Speaking to Outsports, Arizona Republic sports editor Mark Faller said:

“My-King Johnson was one of three finalists for the Courage Award, which we present to student-athletes who show strength in the face of difficult or trying circumstances.

“The other two finalists had their own challenges. One quarterbacked a football game two days after the unexpected death of his father. The other stood up to racist taunts directed at him at a basketball game.

“This is the second season of our program, which is a year-long salute to the best in high school sports culminating with a spring awards show. For all of our awards we canvass the state for nominees, select three finalists, then the staff votes to choose a winner, which is announced at the event.”

When he plays for Arizona this fall, Johnson will become the first openly gay player in college football’s FBS division.

He did not attend the awards ceremony because the invitation ended up in his school coach’s spam folder.

Watch an Arizona Wildcats profile of Johnson below.

Gay Qantas CEO Pied in the Face by Christian Bigot Angry at Corporate Support for Same-Sex Marriage: WATCH

Gay Qantas CEO Pied in the Face by Christian Bigot Angry at Corporate Support for Same-Sex Marriage: WATCH

Alan Joyce

Alan Joyce, the openly gay boss of Qantas, said he will press charges against a man who pied him to protest the CEO’s “corporate bullying” over same-sex marriage.

67-year-old Tony Overheu, a former farmer and devout Christian, shoved a lemon meringue pie into Joyce’s face at a business breakfast yesterday.

Glad too that #alanjoyce determined to press charges against bigot who assaulted him. Message needs to be sent. #Qantas #TonyOverheu #LGBT

— Adam Long (@adamlong80) May 10, 2017

Although Overheu apologized by email for the attack, Joyce said he intends “to send a message that this type of behaviour isn’t acceptable.”

SBS reports:

Mr Overheu claims the Qantas CEO is part of a network of corporations including Airbnb, Wesfarmers and Holden that are trying to impose gay marriage on Australians.

He was referring to 20 corporate chief executives signing a letter in March urging Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to legislate same-sex marriage and not hold a gay marriage plebiscite.

Mr Overheu says he attended a barbecue on the weekend, in which other people were also “pee’d off” about “special interest groups” overriding the individual and society’s will.

“I feel very deeply about this theme of corporate bullying … middle Australia completely rejects corporate bullying aimed at social engineering,” he told 6PR radio.

“It would appear Alan Joyce is part of a network trying to subvert the federal parliamentary process around the issue of marriage equality.

“Figures overstepping the line have got to anticipate there will be push back.”

However, Joyce said he would not be intimidated by Overheu’s actions. “I have every intention to continue to be vocal on those social and community issues,” he said. “Qantas has always spoken up on gender issues, on LGBTI issues, on Indigenous issues and we will continue to do so and no attempt at bullying us into suppressing our voice will work.”

Overheu said that his wife is furious because she believes his actions are not consistent with Christianity. One of his daughters has posted a message on social media in support of same-sex marriage, adding “I love my idiot dad.”

(Photo by Bryan Bedder/Getty Images for GLAAD)Rosie O’Donnell presented the Vito Russo Award to Tony and Grammy Award-winning performer Billy Porter at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on May 6.

In his acceptance speech, Porter called attention to the Presidential administration’s attack on “all of us,” and urged all communities to resist: “From slavery to emancipation, to the 13th Amendment, to Jim Crow to the Civil Rights Movement, from Stonewall to AIDS, to Marriage Equality – remember whose shoulders we stand on.”

“Let’s use the historical strides we’ve made as a nation to empower us as warriors on this battlefield for equality,” Porter added. “It’s time to protect our inalienable rights.”

The Vito Russo Award is presented to an openly LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance. The Award is named for Vito Russo, a founder of GLAAD and celebrated ACT UP activist, who pushed open the door for news and entertainment industries to include LGBTQ performers and stories. Previous Vito Russo honorees include Anderson Cooper, Ricky Martin, George Takei, Cynthia Nixon, Rosie O’Donnell, RuPaul, Tom Ford, Thomas Roberts, Suze Orman, and Alan Cumming among others.

Billy Porter is a Tony and Grammy Award-winning singer, actor, playwright and director. Most recently, he released the album Billy Porter Presents: The Soul of Richard Rodgers, which features soulful takes on classic Richard Rodgers songs alongside spoken messages about acceptance. He is an outspoken advocate for racial justice and LGBTQ issues who has advanced LGBTQ stories on and off the stage. Porter received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his groundbreaking performance as drag artist Lola in the hit musical Kinky Boots. He also created theatre productions While Yet I Live and the GLAAD Media Award-nominated Ghetto Superstar (The Man That I Am), both about his life growing up as black, gay, Christian man in Pittsburgh, PAPorter pushed for marriage equality as a Board Member of the Empire State Pride Agenda and consistently demonstrates his commitment to LGBTQ youth by working with organizations including the Ali Forney Center for LGBTQ homeless youth in New York City. Earlier this year, Porter shared his wedding to longtime partner Adam Smith with the world, remarking, “It’s still important to show the world what our love looks like.”

“Billy Porter is a trailblazer who has helped move inclusion forward for marginalized communities in theatre and music communities,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD, in a previous statement announcing the honor. “Whether advancing acceptance on the stage or off, he sends unabashed messages of pride to LGBTQ youth and out performers around the world.”

The Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards were held April 1 at the Beverly Hilton. The 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta Airlines, Hilton, Ketel One Vodka, Liberty Mutual Insurance, and Wells Fargo.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives.  They also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBTQ community that build support for equality and acceptance.
