Meet Zackary Drucker & Rhys Ernst of “Transparent,” Two Trans Role Models Changing Media

Meet Zackary Drucker & Rhys Ernst of “Transparent,” Two Trans Role Models Changing Media

13TRANSNATION-videoSixteenByNine1050Back in March of last year, Zackary Drucker and Rhys Ernst had their photography exhibit — “Relationship” — at the Whitney Biennial in NYC. The photo series explores their individual gender transitions, what that meant for their relationship and how their love evolved and transitioned alongside them.

At the time, we noted that they were working as consultants on a new show, Jill Soloway’s Transparent.

Then season one happened to major audience and critical acclaim (season 2 comes out December 4 — we can’t wait), and these two artists and collaborators find themselves even more on the forefront of the gender conversation.

Below, YouTuber Raymond Braun interviews Zackary and Rhys about their roots and what it means to be trans role models in today’s media:

Gays Are Trying to Ruin the Boy Scouts for U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, But He Won’t Leave

Gays Are Trying to Ruin the Boy Scouts for U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, But He Won’t Leave

Texas Republican Congressman Pete Sessions, an Eagle Scout, says he disagrees with the Boy Scouts of America’s recent decision to lift its ban on gay adult leaders, but plans to remain part of the organization anyway.

bsaPresumably referring to LGBT advocates, Sessions says the policy change was the result of “outside factors trying to literally ruin the Boy Scouts of America.” He also blamed the decision on nondiscrimination laws designed to allow people to file lawsuits against the Scouts and “take us to our knees.”

Sessions, who represents a Dallas-area district, told NBCDFW.com:

“Let’s put it this way: I disagree with it, but I’m sticking with Scouting. … Scouting is there for the young man and the boy, and there are outside factors trying to literally ruin the Boy Scouts of America over something they don’t understand. We are an organization that is about taking young boys and getting them prepared for their future. … I disagree with it. I would not have done it, and I think if we keep dwelling on this inside the organization, we do ourselves harm. We now need to move forward. It was done because of a series of laws across the United States that were designed to sue the Boy Scouts of America and take us to our knees. I think we’ve better alive even if I disagree with exactly what that policy is.”

As Think Progress notes, the Scouts’ decision to lift the ban on gay adult leaders had little, if anything, to do with nondiscrimination laws. Rather, the policy change was the result of pressure from corporate donors and leaders such as President Barack Obama, as well as rapidly shifting public opinion on LGBT equality.

Nevertheless, on the shock meter, Sessions’ statements about the Boy Scouts seemingly pale in comparison to the one he made last week about gun violence, which he blamed on “diversity in America.”

Watch Sessions’ remarks about the Boy Scouts beginning at about the 5:28 mark in the video below.

Women Are Prizes In Video Games — And That Should Bother You

Women Are Prizes In Video Games — And That Should Bother You

Swelling breasts, revealing costumes, wet turtle smooches: These are the rewards you may be used to seeing in your favorite video games.

A new entry in Anita Sarkeesian’s “Feminist Frequency” series released Monday explores the many ways women in video games have been treated like a gold star stuck onto a filled-out worksheet.

None of it will come as a surprise to anyone who’s remotely familiar with video games. For decades, players have been rewarded with flesh, sex and innuendo for progress in games spanning the original “Metroid” to the most recent “Grand Theft Auto.”

The video is worth watching in large part because seeing so many examples of women-as-reward in rapid succession is dizzying — taken in isolation, especially as one component of games that take more than 20 hours to complete, these moments might be easy to ignore or diminish. But they are part of a massive trend, one that diminishes an entire half of the human race to little more than a husky voice emanating from heaving cleavage.

It practically goes without saying why this is a problem. Video games are supposed to be art — or entertainment, at least — for everyone, but some of the most popular, multimillion-dollar franchises on the planet communicate, full stop, that women are worth less than men. They are prizes to be claimed through feats of gameplay: Mario beats Bowser and Princess Peach kisses him. They’re treated like power-ups: Watch a prostitute perform oral sex on your character in “Grand Theft Auto V” and your character’s attributes improve.

