‘Flash’ Actor Keiynan Lonsdale Comes Out as Bisexual
Keiynan Lonsdale, who plays Kid Flash/Wally West on the CW series The Flash, came out as bisexual over the weekend in an Instagram post.
Said Lonsdale:
I like to change my hair, I like to take risks with how I dress, I like girls, & I like guys (yes), I like growing, I like learning, I like who I am and I really like who I’m becoming. Spent way too many years hating myself, thinking I was less valuable because I was different.. which is just untrue. A couple years ago I was able to accept myself, & it saved my life, but now I’ve gotten to a new road block & I feel kind of lost. I gotta take the next step & actually embrace who I am, which is pretty exciting.
Not faking shit anymore, not apologising for falling in love with people no matter their gender. I’ve become bored of being insecure, ashamed, scared… no one should feel like that about themselves, especially when there is so much good life to live. Ya know more & more I see so many young people being their best / truest selves, it’s fucking inspiring… so what have I been waiting for!? Who knows. Everyone in their own time. I hope we can all learn to embrace who we are & not judge people who aren’t exactly the same as us. The truth is we are all family, we’re all one. Just love. Keiy. ❤

Hundreds of LGBTQ Service Members Attend the American Military Partner Association Gala
Over the weekend, more than 400 LGBTQ service members, military spouses, veterans, and allies attended the Fourth Annual American Military Partner Association (AMPA) Gala — a record turnout for the Washington, D.C., event.
The mission of the gathering was simple: celebrate and honor America’s courageous LGBTQ modern military families who’ve sacrificed so much in keeping our country safe.
With the strength of more than 50,000 members and supporters, the AMPA is the nation’s largest non-profit organization of LGBTQ military and veteran families.
HRC is not only a proud sponsor of the event, but our very own National Press Secretary Stephen Peters — a Marine veteran and spouse of an active duty Marine — is also AMPA’s founder and active member of the organization.

LGBTQ service members who were once forced into the shadows are now able to live openly following the repeal of the harmful “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy (DADT) and the end of the transgender military ban. The event served as a reminder to those in attendance of how grateful we are for their service and contributions.
Not only did the celebration honor the remarkable military families for their courage and sacrifice, it also marked the official launch of the organization’s new AMPA Military Spouse Scholarship — a program aimed to help military spouses pursue their higher education goals. Through education, advocacy and support provided by extraordinary organizations like AMPA, LGBTQ military families are not only living openly and proudly, but are able to thrive knowing they have these vital resources to help them with military life.

At today’s press briefing, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster closed with the revelations that “the President wasn’t even aware of where this information came from” that he shared. “He wasn’t briefed on the source or method of the information.”
The statement resonates because Trump has stated in the past that he doesn’t need daily intelligence briefings because “I’m, like, a smart person.”

Support Transgender Youth In Your Classroom This Thursday

On Thursday, May 18, HRC’s Welcoming Schools program and the National Education Association (NEA) will hold the second annual National I Am Jazz School and Community Readings. Hosting one of these readings in your community is one of many ways that teachers, principals, PTAs, and local community members can show transgender students that they aren’t alone.
I only wish this type of event existed when I was in elementary school. Before I even came out as transgender, I remember asking one of my elementary school teachers if she had any books with “a kid like me” as the protagonist, struggling to find language to ask for reflections of myself as a gender-creative kid. The best she could do was hand me Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet. While that book became one of my favorite books as a kid, it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. My teacher knew what I was asking for, but she didn’t have the resources to help.
However, with books like I am Jazz, Annie’s Plaid Shirt, and Introducing Teddy times have changed. There are more books on the market to help children and adults alike understand gender and what it means to be transgender. Allowing students to hear and read stories that reflect their realities is just one way to help all youth to succeed in school academically and socially. The best part? You can get involved right now.
You can make a difference by signing up to read I Am Jazz in a classroom or community on May 18.
What does it mean to host a reading?
All you have to do is gather a group of people together or schedule time in your classroom and read I Am Jazz. At HRC’s first annual day of reading last year, more than 3,500 people across the country joined us.
Last year, the reading events were incredibly diverse and creative. Some readings included just a few friends in a living room or were held by teachers in their classrooms, while others were open to the public in libraries or places of worship. You can make your event as small or as big as you’d like.
How will HRC help you to host an incredible event?
After signing up, here’s what you need to host a successful event:
- The I Am Jazz organizing kit which includes:
- A lesson plan to go with the book
- Discussion questions for both adults and youth
- Some of our favorite transgender-related school resources
- A group of people who want to learn about and support transgender youth (both youth and adults love this book!)

