Houston drag queen raises thousands for hurricane survivors: ‘Though her home did not flood, Thorne-DuBois said she was stuck inside for days due to floodwaters that surrounded her neighborhood. The 22-year-old had an idea: She and some fellow drag performers would stream their show live on Facebook from their living rooms. They would also use the social media platform to encourage viewers to send tips, which they would donate to flood survivors. During the first hour of the show on August 28 — two days after the hurricane struck — Thorne-DuBois watched the donations pour in. At that point, she knew she couldn’t stop. The performance, she said, turned into a 9-hour-long “drag-a-thon.” She said they raised $3,000 during the first show.’

FACEBOOK. A look into its political giving: “Since 2012, Facebook has also favored politicians with anti-LGBT voting records. More than 40 percent of Facebook’s PAC contributions, totaling roughly $156,000, have gone to politicians voting against LGBT rights. Senate blocks vote on bipartisan amendment to protect the rights of transgender service members

Senate blocks vote on bipartisan amendment to protect the rights of transgender service members

NEW YORK –  GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today criticized the United States Senate for blocking the Gillibrand-Collins Amendment, that would have protected transgender service members from President Donald Trump’s discriminatory transgender military ban. This amendment received bipartisan support, however, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has refused to bring it up for a vote during floor debate for the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act.

Introduced by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY), this amendment would have prevented the Department of Defense from removing or blocking the enrollment of qualified service members solely on their gender identity. McConnell’s choice to block a vote goes against recent polling showing a majority of Americans in all fifty states oppose the president’s discriminatory ban on transgender soldiers.

“Senator McConnell and Republican Senate leadership chose anti-LGBTQ animus ahead of the clear will of the American people,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Transgender service members are expertly trained, well-qualified and deeply committed to protecting our country and the Senators who refused to speak out are not only directly attacking them, but our armed forces as a whole.”

Since President Trump’s initial tweets announcing his intent to break from the open service policy set in place after acomprehensive study including Armed Service leadership, medical experts, and advocacy groups, the Trump White House has been unable to provide any clear justification to this discriminatory policy.

Harvard Revokes Chelsea Manning’s ‘Visiting Fellow’ Invitation, Calling it a ‘Mistake’

Chelsea Manning

The Harvard Kennedy School revoked an invitation extended to Chelsea Manning, the transgender former U.S. soldier convicted of passing classified information to Wikileaks, to be a visiting fellow at the university, calling the invitation “a mistake.”

The NYT reports:

“I see more clearly now that many people view a visiting fellow title as an honorific, so we should weigh that consideration when offering invitations,” Mr. Elmendorf wrote in a letter posted on the Harvard Kennedy School website early Friday morning. “I apologize to her and to the many concerned people from whom I have heard today for not recognizing upfront the full implications of our original invitation.”

Ms. Manning was among a group, including Sean Spicer, the former White House press secretary, named on Wednesday as visiting fellows at the Kennedy School. Fellows travel to Harvard to meet with students and discuss politics and other topics.

Manning responded to the news, tweeting: “honored to be 1st disinvited trans woman visiting @harvardfellow  they chill marginalized voices under @cia pressure…so @harvard says @seanspicer & @Clewandowski_ bring “something to the table and add something to the conversation” and not me”
