HRC Foundation’s 2020 Time to THRIVE Conference Comes to a Close
On Sunday, HRC Foundation’s seventh annual Time to THRIVE Conference held in support of LGBTQ youth came to a close after a day of workshops, award honorees, speakers and a musical performance.
HRC presented Upstander Awards to Camika Shelby and Nicole Maines, and Youth Ambassador Nicole Talbot gave a beautiful performance of the song “You Say” to wrap the weekend.
The annual event is held in partnership with the American Counseling Association and the National Education Association, with AT&T, BBVA Compass and Toyota as presenting sponsors. In its seventh year, the HRC Foundation’s premier national event addresses safety, inclusion and well-being for LGBTQ youth, and brings together youth-serving professionals to discuss best practices for working with and caring for LGBTQ youth and their families in schools, community centers, health care settings and beyond.
Following the final morning of breakout workshops, HRC Foundation Board Chair Jodie Patternson kicked off the closing plenary. Patterson is a founding member of HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council and the mother of a trans child.

Camika Shebly became an advocate and activist after her 15-year-old son Nigel Shelby, who struggled with depression and had also faced homophobic bullying for being gay, died by suicide. She currently serves as a National Black Justice Coalition Black Youth Advocate and Ambassador.
Heartbreaking to hear from Judy and Dennis Shepard and Camika Shelby. Grateful for their efforts to protect LGBTQ youth! From Camika’s acceptance speech: “For Nigel & too many others school was unwelcoming & hostile.” 1/ #TimeToTHRIVE pic.twitter.com/ZLOH2gg3dC

#TimeToTHRIVE has come to a close. It was a very emotional weekend. Hearing stories of hardship & perseverance, rejection & loss is crucial to creating a society that is accepting. Having 1 accepting adult can reduce the risk of a suicide attempt by 40% for #LGBTQ youth

When turning 30 means you’re into guys *and* their dads
For one Reddit user, entering his 30s coincided with finding himself attracted to two generations of dudes.
“Turning 30 means still being attracted to 23-year-olds, but you also wouldn’t say no to their dad,” the Redditor recently observed. “Something must have happened in the last year where 40-something dads have become increasingly attractive to me.”
Related: Man finally meets girlfriend’s parents, realizes he’s totally had sex with Dad. Now what?
Other users, however, begged to differ. “Me when I was 19,” one commenter wrote. Said another, “Oh honey, I was always into their dad.”
A third commenter wrote, “I’ve always been into the 40-something dads, though. Good maturity, easy to converse with, and usually doesn’t want the drama.”
Another user, meanwhile, prefers his men not to be literal daddies: “While I definitely could have gone for 40-somethings at 30, if men are actual dads, that’s actually a turnoff for me, especially if the kids are still living with them, or worse, they’re still married (to a woman).”
Related: He called me “daddy” and I have some concerns…
One guy, meanwhile, is still reckoning with his placement in the daddy demographic. “Being called ‘daddy’ for the first time at 34 by a twenty-something was a come-to-Jesus moment for me, especially since I was looking at the older fella in plaid nursing that drink by the bar.”
Buttigieg Responds to Rush Limbaugh Attacks: I’m Not Going to Be Lectured by Anybody Who Supports Trump as the Moral Leader of the U.S.’ — WATCH
On both FOX News Sunday and CNN’s State of the Union, Pete Buttigieg was asked about remarks made this week by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka.
This week Limbaugh asked viewers if they could see “Mr. Man” Donald Trump “having fun” with Buttigieg kissing his husband on stage, and theorized that Democrats are wary of it too. Limbaugh also asked viewers how they would explain Buttigieg kissing his husband to their children.

Said Buttigieg to Chris Wallace: “I’m in a faithful, loving, committed marriage. I’m proud of my marriage. I’m proud of my husband. I’m not going to be lectured on family values from the likes of Rush Limbaugh or anybody who supports Donald J. Trump as the moral as well as political leader of the United States. America has moved on and we should have politics of belonging that welcomes everybody. That’s what the American people are for. I’m saddened for what the GOP has become if they embrace that kind of homophobic rhetoric.”

Buttigieg made similar remarks to CNN’s Dana Bash: “I love my husband, I am faithful to my husband. On stage, we usually just go for a hug, but I love him very much. And I am not going to take lectures on family values from the likes of Rush Limbaugh.”
