LISTEN: Cece Peniston accuses Lizzo of ripping off her ’90s hit ‘Finally’

Cece Peniston, whose 1992 club hit “Finally” reserves her a place on any gay dance floor in perpetuity, has accused Lizzo of ripping off the song.

Peniston says a portion of “Finally” is too close for comfort to part of Lizzo’s 2019 song “Juice,” and our close analysis (aka playing it 5 times and conducting an office poll) yields polarized results.

Some think the sections are closely related, while others have a reaction that is best expressed by this commenter:

“Did [Peniston] become an astronaut after [she] stopped singing? Cause the reach on this post is astronomical.”

The referenced post comes directly from Peniston’s official Instagram account.

Peniston wrote:

This marks the second time this month Lizzo has been on the receiving end of plagiarism accusations.

Producer Justin Raisen recently accused Lizzo of using a line that he, Lizzo, Jeremiah Raisen, songwriter Jesse Saint John, and producer/songwriter Yves Rothman wrote for a demo titled “Healthy” on “Truth Hurts” without properly giving credit.

The line — “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch” — wound up being something of a calling card for Lizzo, so we can understand why the stakes are so high.

Raisen posted receipts to Instagram:

The Truth about “Truth Hurts” On April 11th, 2017, we wrote a song called “Healthy” w/ Lizzo, Jesse St John, and Yves Rothman at our studio. “I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch” was taken from “Healthy” and used in “Truth Hurts”. We were never contacted about being credited for the use of the parts of “Healthy” (melody, lyrics, and chords) that appear in “Truth Hurts”. After reaching out to Ricky Reed and Lizzo’s team about fixing it, we put the song in dispute in 2017 when it came out. We’ve tried to sort this out quietly for the last two years, only asking for 5% each but were shutdown every time. Coming forward publicly to family, friends, artists, and colleagues seems to be the only way at this point in relieving some of our emotional distress caused by this. The last thing we want to do is throw any negativity toward Lizzo’s momentum and movement as a cultural figure. If we believe in what she’s preaching, believing in ourselves & our own voices is something we thought she’d understand. Shout out to the singer Mina Lioness ( @minalioness ) for tweeting “I just did a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch”. A meme of that came up in our writing session & inspired the lyric and melody we wrote together. If Ricky and Lizzo’s team decide to settle this dispute with us, we would like to share some of the proceeds with Mina for her influence on Healthy. The clip below shows a video & photos from the day we wrote “Healthy” along with the comparisons between the two works. All the Love, Justin & Jeremiah Raisen #lizzo #truthhurts #healthy #billboard

BREAKING: Historic Victory for Marriage Equality in Northern Ireland

BREAKING: Historic Victory for Marriage Equality in Northern Ireland

HRC celebrates the culmination of years of advocacy and organizing as legislation enacted by the United Kingdom Parliament establishing marriage equality in Northern Ireland becomes law, with the first legal marriages to be allowed in the new year.

The Northern Ireland Executive Formation Act of 2019, passed by Parliament on July 24, ordered the region’s Secretary of State to effectuate access to marriage for same-sex couples if members of the now-dissolved Northern Ireland Assembly failed to form a working government by today. The legislation provides for a three-month transition before marriage for same-sex couples becomes available in January 2020, with February 14, 2020 — Valentine’s Day — the first day marriages may be registered.

“Today marks a historic victory for the rights of the LGBTQ community of Northern Ireland,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Unlike much of the United Kingdom, same-sex couples in Northern Ireland had been denied the right to marriage equality for years. The overwhelming support and tireless efforts of advocates and allies have made this day a reality. We congratulate them on this critical milestone for LGBTQ equality.”

Political deadlock in Northern Ireland made it one of the last parts of the United Kingdom where same-sex couples could not marry. The UK Parliament broke that deadlock in July with an amendment, offered by Labour Party MP Conor McGinn, to a technical bill that legalized marriage equality in Northern Ireland. The terms of the amendment guaranteed marriage equality would go into effect if Northern Ireland’s legislature failed to reconstitute.

