Ice Cream Shop Worker Attacked Defending Gay Couple Pursued by Homophobic Mob of 15 Men at Utah Pride Festival

Police are searching for those involved in a disturbing homophobic mob attack at the Utah Pride festival in Salt Lake City on Saturday which left an ice cream shop worker with minor injuries and a gay couple very shaken.

Terrance Mannery, a worker at the Doki Doki ice cream shop where the gay couple sought refuge after being pursued, fought off a group of approximately 15 men who were chasing them and yelling homophobic slurs.

Said Mannery: “I stepped forward and was pretty much like no you’re not coming into the store and causing trouble.”

Mannery said they were throwing punches, and sustained a small injury to his face: “No weapons, no kicking. Just punches and they seemed like they were trying to pull me out but that kind of worked to my advantage because I wanted them out of the store.”

Witness Michelle Turpin described the mob as “all very clean cut, you know like blonde haired, blue eyed, typical Utah 20-year-old boys.”

The Salt Lake Tribune adds: “A woman outside the shop tried to break up the crowd as Mannery kept fighting, Mannery said. Finally, a security guard from a neighboring building approached, and the mob ran away.”

The store has no surveillance cameras. Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call 801-799-3000.

The Utah Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved.

VA SCHOOL BOARD IN GRIMM CASE APPEALS FED COURT DECISION AFFIRMING PROTECTIONS FOR TRANS STUDENTS: Gloucester County School Board has appealed a ruling affirming that Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects transgender students from discrimination — including being forced to use separate bathroom facilities. “No student should feel unsafe at school, regardless of gender identity. Transgender students are covered by Title IX and are entitled to the same rights and protections as every other student,” Sarah Warbelow, HRC Legal Director said of the original decision. Gavin Grimm had challenged the school district’s policy that prevented him from using the restroom that corresponded with his gender identity. More from Chicago Tribune.

CELEBRITY CHEFS AFFIRM THEY ARE #OPENTOALL:  Art Smith, a former “Top Chef Masters” star and personal chef to Oprah, is calling on LGBTQ bakers to take his “sweet advice” and spread the message that they are #OpenToAll following the ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop case. Last year, HRC organized the ‘Chefs for Equality’ brief that includes bakers, chefs, restaurateurs and other culinary industry leaders who oppose discrimination against LGBTQ people — the central issue in the case. HRC MOURNS ANTASH’A ENGLISH, TRANS WOMAN OF COLOR KILLED IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA: English was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting early Friday morning. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating her death as a murder, reports Action News Jax. Friend Taliyah Smith remembers English as “an unapologetic, bold and loyal person.” First Coast News reports that InCahoots Nightclub, where English was a popular performer, is hosting a benefit on Thursday to help her family cover burial costs.
