HURRICANE IRMA. New storm threatens continental U.S. “Irma is likely to become a major hurricane and could become a Category 4 well before it reaches the Lesser Anteilles.”

BUT HER EMAILS. Trump lashes out at James Comey again.

NORTH KOREA. Putin says situation on verge of “large scale conflict.”

Robert MuellerRUSSIA PROBE. Robert Mueller enlists the IRS: “According to sources familiar with his investigation into alleged Russian election interference, his probe has enlisted the help of agents from the IRS’ Criminal Investigations unit. This unit—known as CI—is one of the federal government’s most tight-knit, specialized, and secretive investigative entities. Its 2,500 agents focus exclusively on financial crime, including tax evasion and money laundering. A former colleague of Mueller’s said he always liked working with IRS’ special agents, especially when he was a U.S. Attorney.”

British gay man attacked while on holiday with family: ‘His mum, who has asked to remain anonymous but lives locally, said she and her husband had gone to buy ice-creams when the attack happened. She said: “I got a call saying, ‘can you come back I’ve been attacked?’ “We rushed back and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The man had struck my son 15 or 16 times with what we thought was a walking stick but CCTV has shown it to be a metal bar.’

Here’s What You Need To Know Ahead of the September Primary Election in Charlotte

Here’s What You Need To Know Ahead of the September Primary Election in Charlotte

Post submitted by Hope Jackson, Southern Regional Field Organizer

The City of Charlotte is gearing up for the September 12 Municipal Primary Election in which Charlotteans will cast their ballot for mayor, city council districts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and four city council at large members.

On the heels of the Charlotte LGBTQ Community Candidate Forum and preceding Charlotte Pride, the Human Rights Campaign joined Equality NC and MeckPAC in announcing the endorsement of Mayor Jennifer Roberts for re-election in the Charlotte Primary. Equality NC and MeckPAC have also endorsed a slate of pro-equality Charlotte council candidates.

If you live in Charlotte, you can cast your ballot today! Here are some key dates and things to keep in mind:

  • Only City of Charlotte residents are eligible to vote in the Primary Election. You can check your voter registration and view a sample ballot at vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/ .
  • If you are not registered, you can register to vote and cast a ballot at an early voting location in your county using same-day registration.
  • One Stop Early Voting is Thursday, August 24 through Saturday, September 9.
  • Some early voting precincts open as early as 8:00 a.m. and close as late as 7:00 p.m.
  • Check the schedule for the early voting location closest to you by visiting: One Stop Early Voting Locations and Times
  • September 4 – early voting locations are closed in observance of Labor Day.
  • September 9 – 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  is the last day to early vote.
  • September 12 is Election Day. Polls are open 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. If you’re in line by 7:30 p.m. and the poll closes, stay in line as you will be allowed to cast your ballot.

Charlotte is the second largest city in the U.S. without LGBTQ-inclusive non-discrimination protections. Mayor  Roberts has been a staunch LGBTQ advocate in her support for non-discrimination protections and continuous fight against anti-LGBTQ legislation HB2 and HB142. We know that Charlotte needs a pro-equality mayor that will fight for all Charlotteans, without compromise. So that’s why we fully support Mayor Roberts bid for re-election and encourage you to do the same.

If you live in Charlotte and would like to join HRC volunteers in getting out the vote to re-elect Mayor Roberts, contact HRC Regional Field Organizer, Hope Jackson at [email protected].

‘Kill the Gays’ Pastor Kevin Swanson: God Sent Hurricane Harvey to Punish Homosexual Perversion: Listen

Kevin Swanson_2

Kevin Swanson, the Christian pastor who once recommended that all LGBT people be literally stoned to death, has said that Hurricane Harvey is god’s judgement on cities that have embraced “sexual perversion.”

Speaking on his radio show Generations yesterday, Swanson said:

“Jesus sends the message home, unless Americans repent, unless Houston repents, unless New Orleans repents, they will all likewise perish. That is the message that the Lord Jesus Christ is sending home right now to America.”

