DVD: “The Maze Runner,” “The Skeleton Twins,” “First Comes Love,” & More!

twins-carThe holiday countdown continues, and we’ve got stuffing stockers in the home entertainment department, from an amazing indie drama starring SNL‘s Bill Hader as the gay brother to Kristen Wiig, The Skeleton Twins (above), to a first installment in the latest YA dystopian future franchise, The Maze Runner.

Here’s the full rundown!

The Skeleton Twins

($24.99 Blu-ray, $19.98 DVD; Lionsgate)

Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig play estranged siblings that reunite following a failed double-suicide attempt in this Sundance Film Festival award-winning dramedy. While sorting out his sibling issues, Hader’s gay wannabe actor character, Milo, decides to try and reconnect with his first love, Rich (Ty Burrell), a married-with-children teacher he had an affair with while underage. The extras reveal some of the laughs had by Wiig and Hader in a making-of featurette, gag reel, outtakes, and a collection of deleted scenes that includes a gay lip-lock between Hader and Burrell.

The Maze Runner

($39.99 Blu-ray,$29.98 DVD; 20th Century Fox)

This latest YA dystopian fantasy franchise – enough already, Hollywood! – sees a group of young men trapped together, with the only way of possible escape being through a deadly maze populated by scary monsters. Of course, a plucky new Katniss… ahem, arrival, Thomas, may be the one to lead the way out. Patricia Clarkson appears as the franchise’s token adult-actress-of-stature. Extras include a commentary, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and featurettes.

First Comes Love

($24.99 DVD; HBO)

Single and hitting her 40s, filmmaker Nina Davenport decided to have a baby with sperm from a gay friend and help from a best friend. In this acclaimed documentary, she shares the process and journey.

Arizona Sky

($14.99 DVD; Radioactive Cactus)

This week sees the release of four gay indie films from director Jay London, including this long unavailable 2008 romance about a pair of teenage lovers who reunite almost two decades after being separated to discover a connection may still exist between them.

'Cucumber' And 'Banana,' Queer Dramas, To Air On Logo TV

'Cucumber' And 'Banana,' Queer Dramas, To Air On Logo TV
Are you ready for your new favorite queer television shows?

From the writer of the iconic “Queer As Folk” and the much beloved “Dr. Who” comes “Cucumber,” “Banana” and “Tofu,” three interlinked gay dramas that are already receiving buzz for their unapologetic portrayals of queer life. “Cucumber,” “Banana” and “Tofu” will premiere across Channel 4, E4 and 4oD in the UK in 2015.

Logo TV will run “Cucumber” and “Banana” on Logo TV in early 2015 in the U.S. The network has not announced plans regarding “Tofu.”

“Whether he’s reinventing Doctor Who for a whole new generation, or creating riveting gay and lesbian characters on the original ‘Queer as Folk,’ Russell T Davies always pushes television forward,” Stephen Friedman, President of MTV and Logo TV, said in a statement sent to The Huffington Post. “’Cucumber’ and ‘Banana’ are groundbreaking for the way they show intertwined narratives from two generations’ different perspectives. Even more importantly, the shows tell hilarious, incisive and very human stories.”

“It’s an honour and delight to team up with Logo for these brand new dramas,” Davies said in a statement. “It’s 16 years since I created ‘Queer As Folk,’ which means I’ve had 16 years to build up new characters, new stories, and new insights into our lives. Across both series, we explore gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender stories, as well as love beyond labels – this is 50 shades of gay, and beyond!”