DISGRACEFUL — TRUMP LEAKS CLASSIFIED INFO TO RUSSIANS, WHILE FAILING TO CONDEMN THEIR FAILURE TO STOP TORTURE AND MURDER OF GAY MEN IN CHECHNYA: In a sobering piece published this morning by The Washington Post, Samar Habib (@samarhabib80) details how President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have facilitated the erasure of LGBTQ people at home, and violence against them abroad. Under the headline, “Here’s how Trump-Pence policy is already affecting LGBT lives in Chechnya,” Habib writes that Trump-Pence have remained silent about the alarming reports out of Chechnya, “a sharp change from the government’s strong defense of LGBT lives under the Obama administration.” If Chechnya is persecuting gay men as reports and victims have detailed, “it is precisely because the government recognizes that the U.S. won’t organize any opposition,” Habib says. (@SenatorCardin) demanded a “vocal U.S. government response” to the human rights abuses occurring in Russia by Chechen authorities under the Putin regime. According to numerous media outlets and human rights organizations across the globe, authorities in Chechnya have been rounding up dozens of men on the suspicion of being gay. They have been humiliated, tortured, placed in detention and killed. The United States must lead the way in demanding global human rights for all. HRC FILES AMICUS BRIEF WITH MAJOR COMPANIES SUPPORTING GAVIN GRIMM: HRC has filed a “friend of the court” brief signed by 59 major U.S. companies supporting transgender student Gavin Grimm in G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Grimm, a transgender boy, filed suit against the school board alleging it violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 by denying him use of the boy’s restroom. “These companies are sending a powerful message to transgender children and their families that America’s leading businesses have their backs,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “Across the country, corporate leaders are speaking out because they know attacking transgender youth isn’t just shameful — it also puts the families of their employees and customers at risk. Transgender students like Gavin are entitled to the full protection of the law, and must be affirmed, respected and protected in the classroom and beyond.” The 59 signing companies represent over 1.6 million employees and $670 billion in revenue. TRUMP EXPANDS ‘GLOBAL GAG RULE’ PUTTING MILLIONS AT RISK WORLDWIDE: HRC has condemned the Trump Administration’s massive expansion of the so-called “Global Gag Rule,” (GGR) which prevents U.S. funding of science-based, non-governmental health organizations around the world that provide abortion information, referrals or services. “HRC has long opposed the ‘Global Gag Rule’ and any policies that seek to limit access to critical healthcare services,” said HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs, JoDee Winterhof in a statement yesterday. “This egregious expansion is particularly concerning and puts millions of more lives at risk, including those living with HIV and AIDS. Withholding U.S. aid as a tool to limit women’s access to health is simply un-American and stands in direct opposition to our country’s role as a global leader for democracy and human rights.” Ironically, the Trump Administration’s announcement comes at the beginning of National Women’s Health Week. ALL-OUT ASSAULT ON LGBTQ RIGHTS IN TEXAS LEGISLATURE: Rick Jervis (@MrRJervis) of USA Today lays out succinctly the high stakes equality battle playing out in Texas, where HRC is fighting bills attacking LGBTQ people on all fronts — from undermining marriage equality to allowing discrimination against LGBTQ prospective parents and children in the state’s adoptive or foster system, to barring transgender people from accessing public spaces. Texas is not alone in its unprecedented attack — HRC is tracking more than 130 anti-LGBTQ bills in 30 states. As HRC Senior Legislative Counsel Kate Oakley told USA Today: “It’s happening all around the country. Unsurprisingly, Texas just does it bigger.” More from USA Today.
FIRST FEDERAL HATE CRIME CONVICTION FOR MURDER OF TRANSGENDER PERSON: Yesterday Josh Vallum was sentenced to 49 years in prison for the brutal 2015 murder of 17-year-old Mercedes Williamson. This case marks the first time that the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act has been used to prosecute a suspect for targeting a victim because they were transgender. Vallum pled guilty in December for violating the federal hate crimes law. “There is an epidemic of violence against transgender people, and particularly women of color, across the country,” HRC Mississippi Director Rob Hill told The New York Times. “And yet today is the first time a perpetrator will be sentenced under federal hate crimes charges for killing a transgender person because that crime crossed a state line.” More from The New York Times.
