Daily Dose: A hearty helping of ‘Love! Valour! Compassion!’

Welcome to Queerty’s latest entry in our Queerantined: Daily Dose series. Every day as long as the COVID-19 pandemic has us under quarantine, we’ll release a suggested bit of gloriously queer entertainment designed to keep you from getting stir crazy in the house. Each weekend, we will also suggest a bingable title to keep you extra busy.

The Salute: Love! Valor! Compassion!

In honor of the passing of legendary queer writer Terrence McNally, we can’t think of a better time to check out the movie version of one of his magnum opuses (he had a few), Love! Valor! Compassion! The story centers on eight gay men spending several holidays together in the early 1990s at the height of the AIDS crisis. Each confronts harsh realities of LGBTQ life, including HIV, aging, fulfilling or rejecting stereotypes, and of course, love. The film retains most of the Broadway production’s original cast, including Justin Kirk, John Glover (in a dual role as twins) and John Benjamin Hickey. The film’s biggest shortcoming might be the replacement of Nathan Lane–who gave one of his best performances in the stage incarnation (and if you don’t believe us YouTube it)–with Jason Alexander. Alexander is delightful in the part, though the world always needs more Nathan Lane. Love! Valor! Compassion! represents the anti-The Boys in the Band; in other words, the characters don’t teem with internalized homophobia. That, along with McNally’s rich dialogue give the material both gravitas and sensitivity. What better way to help pass the time in lockdown, and honor a fallen queer hero to boot.

Available on DVD from Amazon.

Inside with nothing to do? Brush up on your #GLAADInstitute skills

GLAAD Media Institute

Staying home provides a great opportunity to grow your skills, or refresh skills you haven’t used in a while. Members of the #GLAADInstitute team have got you covered. Take a look at some videos to get you and your media advocacy back on track:

How To Reach Your Target Audience

Everyone belongs to multiple communities in their life—from their hometown, to the jobs they’ve had, to their religion, and to their political ideology—and have power to understand how to communicate within their own communities to accelerate acceptance. Watch this video for some helpful tips on how to identify your audience and best connect to your core message of acceptance.

Movable Middle

When doing advocacy work, it can be tempting to overwork yourself trying to change the minds of resistors, who are actively opposed to your work, or to focus only on allies, who are already aligned with and supportive of your work. While this work is important, focusing on the Movable Middle, who want to be accepting but aren’t sure how, is one of the best ways to have your message of acceptance be heard and affect positive change.

Storytelling

Everyone has a lifetime of incredible stories, including you. Sharing your stories allows you to have an immediate emotional connection with your audience, and that is a great step towards accelerating acceptance. Take a look at this video for some ideas on how to tell your stories.

Interviewing

Interviews are a common format to tell your stories and share some facts about your advocacy. Even while staying home, you never know when an opportunity to be interviewed could arise. This video presents some best practices for interviews (remember to dress up, even from home!) and tactics to keep yourself on track.

For Spanish speakers, there is also a Spanish language version of this video:

Additionally, there is a video for best LGBTQ Terminology to use and define in Spanish:

The Vito Russo Test

Are you watching and streaming more TV and movies while you’re at home, and want to make sure that you’re watching the most inclusive content possible? The Vito Russo Test is a great way to evaluate the quality of LGBTQ representation—it’s actually how GLAAD assembles our Studio Responsibility Index and Where We Are On TV reports.

The GLAAD Media Institute will be offering virtual courses and workshops to activists and advocates around the country, and world, in the weeks to come. Click here to learn more about how to join a course or workshop and use your voice as a GLAAD Media Institute alum.

Alex Davies

Brian Healless, the 18-year-old British man convicted of murdering fellow 18-year-old Alex Davies, a gay man, will spend the next 24 years in prison for his crime.

Judge Mark Brown labeled Healless a “cold-blooded killer,” and rejected arguments by Healless’ attorneys that he should receive a reduced sentence. Healless’ lawyers had argued that the killer suffers from schizophrenia and therefore deserved a reduced sentence.

“You were messaging him on Grindr and Instagram for the purpose of meeting him at a remote location,” Brown told Healless in the sentencing. “You were undoubtedly setting him up to kill and you are a manipulative, calculating and devious person.” Brown also called Davies a “kind-hearted, gentle and hard-working young man who would never have harmed anyone.” He then added: “He had just been promoted at work and will never have the chance to fulfill his potential in life.”

Related: A murderer in Nigeria says he can’t be gay because he’s a plumber. Really.

Healless met Davies last April on Grindr, advising Davies that he was not out and preferred a discreet hookup in a remote location. Upon meeting, Healless attacked Davies, punching and kicking him in the face as well as stabbing him 128 times. The stabbings and beatings didn’t actually kill Davies; rather, he asphyxiated as Healless dragged him face down through mud. Police found his body two days later.

A search of Healless’ home revealed that he had targeted numerous men on Grindr with a similar pretense. Data on his computer also uncovered that he had researched how to wipe the memory of a cell phone–the same model as Davies’–and vulnerabilities in the skull. In his sentencing, Judge Brown noted these facts, and accused Healless of targeting gay men as a potential serial killer.

Of the 15 patients who didn’t get hydroxychloroquine, 14 tested negative for the virus.”
