To LGBTQ Refugees & Asylum Seekers: The U.S. Should Welcome You

On World Refugee Day, HRC honors the strength, courage and contributions made by countless refugees in the U.S. and around the world. Today we recognize all refugees, including LGBTQ refugees who are seeking refuge from persecution and violence they face in their home countries.

These perilous times have been compounded by the rise of the Islamic State, government regimes and other anti-LGBTQ organizations looking to hamper or end any human rights progress. Concerns continue to mount for those looking for safety in the U.S. only to have their dreams deferred by President Trump and his administration’s discriminatory policies.

Since the day he was sworn into office, Trump has been adamant in issuing directives that would close our borders and turn away those at most risk of facing real harm in their home countries. However, his travel ban, which blocked refugees and travel from several predominantly Muslim countries, has stalled in the courts. Just recently the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously to keep Trump’s refugee and Muslim ban on hold — another resounding defeat by the federal courts in recent weeks.

While the latest developments signal a positive trend that the U.S. will not tolerate discrimination based on religious identity, there are still far too many many countries that will condemn, persecute, and even execute LGBTQ people just because of who they are.

In Chechnya, dozens of gay and bisexual men have been detained, beaten and tortured, yet local authorities have refused to acknowledge the matter. Last week, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he hadn’t raised the issue of the Chechen atrocities with the Russians at all. HRC has called on the U.S. government to condemn these crimes and grant victims refuge in the U.S. Unfortunately, only a handful of countries have provided a safe haven for them.

Chechnya isn’t an isolated event, since across the globe — from the Middle East, to Libya and Sub-Saharan African — anti-LGBTQ violence is commonplace. This year, two Iraqi soldiers spoke before HRC’s fourth Annual Time To THRIVE Conference describing their heroic story of falling in love in the Middle East, only to then spend years fleeing and fighting to find a place to call home together.

We face the largest refugee crisis in history, with roughly 65 million people displaced globally — including tens of thousands of LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers — we must demand our elected officials do more to face this growing crisis. Today, and everyday, HRC and dozens of human rights organizations will speak up and stand up against discriminatory policies wherever they appear — at home and abroad.

Robin Roberts Receives the HRC Visibility Award

ABC Broadcast Journalist Robin Roberts was presented with HRC’s Visibility Award by her sister at the 2017 HRC Louisiana Gala.
The HRC Visibility Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of those who use their talent and visibility to help better the lives of LGBTQ people. A two-time cancer survivor, Roberts courageously came out publicly in 2013. She has consistently given a public voice to challenges LGBTQ people face. In a recent episode of “Good Morning America” previewing a special ABC News report on abusive gay “conversion” camps, Roberts talked about her Christian parents and how thankful she was for their support. “No one was more religious than my parents,” she said. “I’m so grateful, especially after seeing this, how supportive they were of me as a gay woman and my family and friends and I’ll never forget my mother saying, ‘God loves you because of who He is not because of anything you do or don’t do.’”

D.C. Gay Men’s Chorus Surrounds and Drowns Out Homophobic Street Preachers: WATCH

gay mens chorus

Over the weekend, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington D.C. performed at Knox Pride festival in Knoxville, Tennessee.

After their performance, as the group was driving away in their bus, they noticed the group of homophobic street preachers who were shouting and holding signs like “Homo Sex is a Sin” near the Pride stage, The Washingtonian reports:

Thea Kano, artistic director of the chorus, says about eight people were protesting with signs outside the Pride stage when they arrived. After the chorus’ performance, the singers got onto the bus to head back to the hotel. As the bus was moving away Kano noticed the protesters were still out and yelling at passersby, so she asked the bus driver to stop.

And then they piled off and worked their magic:

CNN’s Jim Acosta has had it with “useless” Sean Spicer and the stonewalling from the White House on issues of national importance.

Said Acosta this afternoon after attending an off-camera press gaggle at which Sean Spicer (who is apparently searching for his replacement) took a question from a Russian reporter and not CNN:

“The White House press secretary is getting to a point, Brooke, where he’s just kind of useless. You know, if he can’t come out and answer the questions and they’re not going to do this on camera or audio…why are we having these briefings or gaggles in the first place?”

Acosta said that Spicer has still not got an answer for the press on whether Trump believes in climate change, a question that was posed weeks ago.

Acosta also tweeted: “Make no mistake about what we are all witnessing. This is a WH that is stonewalling the news media. Hiding behind no camera/no audio gaggles. There is a suppression of information going on at this WH that would not be tolerated at a city council mtg or press conf with a state gov. Call me old fashioned but I think the White House of the United States of America should have the backbone to answer questions on camera.”