Swanson continued that anyone who does not assume that a major weather event is the work of a fictional deity must be a bit thick because it’s clear Houston was hit for “persecuting pastors and churches.”  Additionally, warned Swanson, the city recently had “a very, very aggressively pro-homosexual mayor.”

Right Wing Watch reports:

“I think that the entire state of Texas and the entire United States of America needs to take note of this,” Swanson warned, “and realize that there is a God in heaven, He brings His judgments and He calls nations to repentance, as He is doing right now.”

Swanson went on to note that the remnants of Hurricane Harvey are heading toward New Orleans just as the city prepares for its annual Southern Decadence festival, saying that God is giving the city a “head’s up” before it hosts “the largest sexual perversion event in the country.”

“Is anybody paying attention in New Orleans?” he asked.

“Unless you repent, you will likewise perish,” Swanson proclaimed. “And repairing your houses in Houston after a hurricane is useless if you’re just going to go to hell.”

Meet Taylor Davis, the Cubs Catcher Who’s Got an Eye for the Camera: WATCH

Taylor Davis

Baseball minor-leaguers aren’t usually known to make a lot of headlines, but there’s one Iowa Cub who’s going viral this week because of his season-long love affair with the camera.

Writes Sports Illustrated‘s Dan Gartland:

Davis has what a football scout would call field awareness or a basketball evaluator would call court vision. He always knows exactly where the camera is and when to hit it with a steely glance.

At first I thought the bit might be a practical joke against one particular camera operator but then I realized he’s doing it with every single lens in the ballpark.

Said Davis of his newfound fame: “The camera just found me and the camera loves me, what can I say?”

HRC STANDS #WITHDREAMERS AND AGAINST HARMFUL PLANS TO RESCIND DACA:  HRC joined governors, attorneys general and hundreds of elected officials and other civil rights organizations across the country in a letter supporting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and Dreamers. The letter comes amidst reports that Donald Trump is considering ending DACA after ten attorneys general from across the country called for it to be rescinded. That would leave immigrant youth who were brought to the U.S. as children — including an estimated 75,000 LGBTQ Dreamers — without work permits, driver’s licenses, and vulnerable to deportations. Read the full letter here.

HUNDREDS OF CHRISTIAN LEADERS DENOUNCE ANTI-LGBTQ “NASHVILLE STATEMENT”: Hundreds of Christian leaders, pastors, theologians and advocates have denounced the vicious, anti-LGBTQ manifesto “Nashville Statement” with a powerful statement affirming the inclusion of LGBTQ and intersex people within faith communities and broader society. The 10-point treatise, titled Christians United, holds “that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and that the great diversity expressed in humanity through our wide spectrum of unique sexualities and gender identities is a perfect reflection of the magnitude of God’s creative work.” In the first 24 hours of its release, the Christians United statement was signed by over 1,000 Christians from around the world, including top theologians and leaders of some of the world’s most influential Christian denominations. More from HRC.

  • “Evangelicals are killing LGBTQ youth from the inside out — soul first,” writes Cody Sanders in a piece for Baptist News. “If those of us who stand in contradiction to the theology represented in the Nashville Statement are going to make any lasting difference, we must stop being content to affirm in subtlety and silence or with once-a-year celebrations,” he writes. Not everyone will select to serve, but it should be open to everyone.” Despite the Trump-Pence ban on transgender military service to ban qualified transgender people from military service, Jensen said, “We have supported them, and we will continue to support them going forward.” More from Minnesota Public Radio.

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY — SAME-SEX COUPLE SEPARATED BY TRUMP’S MUSLIM TRAVEL BAN FINALLY MARRY: In a heartbreaking HRC video earlier this year, Paul Harrison recounted how Trump’s executive order targeting seven Muslim-majority countries put on indefinite hold his plans to marry his Iranian fiancé. But on August 5, thanks to his determination and support from HRC and other civil rights groups including the ACLU, Harrison and his fiance finally reunited on American soil and married 10 days later in a small civil ceremony in Texas.
