PETE BUTTIGIEG. Mayor Pete finds a voice in crowded Democratic field: ‘The Navy veteran with a hard-to-pronounce name, from a city small enough to fit every resident in a college football stadium, seems to be winning the argument at the moment. Weeks after declaring his interest in challenging President Trump, he has become, if not exactly well-known, a subject of interest for many Democratic voters, buoyed by a breakout performance at a CNN town hall on March 10.’

DONNA BRAZILE. Former DNC Chair joins FOX News.

GET COOKING. Antoni Porowski tries to keep up with a professional chef.

SUPERCUT OF THE DAY. Lindsey Graham’s pro-Trump conversion.

EGG BOY. Dean Cain said he would have “knocked that kid cold.”

WISCONSIN. Swing voters are tiring of Donald Trump: “I think he’s a dirty crook that lies, cheats, and steals when he can,” said George Engelmann, a 49-year-old Obama/Trump voter. “There’s just a plethora of things that are still coming out.”

IDENTITY EUROPA. 7 U.S. servicemembers found to belong to white supremacist group.

WHINE OF THE DAY. Donald Trump Jr. attacks “big tech” for alleged censoring of conservatives. ‘There is no conservative principle that even remotely suggests we are obligated to adopt a laissez-faire attitude while the richest companies on earth abuse the power we give them to put a thumb on the scale for our political enemies.’

FACEBOOK. We’d like to run local news but there isn’t enough of it: “Facebook and rival Google have shouldered blame for creating local news deserts by upending the business models of small, local newspapers. Now, the tech giant wants to invest heavily to reverse that trend in order to provide users with the local news they crave.”

SECOND CHANCE. Disney re-hires James Gunn eight months after firing him over tweets.

KISS CAM. L.A. Kings featured 5 same-sex couples on Pride Night.

STRIP DOWN, UNDERWEAR UP. Nico Tortorella is thirsty again.

SUPERGIRL. Trans woman’s lawsuit forces change in San Francisco protest policy: ‘Shawn Sunshine Strickland, a homeless woman known as the “Supergirl of San Francisco” for her ubiquitous superhero attire, filed a federal lawsuit against the City and County of San Francisco in September 2018. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, cites two specific incidents from 2017 in which sheriff’s deputies, who provide security at City Hall, forced Strickland off the steps, claiming she didn’t have a permit to protest. She sued over what her lawyer Donald Wagda called the city’s “unconstitutional policies.” The lawsuit is currently pending.

Five Things You Should Know About U.S. Figure Skater Timothy LeDuc

Five Things You Should Know About U.S. Figure Skater Timothy LeDuc

Post submitted by Mark Lee, former HRC Senior Content Manager

Recently, HRC sat down with Timothy LeDuc and Ashley Cain, 2019 U.S. National Champions in pair skating, to talk about equity, queer excellence and rising from the ashes. LeDuc made history when he became the first openly queer person to win a national championship in pair skating. He hopes that his journey inspires other LGBTQ people to live authentically. The pair competes next in the ISU World Championships this week in Saitama, Japan.

Here are five things to know about LeDuc.

1. He first realized that he was gay when reading a book about figure skating.

Until then, he always knew that he was different, and remembers feeling alone and anxious because he had never met another gay person and had no one to talk to. That’s one of the reasons he wants to be a visible LGBTQ role model — so that other young people know that they are not alone.

2. He wants to make it clear that he is a queer skater.

LeDuc said that some people try to “straight-wash him or separate my identity as a skater and as a person,” noting that fans sometimes ask him why his sexuality matters when it comes to skating. He says it’s important that the world understands that what he does on the ice is queer excellence.

3. He looks up to LGBTQ athletes including Rudy Galindo, Eric Radford and Chris Mosier.

LeDuc’s queer role models are ice skaters Galindo and Radford, as well as triathlete Chris Mosier. He actually ran into Mosier at the US Olympic Training Center, but was too starstruck to introduce himself to the transgender trailblazer.

4. He recommends the book “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo.

LeDuc emphasized the importance of “never feeling that (you’ve) arrived at a destination of enlightenment” when it comes to social justice and inclusion work. He strongly believes that learning is an ongoing and lifelong process, and that being humble and open to the experiences of other people is the best way to foster empathy. Acknowledging his privileges, LeDuc said that self-examination and doing the work to understand the effects of systemic racism, colonialism, misogyny and other forms of oppression are critical to moving equity forward.

