stop selling t-shirts that seemed to make light of the 2014 police killing of unarmed black man Eric Garner in New York.”
Said Buttigieg at the time: “There is no contradiction between respecting the risks that police officers take every day in order to protect this community, and recognizing the need to overcome the biases implicit in a justice system that treats people from different backgrounds differently, even when they are accused of the same offenses. We need to take both those things seriously, for the simple and profound reason that all lives matter.”
Buttigieg told reporters that he’s stopped using it and why: “At that time, I was talking about a lot of issues around racial reconciliation in our community. What I did not understand at that time, was that that phrase, just early into mid-2015, was coming to be viewed as a sort of counter-slogan to Black Lives Matter. And so, this statement, that seems very anodyne and something that nobody could be against, actually wound up being used to devalue what the Black Lives Matter movement was telling us, which is what we needed to hear because unfortunately, it was not obvious to everybody that Black lives were being valued the same. So that is the contribution of Black Lives Matter, and it’s a reason why, since learning about how that phrase was being used to push back on that activism, I’ve stopped using it in that context.”