It all reinforces the idea that men are supposed to — even entitled to — claim women after overcoming some challenge. Perhaps as a tangential concern, it also communicates a heteronormative status quo — sex and relationships in video games are too often exclusively for a man and a women. They’re quite frequently also just for white people.

To clarify, here’s what this video is not saying: That sexuality in video games is inherently a problem, that women gamers can’t enjoy a sexy portrayal of a female character, that every popular video game is masculine dreck and that games with problematic portrayals are automatically “bad.”

Responses to the video on KotakuInAction, the main GamerGate community on Reddit, have actually been pretty reasonable. While Sarkeesian has been targeted by GamerGate proponents over her views before– with death threats and harassment — the few people weighing in on Reddit Monday morning found little to complain about:

Of course, some were worried about how the media would portray the video. They wonder, does it makes sense for gaming to be called out for negative representations of women when, you know, movies and books and stuff can be awful, too?

The answer is “yes.” Video games are still a relatively nascent art form — one that’s recently become the subject of serious critical reflection. You may not be a gamer yourself, but you should care about the media that our young people are raised on and that our adult professionals spend so much time with. If we can challenge pop culture to be better, why wouldn’t we?

Australian Footballers Show LGBT Support Before Getting Muddied Up

One of Australia’s oldest football teams, the University Blacks, decided to forego tradition and change up their uniforms to show support for LGBT people.

As you can see, they opted for a classic rainbow look. The move was part of a a broader “gay, that’s ok” campaign in which the team also painted its 50-meter line with rainbows.

Lachlan

The initiative was inspired by former player Lachlan Beaton, who lived in the closet for decades before coming out.

Other teams are already planning similar actions of support, but they’re going to have to get a bit more creative now that the “let’s put rainbows on our jumpers” idea has been taken.

We're Living For This Couple's Unicorn Jet Ski Wedding Entrance

We're Living For This Couple's Unicorn Jet Ski Wedding Entrance

We’ve seen some epic proposals and imaginative receptions over the past year, but as far as wedding entrances go, this one is truly legendary.

As they began planning their lakeside ceremony, Michael Buchanan and Jason Gilbert said that friends and family told them that their “big gay wedding” just wouldn’t be complete without unicorn jet skis.

So, it was decided that the couple would arrive for their Aug. 23 nuptials, held at their pal Kevin Beebee‘s home on Michigan’s Lake Allegan, on — you guessed it — unicorn jet skis. And they did it in effortless style, with video footage of the entrance quickly garnering headlines on a number of media outlets, including NewNowNextTime and BuzzFeed

A Broadway actor who is currently touring with the smash musical, “The Book of Mormon,” Buchanan, 38, didn’t expect anything less than creative when he married Gilbert, 43, who had popped the question on “a dried-up waterfall precipice in Maui” roughly a year after same-sex marriage became legal in New York state in 2011. (Don’t miss their proposal video below)

The New York-based pair is grateful for all of the media attention that the unicorn jet ski entrance has drawn, even though they are quick to stress that the mythical creatures weren’t a central part of their wedding theme. Buchanan, who originally hails from Washington state, said he wouldn’t change a thing about the day, but advises couples who are planning to tie the knot to “really drink in the community of people who got you to this moment and the work it takes to celebrate and continue our responsibility to bring LGBTQ awareness to everyone.”

“What was so exciting about our wedding was that it wasn’t a ‘gay wedding,'” he said. “Thanks to the work of so many people and so much awareness we just had a ‘wedding!'”

Still, you can’t fault those unicorns for stealing the show.

“When someone suggests riding in on unicorn jet skis, you say yes,” Gilbert, a South Carolina native who works as an analyst for LexisNexis, quipped. “Or, rather, yaaaaas!”

