When his mom asked what a “bussy” was, professional cake maker Jon Manganello couldn’t bring himself to tell her the truth. So he made up a convincingly enough lie. But he wasn’t expecting what happened next.

“I told my mom ‘bussy’ meant boy,” Manganello recently tweeted. “She just sent photos of me and my brothers from our trip to Paris.”

One person begged Manganello not to tell his mom the truth.

Your mom is so sweet & innocent, and you can never tell her the truth.

— I.M. Noone ‍‍⚕ (@ianmnoone) May 13, 2020

But Manganello simply couldn’t have his mom casually using the word “bussy” whenever she was talking about her three grown sons. So he told her what it really means:

I had to say something pic.twitter.com/wVyHwhUGWq

— jon manganello (@jonnymangs) May 13, 2020

Turns out the joke was on him! Manganello’s mom already knew  and was just pretending she didn’t to see how he’d respond:

I’m on the damn floor pic.twitter.com/yvREm5nMWM

Well played, Mom.

AHMAUD ARBERY. Video surfaces of Glynn County PD attempting to tase him in 2017. “The video comes to light as law enforcement in the area faces scrutiny after Arbery was shot dead by two white men while out for a run in February. Police did not initially arrest Gregory and Travis McMichael, who chased down and killed the unarmed Arbery, and a prosecutor assigned to the case wrote a lengthy memo explaining why the killing was legally justified. In a joint statement to the Guardian, lawyers working for the Arbery family described the video as a clear depiction of ‘a situation where Ahmaud was harassed by Glynn county police officers’.”

Congrats! GLAAD Media Institute alum Tony Lin wins Webby Award for “Because China” series on Quartz

Congrats! GLAAD Media Institute alum Tony Lin wins Webby Award for “Because China” series on Quartz

The Quartz video series “Because China” is the People’s Voice Winner in the News & Politics (Video Series & Channels) category of the 2020 Web Awards.

Tony Lin, the project’s video journalist and an alumnus of GLAAD Media Institute’s first ever session, shared with GLAAD the importance of this recognition. “In Webby’s history of over two decades, Because China is the very first winner in this category that focuses on China and East Asia. The recognition came during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which makes the award even more special to me.”

This award comes at time when animosity has heightened towards people of Asian and particularly Chinese descent as people unfairly connect these communities to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lin added, “Through nuanced storytelling and extensive reporting, the series aims to build understanding and fight biases. The recognition is all the more important at a time when anti-Chinese and anti-Asian sentiments have become increasingly rampant. And we’re so grateful to the Webby voters and Because China audience who made us feel seen, heard, and represented.”

The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. Established in 1996, it is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS)—a 2000+ member judging body.
