Elton John Discusses Controversial Relationship With Rush Limbaugh
Why does Elton John have a relationship with Rush Limbaugh?
John sat down with Darren Walker of the Ford Foundation this week to discuss a range of topics, including race and sexuality. At one point in the interview, John’s controversial relationship with the anti-gay talk show host became a point of conversation.
“I’ve been sober for 24 years now, and one of the best lessons it taught me is to listen,” John told The New York Times. “When it comes to people like Rush Limbaugh, or people who might enrage you sometimes, dialogue is the only way. You have to reach out… Whether you make an impact in one year or 30 years, it doesn’t matter. You have to put your foot in the water and start the process.”
John and Limbaugh have been friends for a number of years and the the piano great performed at the conservative media personality’s fourth wedding in 2011. John previously spoke out about this performance, saying that he hoped to open a dialogue about queer issues with Limbaugh.

British HIV Education Is Regressing Towards ’80s Fear Rhetoric
British HIV Education Is Regressing Towards ’80s Fear Rhetoric
One of the best tools to combat HIV/AIDS is proper education, and it appears the Brits have a large gap that needs closing.
Gay Star News reports that according to new research for National AIDS Trust by Ipsos MORI and published for World AIDS Day today, 28 percent of Brits think you can contract HIV from kissing, sharing a glass, spit, a public toilet seat, coughs and sneezes.
The truly odd part is that this number is on the rise, up from 18 percent in 2010.
Demographics of respondents weren’t provided, though it would be helpful to know how the misunderstandings break down by age, gender, income level, etc.
It would be nice to know, for instance, who the 9 percent of British people are who think that if you’re diagnosed with HIV, you only have three years to live.
Or the 17 percent who don’t know that HIV is passed by sex without a condom between a man and a woman. And somehow the figure is even larger who don’t know it’s passed on through sex between two men — 19 percent.
Deborah Gold, chief executive of National AIDS Trust, called the results “alarming”:
“Lack of understanding leads to stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV. This is taking us straight back to the early 80s – and this time we don’t have the excuse of not knowing better.”
While 79 percent of people said people with HIV deserve the same support as those with cancer, a surprising 23 percent said they don’t have sympathy for people who contract the disease through unprotected sex.
We’re guessing some of those people also make up the 37 percent of those who think they should be notified if one of their colleagues has HIV. Back to the ’80s indeed.

Rick Santorum Says Separation of Church and State is a Communist Idea, Not an American One: AUDIO
In a recent conference call with failed Virginia Lieutenant Governor candidate E.W. Jackson, former Pennsylvania senator and longtime theocrat Rick Santorum responded to a caller waxing poetic about the communist influences in the Democratic Party’s support for gay rights and immigration reform by adding that the whole idea of separation of church and state really has more in common with communist Russia than it does with our good old red, white, and blue.

'A Day With HIV 2014' Photo Campaign Fights Stigma Of HIV
'A Day With HIV 2014' Photo Campaign Fights Stigma Of HIV
One of the greatest acts of resistance is to live visibly and openly — even in the face of massive cultural stigma.
Earlier this year, HuffPost Gay Voices published a piece encouraging readers to submit a photo from their lives at some point during the day on Sept. 9 in order to raise awareness about what it means to live in a world with HIV. Called “A Day With HIV” and sponsored by Positively Aware and TPAN, this photo campaign invited people from all around the world to share with their public their own story of what it means to be affected by HIV.
Now, in honor of World AIDS Day, we’re sharing some of the photos that were sent in to the campaign.
“I was confirmed positive just one week ago,” Jason Daisey shares in his Day With HIV 2014 photo. “It was a scary week, but I won’t let it change my life for the worse. My center and balance point is being in the barn with my horses. I’m a professional guy, the kind that no one ever would think would get diagnosed with HIV. Now’s my time to use my uniqueness to educate other gay men about how real this really is.”

Irish Bishop Says Opposition to Marriage Equality Has Nothing to Do With 'The Gay Lifestyle' – VIDEO
Irish Bishop Says Opposition to Marriage Equality Has Nothing to Do With 'The Gay Lifestyle' – VIDEO
Irish bishop Kevin Doran has said that his opposition to same-sex marriage is “not about homosexuality or the gay lifestyle, it is about the meaning of marriage”, reports the Irish Times.
Doran, the bishop of Elphin since July and Secretary General of the Eucharistic Congress 2012, made his comments during a talk organized by anti-gay activist group the Iona Institute on “Marriage and the Common Good.” Members of the Iona Institute sued state broadcaster RTE earlier this year after drag performer Panti Bliss accused them of homophobia.
Doran, an unmarried celibate, warned the Irish government that legalizing same-sex marriage would remove “the unique relationship between marriage and procreation.”
Opening what is likely to be an unpleasant debate with a hysterical suggestion that marriage equality will lead to people marrying their pet hamsters, Doran said:
“Since [procreation] is probably the principal reason for the State to have any interest in regulating marriage … why bother regulating it at all? One might even ask, why in that case would the State restrict marriage to two people? What, in the final analysis, is the difference between a ‘sexual friendship’ (in which the State has no interest) and a marriage?”
Ignoring the realities of day-to-day life and insulting same-sex families into the bargain, he added:
“As they mature, children benefit from the love and care of both mother and father, and from their parents’ committed and exclusive love for each other. Unlike friendships, which vary in kind and degree and formality, marriage … has enough objective structure, apart from the spouses’ preferences, to be legally regulated.”

A referendum on same-sex marriage is expected in Ireland early next year. Doran’s comments are likely to be seen as an opening salvo in the Catholic church’s opposition.
