‘EastSiders’ Season 3 Needs Your Help Getting On the Road

‘EastSiders’ Season 3 Needs Your Help Getting On the Road

The beloved web series EastSiders is coming back for a third season.

After two wildly compelling seasons chronicling the fraught relationship between Cal (creator Kit Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis), this season of the Emmy-nominated series sends the pair on a road trip from New York to California.

In addition to writer-director Williamson (Mad Men) and Hansis (As the World Turns), season three also features the return of cast members Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat), Stephen Guarino (Happy Endings), Willam Belli (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Traci Lords (Crybaby), Jonathan Lisecki (Gayby), Brianna Brown (Devious Maids), Matthew McKelligon (You’re Killing Me) and John Halbach. More exciting cast announcements are expected in the coming weeks.

The new season was filmed on-location in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada and California, but producers are seeking an additional $60,000 in crowdfunding for additional shoot dates and post-production. The series’ first two heart-breaking (and darkly hilarious) seasons successfully raised $178,000 previously.

To support the new season, visit www.eastsiderstheseries.com. You can stream seasons 1 and 2 of EastSiders now on Netflix.

Tel-Aviv to Host First Ever Bi-Themed Pride Parade

Tel-Aviv to Host First Ever Bi-Themed Pride Parade

Post submitted by Laya Monarez, HRC Membership Outreach Coordinator

This year, Tel Aviv’s pride celebration will be the world’s first ever bisexual-themed pride parade. Starting on June 9, more than 200,000 participants are expected to join the annual celebration in Israel.

As a bi identified trans woman, this parade is truly inspiring to me. As the co-chair of HRC’s Bi Pan Queer Fluid Employee Resource Group, I help to make sure the organization bi-inclusive.  Often times people in our community feel like they are invisible and are constantly aware of the stigma surrounding bisexuality.

While our sexual orientation is often overlooked, according to the Williams Institute and HRC Foundation’s own research, studies suggest that about 50 percent of people who identify as either gay, lesbian, or bisexual, identify as bisexual. This makes the bisexual population the single largest group within the LGBTQ community. In fact, the number of bisexual adults in the U.S. is growing, according to the CDC’s National Survey of Family Growth. That survey found that younger adults of all genders are especially likely to identify as bi.

As the Membership Outreach Coordinator at HRC, I work closely with our pride department and help to make sure all of our pride materials get to more than 200 pride events. Find us at a local pride near you. It’s easy to sign up, volunteer and get involved. Maybe you can be the first to organize a bi-themed parade in your own city!

I hope we learn from this amazing parade and it inspires our own versions in the U.S.  Its existence is truly amazing and affirms all bisexual identities, showing the world that we are not alone.

Nevada Governor Signs Bill Protecting LGBTQ Youth From Dangerous “Conversion Therapy”

Nevada Governor Signs Bill Protecting LGBTQ Youth From Dangerous “Conversion Therapy”

HRC praised Nevada Republican Governor Brian Sandoval for signing into law Senate Bill (SB) 201 — legislation protecting LGBTQ youth in the state from the dangerous and discredited practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” HRC also commended State Senator David Parks for sponsoring the bill and shepherding it through to the Governor’s office.

“No child should be put through the dangerous and inhumane practice of conversion therapy,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Medical professionals agree this outdated and discredited practice not only doesn’t work, but can also have life-threatening consequences. It is nothing short of child abuse. We thank Governor Sandoval and the Nevada State Legislature for passing these crucially important protections for the state’s LGBTQ youth.”

Nevada becomes the tenth jurisdiction — and the third state so far this year — to enact these crucially important protections. Connecticut, California, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, and New Mexico all have laws or regulations protecting youth from this abusive practice. A growing number of municipalities have also enacted similar protections, including cities in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

“I want to thank my colleagues in the Senate and the Assembly for their bipartisan support of Senate Bill 201,” said Nevada State Senator David Parks, who sponsored the bill. “Conversion therapy is a dangerous, discredited practice that has been shown to cause anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide among LGBTQ youth. By enacting this ban, Nevada will join eight other states and the District of Columbia in taking a strong stand to protect young people from psychological and physical abuse.”

“Conversion therapy,” sometimes referred to as “sexual orientation change efforts” or “reparative therapy,” encompasses a range of practices that seek to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. These practices are based on the false premise that being LGBTQ is a mental illness that needs to be cured — a theory that has been rejected for decades by every major medical and mental health organization.

There is no credible evidence that conversion therapy can change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. To the contrary, research has clearly shown that these practices pose devastating health risks for LGBTQ young people such as depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness, and even suicidal behavior. The dangerous practice is condemned by every major medical and mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Medical Association.

HRC has partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and state equality groups across the nation to pass state legislation ending conversion therapy.

More information on the lies and dangers of efforts to change sexual orientation or gender identity can be found here.
