He’s fine with his son’s open marriage, but his daughter’s husband thinks it’s wrong. Now what?

He’s fine with his son’s open marriage, but his daughter’s husband thinks it’s wrong. Now what?

A Dad in Toronto is having difficultly navigating the family politics surrounding his son’s open marriage, so he’s turning to advice columnist Dear Ellie for help.

“Our adult son’s in a long-standing gay and open marriage, with a young son,” Dad writes. “They have a third mutual partner who doesn’t live with them but spends a lot of time with them.”

He continues, “He’s very good with their child and we find him very likable. His own family isn’t supportive of his choices.”

So Dad’s cool with the thruple. Mom is too. But there’s one member of the family who isn’t.

“Our daughter’s husband is uncomfortable with this person and the arrangement,” he explains.

Evidently, the brother-in-law/son-in-law has “strong negative feelings” about the whole situation. So in an act of protest, he’s stopped attending any family functions where the thruple is also in attendance.

“He’s been very accepting of my son and partner in the past. He feels that vows are important [and] that the ‘open’ relationship will be harmful to their son and confusing to his young daughter.”

The whole thing has left Dad with lots of questions: “Is this a healthy relationship?” “Is this threesome situation healthy for my grandson?” and “Should we alternate who comes to Christmas in the future?”

In her response, Ellie writes that open relationships, especially among same-sex couples, aren’t a new thing.

“The term ‘open marriage’ was introduced in the late 1970s, and misread by some enthusiasts to simply mean ‘open’ to adulterous group sex,” she explains. “Today, by contrast, what your son and his partner have embraced as ‘open’ is the presence of a third partner in their life and in raising their child.”

Is this healthy?

Sure! Ellie says. “So long as it’s maintained” and the child’s best interests are always put first.

“Plenty of so-called conventional families aren’t healthy when there’s neglect, coldness, abuse, etc.” she writes. “Meanwhile, some ‘different’ family structures work just fine.”

“With your son-in-law, keep contact ongoing. He and your daughter are equal members of your family needing their own attention. A group gathering isn’t always necessary. … Finding reasonable solutions is what keeps a family intact.”

She concludes, “Generally, I find your family is admirably trying to honor, accept or at least understand each other’s differences.”

Gavin Newsom considers pardoning queer Civil Rights icon Bayard Rustin

Gavin Newsom considers pardoning queer Civil Rights icon Bayard Rustin

In more uplifting news…

The California LGBTQ and Black Caucuses of the state legislature have just sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom requesting a posthumous pardon for Civil Rights leader Bayard Rustin.

Rustin towers over American history as one of the most important leaders of the Civil Rights movement, having worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to help plan King’s March on Washington and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Scandal forced Rustin to part company with King in 1963, as King feared that Rustin’s sexuality could harm the fledgling movement. Rustin had been arrested for sex with a man in a parked car in 1953.

That arrest, and the subsequent tarnish it left on Rustin’s career prompted the LGBTQ and Black Caucuses to take action.

Gay state Senator Scott Wiener and African American Assemblywoman Shirley Weber penned the letter in hopes of expunging Rutin’s record. “Mr. Rustin lived during a period of time in our nation’s history where his identity was under constant assault,” the pair write. “Racial tensions were at a heightened state, segregation was in full effect, and Jim Crow laws were being enforced in various states throughout the country. This was also a time when homosexuality was criminalized, and LGBTQ people across the country were under a constant threat of violence and targeting.”

“Mr. Rustin’s conviction and registered sex offender status haunted him for the rest of his life,” the letter states, “and it continues to tarnish his name, despite his death 33 years ago. Indeed, California’s treatment of Mr. Rustin tarnishes our entire state.”

Should Newsom take action, he will not be the first government official to embrace Rustin’s memory. President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Honor in 2013 for his contribution to American equality.

11 Countries Ban AppleTV+ ‘Little America’ Episode Dealing with Gay Syrian Refugee

A gay-themed episode from the critically-acclaimed AppleTV+ series Little America has been banned in 10 Middle Eastern countries and Russia, according to its writer.

The episode, written by Amrou Al-Kadhi and Stephen Dunn and called “The Son”, is the show’s finale episode and deals with a gay Syrian refugee trying to gain asylum in the United States so he can live openly. Haaz Sleiman and Adam Ali star in the episode. The episode is based, as are all of them but one, on the first person story of Shadi Ismail published in Epic Magazine.

The filmmakers had already experienced difficulties in getting the show filmed in the U.S.. Due to Trump’s travel ban, several of the queer

Wrote Al-Kadhi on social media: “This is the harsh reality of making queer Arab work. The Trump travel ban meant we had to move this shoot out of America. And now our #LittleAmerica episode has been banned in 11 countries. We’re so sorry about this – please know we’re working hard to find a way to get it to you.”

The Washington Post notes: “‘The Son,’ one of eight episodes in the dramatic anthology, follows Ismail as he flees Syria, hides in Jordan and perseveres until he eventually makes his way to the American Northwest. Ismail, 32, said he was moved to tears by actor Haaz Sleiman’s portrayal. ‘All my life I was hoping to see a gay Arabic man on TV,’ he says. ‘In our culture, we’re told we should be killed because nobody wants us. And then it turns out my story will be the one on TV.’”

Al-Kadhi expressed frustration about the situation: “We were so excited to be given the platform to tell this story – it’s based on a true one – because not only is there very limited representation of queer Arabs, immigrants in particular have been dehumanised into statistics and horror stories by the media. … There are countless other Rafiq’s right now whose lives are threatened because of the current global politics, and what we wanted to do was give them a voice.”
