PULLING U.S. FROM U.N. HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL COULD ENDANGER LIVES AROUND THE GLOBE: HRC expressed concern about reports that the Trump administration may withdraw the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which has taken historic steps to protect and promote the human rights and dignity of LGBTQ people around the globe. News of the threat comes amid scores of human rights crises around the globe, including the persecution and torture of LGBTQ people by the Chechen government, ISIS and other regimes worldwide. “Consider the message the United States would send to the world if it were to disengage from the UN Human Rights Council,” said Ty Cobb, Director of HRC Global. “U.S. foreign policy must protect and promote human rights. Turning away from the Council would signal to brutal regimes — and all those they oppress — that the U.S. is looking the other way. Without U.S. leadership, despotic leaders will be emboldened to control the agenda and push their own dangerous goals.” Last month, HRC submitted written testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in support of the UNHRC. U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Marine’s ‘Religious Freedom’ Appeal: VIDEO

U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Marine’s ‘Religious Freedom’ Appeal: VIDEO

Monifa Sterling

The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from a former Marine who was court-martialed for expressing her religious beliefs in the workplace.

Lower courts had previously ruled that orders from Monifa Sterling’s superiors did not constitute a “substantial burden” on her First Amendment rights. Sterling was taken to task after she continued to post biblical verses at her desk, despite orders from a superior that she remove them.

Defending Sterling, Kelly Shackelford, CEO and chief counsel for the First Liberty Institute said:

“Because the Supreme Court did not decide to review the case, the travesty below by the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces will now stand.

“The military court’s outrageous decision means federal judges and military officials can strip our service members of their constitutional rights just because they don’t think someone’s religious beliefs are important enough to be protected. Our service members deserve better.”

Military.com reports that Sterling was originally court-martialed for various offenses including disrespecting a superior officer, disobeying lawful orders, and failing to report to an assigned duty.

Her court challenge stemmed from orders to remove a personalized version of a biblical phrase from Isiah 54:17: “No weapon formed against thee shall prosper.”

Her superior repeatedly ordered her to remove copies of the verse from her workspace. When she refused, her superior trashed them.

Sterling was reduced in rank and given a bad-conduct discharge. She later left the service.

In its original 4-1 opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces rejected “the argument that every interference with a religiously motivated act constitutes a substantial burden on the exercise of religion.”

Sterling’s legal team acknowledged their client did not ask for permission to post or repost the verses but called the earlier ruling against her “shameful” and “wrong.”

Recursos en Español: HRC Launches Hub for Spanish-Language Resources

Recursos en Español: HRC Launches Hub for Spanish-Language Resources

Post submitted by Milagros Chirinos, HRC Bilingual Media Manager-Spanish

Today HRC launched Recursos en Español de HRC, to expand outreach and resources for Spanish-speakers as well as Spanish-language media. HRC’s top resources will now be available in Spanish, including guides on a range of issues — from health, education, youth and religion to family and coming out — as well as videos and blog posts highlighting the experiences of members of the Latinx LGBTQ community.

“The LGBTQ community is as diverse as the fabric of our nation,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “HRC en Español ensures that our groundbreaking and lifesaving resources are available and accessible to the millions across this country and around the world who belong to Spanish-speaking communities. With the Latinx community facing unprecedented political attacks, now more than ever, HRC stands with all LGBTQ Latinx people in all that we do.”

Despite historic progress on LGBTQ equality within the United States and in many Latin countries, significant challenges remain for the Latinx LGBTQ community throughout the Americas, including discrimination, homelessness, and violence. Recursos en Español de HRC includes original content and resources reflecting the broad range of experiences and needs within the Latinx LGBTQ community and provides support to those working to build inclusive spaces within the Latinx communities in the U.S. and around the globe. Additionally, HRC will be increasing its Spanish language presence on social media, including Twitter.

“These much-needed resources are now accessible not only to LGBTQ Spanish-speaking Latinx people, but also their family members, neighbors, friends, and allies who wish to affirm and support their LGBTQ  loved ones,” said Milagros Chirinos, HRC’s Bilingual Media Manager-Spanish. “Our communities must be inclusive and welcoming for all people  — no matter who they are, where they come from, or whom they love.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent estimates, Hispanic people in the United States constitute 17.6 percent of the nation’s total population. There are more than 56.6 million people of Hispanic origin living in the U.S. and 72.9 percent of them speak Spanish at home. Since 2012, the percentage of Latinx LGBTQ people living in the U.S. has seen the largest increase among racial minorities, from 4.1 to 5.3 percent.

Working toward equality for the full diversity of the LGBTQ community has always been an important part of HRC’s mission. Recursos en Español de HRC elevates the message of inclusion for the Latinx, LGBTQ, immigrant and ally communities that wish to share their stories, advocate for justice and learn more about LGBTQ topics.

Jim Himes

Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT)was called in to CNN’s New Day on Tuesday morning to elaborate on a couple of tweets that many people may agree with.

Tweeted Himes on Sunday: “Those who wish us ill are noting the unhinged, demented behavior of the President over an attack OUTSIDE the US. They’re thinking….Escalating a feud with a recently attacked mayor/key global ally. Based on a misreading of what the mayor said. The President is dangerous.”

Completely delusional. I dont know how people like McMaster, Mattis, Cohn & Powell can serve this (if I may use Trumpian quotes) “man”. t.co/MBfZYdfSGB

Said Himes: “What Donald Trump did in response to the British tragedy was inappropriate for a toddler much less the president of the United States…The president of the United States is damaging the security of the United States and making us a laughingstock around the world at a moment in time when American leadership is particularly critical.”
