Police won’t say why this young gay man died in their custody

A young gay man being held for over a month at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia has died after suffering from an unspecified “chronic illness.”

27-year-old Contravious “Trey” Burson was rushed from the jail to Grady Memorial Hospital after becoming ill on December 12, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. He died a few hours later.

Police have been staying mum about the whole thing, refusing to say what the “chronic illness” was or why they waited until he was near death before getting him proper medical care.

When pressed for more information, Tracy Flanagan, the sheriff’s office spokeswoman, specifically said, “No additional details can be released at this time.”

Dr. Karen Sullivan, Fulton’s deputy chief medical examiner, tells Project Q that an autopsy on Burson was performed but the results have not yet been released.

“The cause and manner of death are pending investigation,” she says.

Burson was arrested last month after allegedly threatening a security guard at a movie theater.

He was booked into Fulton County Jail on November 2 and charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, and carrying a weapon without a valid license.

Since news of his death broke, Burson’s friends have taken to Facebook to share fond memories of him, remembering his unique sense of humor and dancing skills, as well as his “loving” and “caring” energy.

“He was the person that would light up the room,” Burson’s friend Tolulope Lulu tells Project Q. “He was the person who would give you a listening ear even though he was stressed or going through personal things.”

A funeral will be held this Saturday.

Former USPS worker says he was called “fruitcake” and “sick f*ggot” before being fired

Former USPS worker says he was called “fruitcake” and “sick f*ggot” before being fired

A former letter carrier from Lehigh County, Pennsylvania has just filed a discrimination lawsuit against the United States Postal Service after he says he was harassed incessantly and eventually fired for being gay.

The man’s name has been redacted from the federal lawsuit to mitigate any risks of stigma or retribution. He is being referred to as simply John Doe.

According to the lawsuit, Doe, who is HIV-positive, worked for 12 years as a letter carrier. He was based out of the Postal Road branch of the postal service in Hanover Township, Lehigh County. That is until this past August, when he was let go.

Doe claims that, thought his tenure with USPS, his coworkers repeatedly used antigay slurs against him, including calling him a “sick f*ggot” and “Glinda,” the female witch from The Wizard of Oz, and mocked him for wearing his shorts “too tight.”

But it wasn’t just his coworkers. His manager did it too, allegedly telling him one day, “I f*cking swear to God I’m gonna get his ass fired.”

That day came on August 19, 2019, when Doe was told he was out of a job after being falsely accused of kicking a coworker.

The coworker’s name was Lisa Williams. In his lawsuit, Doe says Williams lied about the incident when she contacted police almost a week after it supposedly happened. Police charged him with harassment, but the charge was later dropped.

Managers dragged things out further by waiting another 40 days before conducting their mandatory pre-disciplinary interview with Doe, then waited another 53 days before giving him his “notice of removal.”

The day Doe was fired, Williams allegedly told her coworkers, “I’m so glad they finally got rid of that fruitcake,” according to another colleague who overheard her, the lawsuit states.

“Defendants acceded to Ms. Williams’ discriminatory bias and hate by wrongfully terminating Doe,” the lawsuit says.

As a result of being fired, Doe says he became depressed and now he doesn’t know how he’s going to pay for his healthcare costs, including his lifesaving HIV medications.

He is asking for his job back and to be paid for the time since he was terminated. He also wants compensation for pain and suffering and embarrassment.

USPS spokeswoman Karen Mazurkiewicz said she couldn’t comment on pending litigation but maintained that the U.S. Postal Service is “committed to providing a work environment free of harassment or other inappropriate conduct based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, mental or physical disability.”

Adam Schiff responded to remarks made by Donald Trump to reporters during a meeting with the leader of Guatemala.

Said Trump, making the false claim that Schiff somehow misrepresented his July 25 call with Ukraine: “When you have a guy like Shifty Schiff go out and make up a statement that I made, he said, this is what he said but I never said it. He totally made it up. In Guatemala they handle things much tougher than that.”

Said Schiff on Wednesday: “He’s not going to intimidate me. I think it was quite deliberately designed to be a threat and this is the president’s modus operandi. I’m not the first person he’s made a veiled threat about, I won’t be the last. But this is precisely the kind of conduct Americans should not accept in the Oval Office.”

Added Schiff: “This is a president, after all, who has said of people who blow the whistle on him that they’re traitors and spies and should be treated as traitors and spies used to be treated. We used to execute traitors and spies. So this is not a president above threatening anyone who gets in his way, anyone who stands up to him.”

HRC SUPPORTS THE IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: “The United States of America is a nation of laws, built upon the Constitutional promise that no one is beyond accountability — especially those elected to serve the American public. Donald Trump has proven time and again that he believes he is above the law and not beholden to the United States Constitution,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid). “Trump’s ongoing efforts to undermine the 2020 election by soliciting foreign interference is unacceptable, deeply dangerous and an affront to the fundamental democratic principle of free and fair elections. Because of these troubling facts, the Human Rights Campaign supports the impeachment of Donald Trump. The impeachment process is a constitutionally guaranteed process for preserving accountability and the integrity of our democracy. Now, Congress must ensure a conclusion consistent with law.” More from HRC.
