Random rooftop parties in London

The Glory is a small pub on Kingsland Road – just next to Haggerston station in London’s inner-east.

With a management team boasting some of London’s finest alternative talent, The Glory has quickly established itself as a hub for all things queer in the UK capital.

But Jonny Woo and his crew are flexing their creative muscles beyond the physical constraints of the old pub, with the Glory Days festival taking over the space on top of the Old Street roundabout on a warm Saturday in early August.

There were drag queens, performances, singing, dancing, and drinking. Everything that The Glory does best.

REVIEW: Hanoi Cafe – Kingsland Road, London

Kingsland Road is a street that is awash with Vietnamese restaurants. Walking distance from Old Street and Liverpool Street tube stations, this is an extension of Shoreditch High Street, heading to the hipster-east of The City.

For the first-timer it can be a little difficult to see much difference between the myriad of Vietnamese restaurants concentrated in this precinct, but locals all have their favorites.

One of the good ones is Hanoi Cafe – I particularly like their Bánh mì, the filled baguettes that are one of Vietnam’s best-loved street foods. There’s a range of fillings available but it doesn’t get much better than the traditional pork.

Cecil the Lion’s Brother Jericho Illegally Killed in Zimbabwe

More heartbreaking news out of Zimbabwe as Jericho, the brother of slain lion Cecil, was gunned down illegally in Hwange National Park today.

CNN reports:

“It is with huge disgust and sadness that we have just been informed that Jericho, Cecil’s brother has been killed at 4pm today,” Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said Saturday on Facebook.

“We are absolutely heart broken,” the Task Force added.

Jericho was considered to be caring for and defending Cecil’s cubs, but the survivability of those cubs wasn’t immediately clear in the aftermath of Jericho’s death.

Some of the cubs may have been Jericho’s, said David Macdonald, director of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, who has been studying Cecil.

Earlier today, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority announced it would be further tightening hunting regulations outside wildlife parks.

NYPD officers accused of anti-gay attack

A New York City man charges officers assaulted him and used anti-gay epithets. According to the Daily News, police knocked on the door of Louis Falcone on 19 June. There was a complaint of noise from the Staten Island home he shares with his mother.

Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City.

Falcone tells the newspaper four officers showed up at the door. He explained he and his brother had a loud argument earlier.

‘As I’m talking to them through the screen door, they’re saying to come outside,’ Falcone recalls to the Daily News. ‘I said, “For what?”‘

Falcone’s dog started to bark, and when he turned to quiet him one of the officers pulled Falcone outside.

‘They threw me against the concrete in front of my house,’ he said. ‘My first reaction was to try to get up a little bit.’

During the scrum, he charges he was called a faggot.

‘While I was on the ground, I had mud and blood in my mouth,’ he said. ‘One (of the cops) said, “Don’t let it get on you, he probably has AIDS, the faggot.”‘

A New York City Police Department spokesman tells the newspaper a different story.

‘Falcone became belligerent and uncooperative. He appeared to have been injured in the fight with his brother. As the officers attempted to subdue him, he resisted and spit blood in the face of one of them,’ the spokesman said to the newspaper.

‘The officers were able to restrain him and he was transported by EMS to a local hospital for evaluation,’ the spokesman continues.

Falcone claims he was left with a broken nose, two black eyes, and cuts to his face and body.

He faces no charges. However, Eric Subin, his lawyer, insists there are plans to sue in federal court for civil rights violations.

‘They’re criminals; they belong behind bars,’ Subin said to the Daily News.

Ralph W. Vogel, executive director of the Staten  Island LGBT Community Center, is calling for an investigation.
