Pro golfer Patrick Reed will likely be fined after dropping an anti-gay slur on the opening hole of the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai, China today.

Said Reed to himself after making three putts to sink the ball: “Nice f–kin’ three-putt you f–kin’ faggot.”

GNN reports:

Golf Channel’s Frank Nobilo immediately apologized for the remark.

The PGA Tour issued a statement on Reed’s remark, saying, “The PGA Tour Conduct Unbecoming regulations prohibit the use of obscene language on the golf course. The PGA Tour will deal with this matter internally in accordance with its regulations.” Reed will be fined.

Reed also apologized on Twitter following the round:

I’m sorry for using offensive language today in China. My passion to play well got the best of me and my word choice was unacceptable.

Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival Moves Downtown This Weekend

Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival Moves Downtown This Weekend

Palm Springs is already huge on the global gaydar screen, but in this journalist’s opinion, it’s reputation as one of the best cities for LGBTQ residents and tourists alike is about to go through the stratosphere as a dramatic change comes to the Greater Palm Springs Pride celebration.

What’s happening? Well, those familiar to the festival know that while the parade has historically gone through the heart of downtown, the two-day festival has been more than walking distance away with an admission price of up to $15. This year, however, the entire festival moves downtown and will be entirely free (although donations will be accepted and encouraged to help offset such a major change).

As revealed in a story I wrote for the current issue of GED Magazine:

“I’m really excited about how our two-day festival on Nov 8 and 9 and the kick off concert on Nov 7 will enjoy significantly greater visibility as the Pride celebration moves out from behind the walls at Sunrise Stadium to world famous Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs,” explains Ron deHarte, President of Greater Palm Springs Pride. “The stadium has been a wonderful home but a gay mecca like Palm Springs deserves a Pride celebration that’s highly visible and in the heart of the city.”

He explains, “Through the years, the Pride Parade which circled Demuth Park in the early-90s has enjoyed high levels of awareness as it traveled through the heart of the city of Palm Springs. City leaders were ahead of the curve when they included the Pride Parade when the first community-based Veterans Day and Festival of Lights Parades were created. This year, the Festival will enjoy the same visibility the Parade has enjoyed for many years in the heart of downtown Palm Springs.”

Giving credit where credit is due, deHarte elaborated, “Huge kudos to the City Council, police, fire, traffic and events departments who have really made the move downtown possible. Mayor Steve Pougnet saw our vision from the very start and he’s been a great source of encouragement. When we first started the conversation in 2011 about moving the festival downtown the Main Street Palm Springs business association was very supportive. I think they were our first cheerleaders! The Pride Festival and Parade are really significant events.”

In the months leading up to this year’s festival, deHarte was a special guest on the Nicholas Snow Live radio show on which he spoke in more detail about the historic changes coming to the festival, and also gave a detailed rundown of the recipients of its 2014 Pride Honors Awards presented annually to individuals in order to recognize the work they have put into raising awareness and furthering the causes of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and their allies.

An LGBT civil rights attorney, pioneering businesswoman and first openly transgender trial judge in the United States top the slate of activists and community leaders. Palm Springs Pride has been a tireless advocate for equality and diversity for twenty-eight years. “I’m Pride. Stonewall 45” is this year’s Pride celebration theme.

Lea DeLaria Speaks Out About Facing Down Subway Preacher: 'You Must Always Face Evil…'

Lea DeLaria Speaks Out About Facing Down Subway Preacher: 'You Must Always Face Evil…'

2_delaria

Earlier this week, a video in which Orange is the New Black actress Lea DeLaria shouted down a Bible-beating preacher on the NYC subway went viral.

DeLaria spoke to Page Six about the incident, and why she stood up and got in his face:

“I really can’t tolerate anyone who uses the name of Jesus to preach hatred. When he literally used the word ‘homo,’ I decided to get up. I have no problem with people talking out loud on the subway. I think that freedom of speech comes with responsibility. You should not, you cannot spew that kind of hatred out loud — especially in New York City, a multicultural and -religious city that we live in….You must always face evil and take it down. The reason evil thrives in the world, the reason hatred thrives in the world, the reason bullying thrives in the world is because of complacency. As long as we continue to take it, it will continue to thrive.”

Preach.

How '50 Shades Of Grey' Made BDSM Go Mainstream

How '50 Shades Of Grey' Made BDSM Go Mainstream

In a Sunday interview with The Guardian, Jamie Dornan informed the world that there will be exactly zero penis shots in “50 Shades Of Grey.” Or to use the actor’s parlance, Dornan’s “todger” won’t appear. The news struck fans with shock rivaled only by the realization that the pinot is running low: What good is a movie about sexy sex without any male nudity? That collective reaction encompasses the way E.L. James has made embracing expression of sexuality acceptable. By bringing Christian Grey into our consciousness, “50 Shades” made it okay to talk about BDSM the daylight.

There have been porn sites dedicated to BDSM since the dawn of time the Internet. But it’s not something we were ever especially comfortable with. The stigmatized perception of kink rang especially true for E.L. James’ target audience (presumably repressed women in book clubs). BDSM was wholly taboo prior to this rise of Anastasia Steele’s inner goddess. So, what happened?

Well, lets back up: Calling all “50 Shades”-reading book clubs “repressed” isn’t fair. But if we’re being real, James’ book is not for practicing sadists and masochists. The BDSM reflected in those pages is not BDSM in real life. As Roxanne Gay wrote for The Rumpus: “This analogy might help illustrate the difference between BDSM in the real world, and BDSM in the world of E.L. James—Fifty Shades of Grey : BDSM :: McDonalds : Food.” That about sums it up. Yet, on some level, this explosion of erotic content at a macro-culture level helped people who might not have otherwise had exposure to any food get a taste of Mickey D’s.

The power of “50 Shades” lies in that cheap and accessible packaging. It’s reductive, simplistic and partly wrong, but that’s what made it explode into a 100-million-copy phenomenon. It gives access to people who might have been otherwise either unaware or, perhaps worse, ashamed. As Dr. Audrey Ervin, professor of psychology at Delaware Valley College wrote on the subject, “What the book does say for sure is that there are women who want to explore sexual themes that aren’t mainstream and that books are giving those women who are curious an avenue to do that.” The key word there is “mainstream.” By breaking into the visible cultural stratosphere, “50 Shades” made it okay to sexually experiment and opened the lines of communication for doing so.

This isn’t so simple or silly as Suzy Homemaker using Swifer pads to lightly restrain her husband (that’s a joke and there’s a whole separate discussion to be had about whether we should be calling this stuff “mommy porn”). The thing to ponder here is the social constructs that surround our sexuality. The idea that these kind of activities are seen as abnormal or fetishistic until they are cast into the mainstream sheds light on how silly any of our social restrictions are in the first place. If the same people lining up for the midnight showing of “50 Shades” would have ever hesitated to participate in a discourse surrounding BDSM, maybe we need to worry a bit less about what other people think of our “todger”-related preferences.