Anti-LGBT Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis Unknowingly Issued a Marriage License to a Trans Man: VIDEO

Anti-LGBT Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis Unknowingly Issued a Marriage License to a Trans Man: VIDEO

camryn

In the multitude of court filings during her anti-gay crusade, Rowan County clerk Kim Davis liked to repeatedly bring up the “searing act of validation” that would “forever echo in her conscience” should she have to bear witness to any marriage that isn’t a 100% Bible-based man-women heterosexual union.

Well let the echoing begin because it turns out she inadvertently signed off on a marriage license to a transgender man and pansexual woman back in February.

The Courier-Journal reports:

kim davisCamryn Colen, who is transgender, and his wife Alexis, who identifies as pan sexual, said Davis’ office provided the license on Feb. 26 without asking to see Camryn’s birth certificate, which still identifies him as female. The couple married that night.

“She saw just a straight couple in love, and she should see everybody like that,” Camryn said. “She shouldn’t just see straight couples like that.”

In an interview with The Independent Camryn said he and his wife saw Davis there but didn’t exchange any words with her:

“I saw Kim Davis, but I didn’t talk to her. We went in there just as any other straight couple would,” said Camryn Colen, 30. “That night we had an official do a tiny, little testimony.”

In related news, people have begun showing up at the Rowan County Courthouse this morning to voice their support for (or frustration with) Davis:

The stay on a federal judge’s order for Davis to issue marriage license to same-sex couples expires today. Davis has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court for an extension on the stay so that she can appeal the ruling further.

The Rowan County Attorney’s Office meanwhile has filed a charge of official misconduct against clerk Kim Davis for her repeated refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples despite the federal order.

Rugby Union star Sam Stanley ‘overwhelmed’ by support since coming out

Rugby Union star Sam Stanley ‘overwhelmed’ by support since coming out

Rugby union star Sam Stanley has spoke of the ‘overwhelming’ support he has received since coming out.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the rugby sevens player revealed that he initially came out to his teammates a few months back by sending a message over the social networking app WhatsApp.

He said: ‘I’ve wanted to do it for a while… I felt too stressed to do it one-by-one so I just took that step and broadcast that message on WhatsApp to people I wanted to know.

‘The boys took it very well. I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction, really.

‘I expected a huge negative, as any gay man will tell you. It was completely different to that. I guess I’m grateful for how the boys reacted and took it.’

Stanley has also spoke about how he felt it might be difficult to be a young gay player, despite following in the footsteps of former Welsh captain Gareth Thomas who came out in 2009.

He said: ‘As much as that inspired me I knew what he’d achieved in the game. I didn’t feel that I could be a youngster and come up through the ranks and achieve what I wanted to achieve if I’d come out at an early stage in my career… but it’s a completely different story.’

Stanley has also spoke about contemplating suicide in the past, and that he hopes he can inspire other LGBTI people.

He said: ‘I remember standing over a bridge and just contemplating whether or not to jump, but now looking back you don’t see anything else to this. You get so down about it you think if you came out you’d be outcasted anyway and hated for it, so why not let that whole feeing of loneliness and anger and hurt just disappear just like that, in the blink of an eye.

‘Looking back, it’s a ridiculous decision but I know at the same time there are people who do take that leap, and if that’s something I can stop and help people avoid, that’s a great feeling for me.’

Stanley has received a lot of support since coming out.

Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton said on Twitter: ‘Well done to @Stanley_13. Now it’s done, you can relax and continue as normal. No more to be said x’

Rugby League player Keegan Hirst, who came out in early August, tweeted: ‘Well done to @Stanley_13 hope all’s well! I’m sure you’ll have all the support you need from your team mates and everybody else.’

Irish television star Graham Norton added: ‘Congratulations! One day none of this will matter but until then I commend your courage and honesty. Live proud!’
