BREAKING: HRC Welcomes News that UNC Won’t Enforce Vile HB2 Law

HRC Communications Director Jay Brown issued the following response after media reports that the University of North Carolina will not enforce the deeply discriminatory HB2:

“While it’s welcome news that UNC won’t be enforcing North Carolina’s vile HB2, the law remains a threat to students, faculty and alumni — not to mention the rest of the state — as long as it is on the books,” said HRC Communications Director Jay Brown. “Students have a right to learn without fear of discrimination, on or off campus, and university leaders have an obligation to protect them. We hope that university system officials go beyond declining to enforce the law, and join with the majority of fair-minded North Carolinians and the more than 200 business leaders calling for the full repeal of HB2.”

CA legislature OKs bill that will allow organ transplants between HIV positive individuals: “California law previously made it a crime — punishable by up to six years in prison — for a person with HIV or AIDS to donate blood or organs under any circumstance, even if it was to help a person already infected with the virus. SB1408, which unanimously passed the Legislature Friday and was signed into law by Brown shortly after, would delete that provision and allow transplants from HIV-positive donors to HIV-positive recipients and ensure that the state Medical Board cannot penalize doctors for conducting such procedures.”
