DESTROY IT, RATHER. Trump wants to “radically remodel” the State Department: “My suspicion is that within the White House, particularly amongst the nationalist faction … that this seems to actually be a concerted effort to diminish the role of the State Department in U.S. foreign policy and hamper its abilities to pursue policies that would be considered overly globalist,” said Stewart Patrick, who served on the policy planning staff at the State Department in the George W. Bush administration.

I said — I may not have said it this way — at least you got to tell us that there has been no discussion of pardons at this point. And he did not answer. The possibility of presidential pardons in this process concerns me and also would be, I think, a really, really bad move.”

Trump’s lawyers knew about it more than three weeks ago: “Trump told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday that he learned just ‘a couple of days ago’ that Donald Jr. had met with the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, hoping to receive information that ‘would incriminate Hillary’ and was “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump….Trump repeated that assertion in a talk with reporters on Air Force One on his way to Paris Wednesday night.”

And sure, maybe this is just a marketing gimmick for a new album or tour — but we all thought Donald Trump was just promoting his reality TV show, too.”

Donald Trump Jr

Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting to collect dirt on Hillary Clinton from a Russian lawyer had an additional attendee: a former Soviet counterintelligence officer who is now a Russian-American lobbyist.

NBC News reports:

The lobbyist, Rinat Akhmetshin, denies any current ties to Russian spy agencies. He accompanied the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, to the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower attended by Donald Trump Jr.; Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law; and Paul Manafort, former chairman of the Trump campaign.

The Russian-born American lobbyist served in the Soviet military and emigrated to the U.S., where he holds dual citizenship.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Akhmetshin acknowledged attending the meeting, though he said it was not substantive. “I never thought this would be such a big deal, to be honest,” he told the AP.

Mediaite adds:

According to court filings, Akhmetshin is a U.S. citizen, now living in Washington D.C. He founded and serves as the CEO of International Eurasia Institute for Economic and Political Research, which provides research on business disputes for Russian and Kazakhstan clients.

Though Akhmetshin contends he is no longer a Kremlin agent, Browder notes that in “the world of Russian intelligence, there is no such thing as a ‘former intelligence officer.’”

The meeting occurred five days before the Democratic National Committee was attacked by hackers working on behalf of Russia’s intelligence agency.

Don Jr.’s lawyer told NBC on Thursday that there also may have been a sixth person at the meeting.

Gov. Abbott brings anti-LGBTQ activism to kick-off “special discrimination session” this Tuesday

Gov. Abbott brings anti-LGBTQ activism to kick-off “special discrimination session” this Tuesday

Republican Texas Speaker Joe Straus: “I’m disgusted by all this…I don’t want the suicide of a single Texan on my hands.”

Anti-trans legislation could put lives at risk, drain $3 billion from Texas state economy

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today released “What Texas’ Special Session Means For LGBTQ Texans,” a video highlighting Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s “special discrimination session” against the transgender community. The video is available ahead of the start to the special session on July 18th and forecasts what would be a dangerous, anti-LGBTQ agenda at the Texas State Capitol.

Anti-LGBTQ activists already this year, including Gov. Abbott, have advocated for legislation that openly targets and discriminates against transgender Texas, barring them from public accommodations in accordance with their gender identity. Not only has a so-called “bathroom bill” been opposed by the majority of Texans and big businesses across the country, but it could drain about $3 billion from the state’s economy while also putting the safety of transgender Texans in jeopardy. Even the Speaker of the Texas House, a Republican, voiced his opposition to the anti-trans bills – saying he was “disgusted by all this” and did not “a suicide of a single Texan on [his] hands.”

[GLAAD VIDEO: What Texas’ Special Session Means For LGBTQ Texans]

“Governor Greg Abbott is ignoring calls from elected officials on both sides of the aisle, Texas’ biggest corporations, and young people living across the state to force his own personal anti-LGBTQ agenda. If the governor moves forward with this harmful legislation against transgender Texans, then LGBTQ people, businesses, and fair-minded Texans will respond in Texas style – Big,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Transgender Texans have experienced harassment and threats because of state officials directly targeting them this last session and any further attacks will only cement Governor Abbott’s legacy as turning Texas into a state that harms its most marginalized citizens.”

This anti-LGBTQ special session follows what can only be described as a “discrimination session” against marginalized communities across the state. From shoving through HB 3859 – which allows adoption agencies to now use so-called “religious exemptions” as a weapon to deny LGBTQ families the ability to adopt a child – to the signing a ban on “sanctuary cities” into law, Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Legislature have promoted an out-of-touch agenda at the expense of the state’s most vulnerable.

Since the start of this year’s session, GLAAD has been on the ground fighting the onslaught of anti-LGBTQ legislation in Texas. This spring, GLAAD coordinated with Equality Texas and Texas Freedom Network to hold numerous “Students Against Hate” rallies on college campuses across the state where Texans came together to share their voice and fight back against the anti-LGBTQ bills being perused at the statehouse. Further, GLAAD teamed up with Equality Texas, The Ally Coalition, and more than 160 leading artists, entertainers, and influencers to release an open letter opposing anti-LGBTQ bills, including the so-called “bathroom bill,” that threatened to harm LGBTQ Texas. The letter demonstrated widespread disapproval for dangerous legislation.
