MORE THAN 150 LGBTQ COMMUNITY CENTERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY URGE CONGRESS TO PASS THE EQUALITY ACT: In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, CenterLink, an organization that works to support strong, sustainable LGBTQ community centers, wrote: “For decades, community centers have been working with and for the LGBTQ community to fight discrimination. With passage of the Equality Act, community centers will finally have federal protections in place to assist them as they advocate for their constituents and work toward lived equality.” Read the full letter here.
DESPITE PUSH FOR ANTI-LGBTQ LEGISLATION, PRO-EQUALITY BILLS GET HISTORIC HEARINGS IN TEXAS HOUSE: “Having a hearing is sometimes a victory,” said state Rep. Celia Israel, D-Austin (@CeliaIsrael), whose conversion therapy ban was debated for the first time this year, reports Emma Platoff (@emmaplatoff) of The Texas Tribune. One of the pro-equality bills would extend statewide non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ people. Notably, this legislative session, anti-LGBTQ legislators are attempting to gut Texas cities’ employment non-discrimination ordinances, which extend the only fully-inclusive protections for LGBTQ Texans. Rocketman’s Taron Egerton on Kissing a Man Onscreen, His Teenage Gay Questioning, and Being Naked with Richard Madden
The Elton John biopic Rocketman hits screens on May 31 after premiering at Cannes where actor Taron Egerton is rumored to perform alongside Elton John at the film’s debut.
Egerton was profiled this week in The Hollywood Reporter where he talked about preparing for the film by reading Elton’s old diaries at the icon’s estate, and spoke about how the singer’s receding hairline and front gap tooth were recreated.
He talked as well about the gay sex scenes in the film, and playing a gay man.
Said Egerton: “For me, kissing a man onscreen is no less appealing than kissing a woman onscreen. I’m not in any way repulsed by the male form. It’s an uncomfortable thing regardless of who you’re with — it makes no difference as to your sexual preference.”
Added Egerton, of straight actors playing gay roles: “I have spoken to gay people for whom it’s not a problem, and I’ve spoken to gay people for whom it is a problem. I completely understand. But for my part, I’m an actor, and I did not get into acting to just play people like me. You have to draw the line somewhere, and I don’t want to live in a world where straight people play straight people and gay people play gay people.”
In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, Egerton said that he thought he might be gay at one point in his life: “When I was 14 or 15, I had a period of thinking I might be gay and I spoke to my mother about it. It was part of a period in my life where my mind was figuring things out. You question everything, there are hormones … It was a very real feeling to me, and I was very panicked and upset about how I would be perceived. That is not the same as going through it for real but there is some understanding of what it might be like, and I remember feeling that acutely.”
Egerton also spoke of his sex scenes with actor Richard Madden, who plays his manager John Reid in the film: “I felt Richard’s penis … on my leg. We shot a scene where we are both naked on a bed, and we are rolling around. I don’t really know how much further we could have gone. In the script, this is the scene of Elton losing his virginity and we wanted to try to do that justice, and also at that point their relationship hasn’t broken down yet.”

At the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York, Tony-nominated star of The Prom Caitlin Kinnunen performed “Unruly Heart” accompanied by Tony nominee Matthew Sklar on piano, and joined by The Youth Pride Chorus, Broadway Babies Choir, and Broadway’s Ambassadors. The moving song, “Unruly Heart,” serves as the show’s emotional LGBTQ youth anthem, and an important moment in the journey of the protagonist, Emma, played by Kinnunen.
Kinnunen was also joined onstage by Anthony Bowens and Map Pesqueira, two young and brave LGBTQ figures who shared their stories with the audience. Anthony Bowens spoke of his position as one of the few openly gay professional wrestlers and how he has inspired other LGBTQ athletes “to continue playing the sport they love no matter what.” Map Pesqueira, a college freshman who lost his ROTC scholarship because he is transgender, talked about how efforts from GLAAD and others have helped to fund his education.
The Prom is the joyous Broadway hit that New York Magazine calls “a smart, big-hearted new musical comedy” and The New York Times declares a Critic’s Pick! The story centers on Emma, a young lesbian barred from attending her high school prom with her girlfriend, and the aging Broadway stars who come to their aid. It’s a new musical comedy about big Broadway stars, a small town, and a love that unites them all. Last fall, a performance from the cast at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade culminated in the first-ever same-sex kiss in the event’s history. The Prom is also set to be adapted into a Young Adult novel that will be published this fall.
Earlier this month, Ryan Murphy worked with GLAAD, The Trevor Project, and the Hetrick-Martin Institute to host hundreds of LGBTQ youth for a special, star-studded performance of the LGBTQ-themed musical. During the event, he announced that he plans to bring The Prom to Netflix, because it vehemently spreads the message that “LGBTQ rights are human rights.” This week, The Prom received seven Tony nominations, including a nomination for Best Musical, and a nomination for performer Caitlin Kinnunen for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.
The 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York were filled with moments of celebration, reflection, and honoring of LGBTQ voices. Madonna accepted the Advocate for Change award, presented by Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen accepted the Vito Russo award, presented by Sarah Jessica Parker. Other major winners included the cast of Pose (Outstanding Drama Series), Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (Outstanding Variety or Talk Show), and CNN Tonight with Don Lemon (Outstanding TV Journalism Segment).
The New York City ceremony will air exclusively on Logo on Sunday, May 12 at 8pm ET/PT.
