Maryland Company Claims to Have Cure for HIV/AIDS Through Gene Therapy, Expects Clinical Trial in January: WATCH

American Gene Technologies in Rockville, Maryland says it has submitted an application to the FDA for a gene therapy it claims eliminates HIV.

CBS Baltimore reports: “The company said the therapy, AGT103-T, is a genetically-modified product made from a person’s own cells that focuses on repairing damage to the immune system caused by HIV. The company expects to start a phase one clinical trial in humans in January.”

Said Chief Science Officer C. David Pauza, PhD: “Our aim is to treat HIV disease with an innovative cell and gene therapy that reconstitutes immunity to HIV and will control virus growth in the absence of antiretroviral drugs. Development of this complex product (AGT103-T) required our deep knowledge of both HIV disease and lentivirus vector technology; it is the first cell and gene immunotherapy addressing the most critical feature of HIV infection, which is the chronic absence of virus-specific CD4 T cells.”

Said Jeff Galvin, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AGT: “We are excited to have reached this milestone of submitting our first IND application to the FDA for an HIV gene/cell therapy. This event brings us closer to reaching our mission to transform lives with genetic medicines. Based on our successful commercial-scale product manufacturing runs and features of the product observed in our laboratories, this therapy has a high potential to be effective. I feel confident that AGT103-T will make an important difference in the lives of HIV infected persons. HIV is the first drug candidate to result from AGT’s proprietary platform and model for creating gene and cell therapeutics more efficiently, predictably and reliably for clinical development.”

HRC and UConn Launch Survey to Examine Health Care Experiences of Black and Latinx Young Adults

HRC and UConn Launch Survey to Examine Health Care Experiences of Black and Latinx Young Adults

Post submitted by HRC Foundation Research Manager Charlie H. Whittington, M.P.P.

HRC Foundation and researchers at the University of Connecticut are conducting a study to better understand the health care experiences of Black and Latinx young adults. This survey will ask respondents about their health care experiences, including their knowledge and experiences with PrEP. The survey will also ask participants questions about their background and identity, such as their education, relationships and age, and how these have shaped their experiences in the world. All responses are anonymous.

HRC Foundation is committed to addressing gaps in health care, including the lack of access to life-saving medication that contributes to HIV and health inequities in Black and Latinx communities. According to HRC Foundation’s analysis of CDC data, nearly one in four Latinx and Black LGBTQ high school youth say they have not received education about HIV prevention in their schools. This is unacceptable.

Our goal with this project is to identify ways to better connect community members with tools such as PrEP, and with inclusive, competent providers. The results of this survey will be shared with medical providers, policymakers and advocates in an effort to expand access to HIV prevention and care services. We want to help everyone get the care they want, need and deserve.

The survey questions were developed collaboratively with Black and Latinx community members and health care providers, as well as other survey experts. When undertaking surveys, HRC’s goal is to always make sure that the questions are relevant, inclusive and respectful, while being consistent with previous scientific studies to the extent possible.

Pete Buttigieg Praises Obama After Reporter’s Egregious Viral Misquote

Pete Buttigieg Praises Obama After Reporter’s Egregious Viral Misquote

Pete Buttigieg on Monday morning praise President Obama and thanked an L.A. Times reporter for the “swift and honest correction of a misquote on [his] views of the Obama presidency.”

The reporter, Evan Halper, had quoted Buttigieg as saying, “The failures of the Obama era help explain how we got Trump.” The misquote, which Halper blamed on a “noisy recording at a loud rally,” should have been transcribed as “failures of the old normal.” The original misquote had gone viral on Twitter, causing a negative Buttigieg hashtag to trend.

My story about @PeteButtigieg ends with him referring to the “failures of the Obama era.” That’s an inaccurate quote — the result of transcribing a noisy recording at a loud rally. His exact words were “failures of the old normal”

— Evan Halper (@evanhalper) November 11, 2019

I deeply regret the mistake When we make errors we own them. This one really hurts because it went viral. Here’s the candidate’s full remark: “I also fundamentally believe that there is no going back. My message is not about going back to where we were.

— Evan Halper (@evanhalper) November 11, 2019

I think because I come from a part of the country where normal has been a real problem for a very long time, and I think the failures of the old normal help explain how we got to Trump, I am much more interested in building a future that is going to have a lot of differences.”

Tweeted Halper: “My story about @PeteButtigieg ends with him referring to the “failures of the Obama era.” That’s an inaccurate quote — the result of transcribing a noisy recording at a loud rally. Here is the interview – he clearly is talking about going back to “the old normal”

— Cook County IL for Pete Buttigieg (@CookCounty4Pete) November 11, 2019

Buttigieg tweeted on Monday: “I appreciate this reporter’s swift and honest correction of a misquote on my views of the Obama presidency. From health care to DADT repeal to the rescue of the auto industry, my appreciation of the great leadership of Barack Obama comes from a very personal place.”

Mediaite reports: “The LA Times article has been updated to correct the quote from Obama, but curiously no note of correction has been included.”

NEW: @PeteButtigieg reacts in my new @NBCNews interview this morning to being misquoted supposedly criticizing Obama.

Actual quote, which was from the bus:

“My message is not about going back to where we were, getting back to normal…I think the failures of the old normal help explain how we got to the Trump period.” t.co/VS5bgwwGII

— Amanda Golden (@amandawgolden) November 11, 2019

It is audio from the bus- not a rally. @evanhalper’s tweet about that was also wrong. Other reporters on the bus have separately confirmed the audio from the bus. See @amandawgolden, for instance. t.co/ibTxiuBL7D