5. He wants his legacy to be about overcoming adversity.

LeDuc and Cain persevered time and time again to be the 2019 National Pair Skating Champions, fighting through body-shaming, injuries and homophobia to come out on top. LeDuc said that he wants to be remembered for his tenacity, both on and off the ice, adding that he and Cain would “love to be known as the skaters who were down and out then came back and won.”

With LGBTQ Youth at Risk, Senator Joe Manchin Must Reverse Course & Support the Equality Act

With LGBTQ Youth at Risk, Senator Joe Manchin Must Reverse Course & Support the Equality Act

63% of West Virginians support adding nondiscrimination protections for the 58,000 LGBTQ people in the state

Manchin’s opposition to Equality Act continues long trend of the Senator opposing LGBTQ acceptance

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today called on U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) to reverse course and support the Equality Act, which would provide protections for LGBTQ people in West Virginia at their workplace, in their schools, and in their homes. In a statement, Manchin voiced his concern about how his constituents could implement the Equality Act locally, if passed.

GLAAD launched a digital campaign asking West Virginians to demand the Senator support the Equality Act that would protect more than 58,000 people who identify as LGBTQ in the state.

“While it’s easy to understand Senator Joe Manchin’s concerns about the federal government’s power over local authorities, 58,000 LGBTQ West Virginians cannot have their safety remain on the line as they wait for their state government to defend them,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “The Equality Act presents an opportunity to protect LGBTQ people from harassment at schools, at work, or even in their homes in his home state of West Virginia – and that’s about as local as it gets.”

Just weeks prior to the re-introduction of the Equality Act, Manchin’s West Virginia found itself in scandal after anassistant principal harassed a transgender boy for using a bathroom according to his gender identity. According to reports, Pete Livengood misgendered the student by challenging him to “prove” his gender at a urinal. Senator Manchin’s cousin was the superintendent of the school involved with the dispute.

Senator Manchin’s opposition to the Equality Act continues a long history of the Democratic senator opposing LGBTQ acceptance, including opposing marriage equality to supporting the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Senator Manchin’s Anti-LGBTQ Record

·         At the time of the Supreme Court ruling on marriage, was the only Democratic US Senator to oppose marriage equality

·         Only Democratic US Senator to not endorse the Equality Act.

·         The lone Democrat to not vote for repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

·         Supported the unconstitutional and discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

·         Opposed the Obama administration’s transgender guidance on transgender public school bathrooms, insisting that it should be a state-by-state decision.

·         Said transgender students should use staff bathrooms rather than the regular student bathrooms that match their gender.

·         Did not join his Democratic colleagues and sign a friend-of-court brief in support of marriage equality.

·         Greeted the Supreme Court’s ruling in support of nationwide marriage equality with the terse and non-committal statement: “America is a nation of laws, and we must respect and abide by the Supreme Court’s decision.”

Joe Manchin is Lone Senate Democratic Holdout on ‘Equality Act’

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) is the only Democratic senator who won’t support the recently reintroduced Equality Act, which would enshrine protections for LGBTQ people in the U.S. Constitution.

Said Manchin in a statement on Monday afternoon: “I strongly support equality for all people and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. No one should be afraid of losing their job or losing their housing because of their sexual orientation. After speaking with local education officials in West Virginia, I am not convinced that the Equality Act as written provides sufficient guidance to the local officials who will be responsible for implementing it, particularly with respect to students transitioning between genders in public schools. I will continue working with the sponsors of the bill to build broad bipartisan support and find a viable path forward for these critical protections so that I can vote in support of this bill.”

Politico reports: “[Manchin] and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) are the only congressional Democrats that do not support the legislation. Democratic leaders unveiled the bill last week and it is expected to be considered by the House later this year. The Republican Senate is unlikely to bring up the measure; Susan Collins of Maine is the only GOP co-sponsor. But if Democrats take back the Senate in the election next year, they may need Manchin’s vote given the strong possibility that the chamber will remain narrowly divided.”

Hi everyone! Thanks for the support with my most current client project, it’s much appreciated, I am looking so forward to showing my next few upcoming client projects (I’m flat out until late July.) – I hope you’re all doing magnificently well, I have been so busy as well, and been back and forth like a rag doll!
