Did the ‘gay’ high school couple in those viral TikToks queer-bait us?

Did the ‘gay’ high school couple in those viral TikToks queer-bait us?

In a viral and now-deleted series of TikTok videos, an offscreen high schooler flirts with another student named Ben before asking him to go steady. And in what seemed like a heartwarming twist, the offscreen paramour reveals himself to be another teen boy, Vulang Nguyen.

I found the cutest Tik Tok thread and the last one makes it even cuter ? I’m sobbing pic.twitter.com/Rkewexi6oc

But Nguyen, who created the romantic videos, said he’s that straight and that he was just subbing in for Ben’s real-life girlfriend.

When one Instagram commenter asked, “Bro r u gay or u just joshing,” Nguyen responded, “straight lmao.”

And in another Instagram comment, he explained, “Ben’s girlfriend is camera shy so we just used my face at the end.”

Suffice it to say, social media users were displeased. And amid the uproar and queer-baiting accusations, Nguyen created a Twitter account to set the record straight, so to speak.

“Hi, I’m the creator of the TikToks. I’d just like to reply to the assumption that this twitter thread carries that the TikToks my friend and I made were ‘queer bait’ and that we’re homophobic,” he wrote. “First and foremost, we do not have any wicked raises to any groups of people. We have the upmost [sic] respect for the LGBT+ community and their struggles in our society. Never did we think about mocking the LGBT+ community.”

He went on: “We made the videos to poke fun at highly romanticized videos all over social media, and suddenly they blew up. We were not ‘pretending to be gay for clout,’ the videos were made for fun, and our friendship ultimately grew through the process. Plus, the videos were meant to be wholesome parodies — regardless of our sexual orientation or gender. I apologize for not being clear about the videos being not serious, but I did not expect them to blow up as much as they did over the internet.”

Happily, there are plenty of stories of actual gay teen couples ready to pull our heartstrings.

Gay Man Uses Brie Larson as Emotional Support (Literally) After Proposing to His Boyfriend

Gay Man Uses Brie Larson as Emotional Support (Literally) After Proposing to His Boyfriend

It seems that Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Holland weren’t the only ones getting engaged at ACE Comic Con in Chicago over the weekend.

One of Brie Larson’s gay fans used the actress as emotional support (literally) after his proposal to his boyfriend, and the photos have gone viral.

In the photos, taken at a meet-and-greet, a man gets down on one knee and presents the ring, later clutching the actress (presumably after getting a ‘yes’ answer).

Tweeted Larson: “Y’all I was present for a proposal and I am CHANGED. Much love to the happy couple!!!!”

Oh Sandy! HBO announces a new TV series based on ‘Grease’

Oh Sandy! HBO announces a new TV series based on ‘Grease’

We’ve got chills, and they’re multiplying…

HBO has just announced a series order for Rydell High, a spin-off musical show based on the popular musical film Grease.

Like the film that inspired it, Grease: Rydell High will take place in a camp version of the 1950s, and feature full-on musical numbers. Songs will come from the popular tunes of the period, and include original compositions as well.

“This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock ‘n’ roll musical,” Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max head of original content, said in a statement. “It’s Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs.”

The original 1978 film version of Grease starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and became a smash hit upon release. It went on to spawn the unfortunate sequel Grease 2 and remains a cult hit to this day. The series will debut on the streaming service HBO Max, though a release date has yet to be announced.

Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie Bring Down FOX News’ Roger Ailes in New ‘Bombshell’ Trailer

Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie Bring Down FOX News’ Roger Ailes in New ‘Bombshell’ Trailer

A new trailer and poster have been released for the upcoming Roger Ailes drama Bombshell, about the sexual harassment scandal surrounding the FOX News honcho. Charlize Theron is a dead ringer for Megyn Kelly, Nicole Kidman is Gretchen Carlson, and Margot Robbie is fictitious news producer Kayla Pospisil in the film about the women who brought down the FOX News honcho.

Nathaniel Rogers over at Film Experience writes that buzz is excellent following the film’s first screening in L.A.: ‘Reviews for the film are embargoed for another eight weeks or so, but various sources online are saying Charlize Theron’s “transformational” performance as Fox News personality Megyn Kelly is explosive and catapults her into the top of the Best Actress race… Word also looks great for Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie in the Supporting category, as well as a potential Supporting Actor nod for John Lithgow as creepy Roger Ailes.’

The drama, directed by Jay Roach, also features  Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton, Mark Duplass, Rob Delaney, Malcolm McDowell and Allison Janney.