In 2014, the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act of 2013 won passage in Parliament after months of debate, extending marriage equality to England and Wales. Later that year, the Scottish Parliament passed a similar bill, but Northern Ireland’s legislature voted against a motion introduced by Sinn Féin that would have legalized marriage equality.

In 2019, several other countries, including Austria, Taiwan and Ecuador, enacted marriage equality. Nearly two decades ago, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize marriage equality, and today same-sex couples can legally marry in 28 countries.

HRC Foundation, through its Global program, supports the work of communities throughout the world in advocacy of marriage equality and recognition of the full rights of LGBTQ people. This month, HRC announced a major initiative to pursue strategic litigation in countries where they can make a difference. Bringing its decades of experience to the table, HRC will work with in-country partners (including local advocacy groups) and top-tier international law firms to thoughtfully identify change opportunities and support impact litigation efforts as part of broader efforts in the movement for LGBTQ equality.

This new endeavor will be complemented by HRC’s capacity-building efforts for local advocates through HRC Global’s Partnerships in Innovative Advocacy program. In addition to strategic litigation, HRC will work with organizations on topics ranging from designing advocacy campaigns, challenging discriminatory laws and policies, engaging allies and changing societal institutions to be more inclusive. HRC will engage its global alumni network of more than 125 highly respected civil rights leaders and advocates from 80-plus countries to support this work.

The Fight for Montego Bay Pride Goes On

The Fight for Montego Bay Pride Goes On

Post submitted by HRC Global Senior Manager Taylor N. T. Brown

More than 3,000 LGBTQ community members and allies planned to gather last week in Montego Bay, Jamaica, to celebrate the city’s fifth annual Pride. The theme of this year’s Pride was “Let Love Live.”

But the event, intended to celebrate the lives of LGBTQ people, build connections, advocate for change and demonstrate the resilience and inclusivity of the local community through film screenings, public forums and faith services, never happened — because of the discriminatory actions of Montego Bay Mayor Homer Davis.

In September, Davis spoke out against the planned Pride events, characterizing a scheduled discussion on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional. He also refused to allow the event to take place at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre, asserting it would “disturb the sacredness and purpose of why that building is there.”

Davis’ words reverberated throughout the community, and Montego Bay Pride organizers found that venues would no longer rent to them. Disturbingly, the local police also informed organizers that they could not guarantee their safety at a planned march, forcing Pride organizers to cancel this year’s events.

When HRC learned of these developments, we reached out to Pride organizers, shared news about the dangerous implications of Davis’ actions and, on Sept. 25, sent a letter to the mayor and other officials voicing support for Montego Bay Pride and Jamaicans’ fundamental rights.

Montego Bay Pride has since filed a complaint with the Supreme Court of Jamaica claiming that Davis’ actions were “discriminatory, unconstitutional and ultra vires,” or beyond his jurisdiction. On Oct. 14, the Supreme Court issued an interim order ensuring Montego Bay Pride the right to rent space from the Montego Bay Cultural Centre for Pride.

Davis appealed the decision, and secured a stay of the court order. In a subsequent appeal by Pride organizers to lift the stay, the Court of Appeal sided with the mayor on a technicality.

Despite these setbacks, Montego Bay Pride organizers continue to fight for Pride and ensure their rights to free speech and assembly. HRC joins them in calling on the mayor to uphold their fundamental rights.

These events demonstrate the continuing challenges LGBTQ people in Jamaica face in seeking to exercise their fundamental rights. But they also show the world the remarkable resilience of the LGBTQ community and its allies in Montego Bay.

HRC encourages other allies of Jamaica’s LGBTQ community and those wishing to support Montego Bay Pride organizers to amplify these stories on social media. We must lend our voices to advocates on the ground to let Mayor Davis know that he cannot block LGBTQ Jamaicans from exercising their fundamental rights.
