Speaking with 10TV, Sandhu said:

“I thought I was going to die. I thought for sure this was the end…they just started saying like ‘f****’ to us and stuff like that, and we were like what? And just kept walking. And they were like, ‘God hates f***.

“Then all of the sudden a bottle gets thrown at us. And they were saying, ‘You’re going to hell,’ and all that stuff. We at that point stopped, turned around, we took a photo of the license plate.”

According to the couple, at this point a second car pulled up. Four or five men got out of the vehicle and joined in the assault.

“They were like, ‘You trying to mess with my boy?’ And then all of the sudden they start, they punch me in the face, throw me on the ground. and next to me he was going through the same thing with the other five black guys,” said Sandhu. “Each took a turn- punch, kick. Punch, kick. They were like, ‘Yeah, yeah.’ Punch, kick. ‘You like that?’”

Beier added:

“I don’t know if it was like my own personal self-protection or what, but my vision went black and my brain just kind of shut down and I almost stopped feeling for a minute.

“I was crying and begging them to stop, and I just know that whatever they were looking for, they did not find.”

Police are currently investigating and will consider whether to classify the attack as a hate crime.

ALERT: Anti-Transgender Legislation Returns in South Dakota

ALERT: Anti-Transgender Legislation Returns in South Dakota

Post submitted by HRC Regional Field Organizer Christopher Cooke

The 2017 legislative session is underway in South Dakota, and LGBTQ students are under attack. SB 115, which was filed on January 25, is a shameful bill targeting transgender students by prohibiting them from using school facilities consistent with the gender they live every day.

Does this sound familiar? That’s because it is. Last year, South Dakota lawmakers pushed nearly identical legislation. HB 1008 would have prevented transgender students in public schools from using restrooms and other facilities consistent with their gender identity.

HRC joined with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and ACLU of South Dakota, Believe Out Loud and Reconciling Ministries, Freedom for All Americans, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and the Transgender Law Center to deliver over 80,000 petition signatures to Republican South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard urging him to veto HB 1008. One week later, Daugaard stood on the right side of history and vetoed the bill.

HRC will continue working with our coalition partners to ensure that discrimination does not become the new norm for South Dakota.

Jess Herbst becomes Texas’s first openly transgender mayor

Jess Herbst becomes Texas’s first openly transgender mayor

Eight months after taking office, a Texas mayor has come out as transgender in an open letter posted on her small town’s website.

“As your Mayor I must tell you something that has been with me since my earliest memories,” New Hope Mayor Jess Herbst writes. “I am Transgender.”

This makes Herbst the first openly transgender mayor in Texas, as The Texas Observer reports.

Found in one of the state’s most conservative suburbs (about 40 miles northeast of Dallas), New Hope currently has 640 registered voters.

Herbst’s journey is currently being documented on her blog, “Jess Herbst: Ramblings of a middle age transgender being,”

Talking to The Huffington Post, Herbst says her experience has been overwhelming positive.

“I have received emails congratulating me, calling me brave and even one expressing pride in living in a town with a mayor like me,” she says. “I never hoped for more than simple tolerance, the outpouring of support is unprecedented.”

In her open letter to the town, Herbst touches upon the support she’s received from her family:

“It is gender identity not sexual preference that applies to me. I love my wife, and she loves me, we have no intention of change. My daughters have been adamant supporters of me and are proud to tell people their father is transgender.”

“I live my life as a female now, and I will be performing my duties to the town as such,” Herbst writes.

You can read the full statement below:

As the new mayor of New Hope, I would like to tell you all what a privilege it is to serve you. Since 2003 I have had the privilege of being an alderman, road commissioner and mayor pro-them. In May of 2016, I became your mayor.

My wife has lived in New Hope since she was 2 years old. Along with our 2 daughters, we have lived here since 1999, on the same farm my wife was raised. I was born and raised in Greenville, Texas.

As your Mayor I must tell you about something that has been with me since my earliest memories. I am Transgender. Two years ago, with the support of my wife, daughters and son-in-law,  I began Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). At the time, I did not imagine I would hold the Mayors position, but here I am.

I know that transgender people are just coming to light in our society, and we have made great strides in the last few years. Celebrities like olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox from the show ‘Orange is the new Black’ and popular shows like ‘Transparent’ , society finally has a chance to see and learn about who we are. It is gender identity not sexual preference that applies to me. I love my wife, and she loves me, we have no intention of change. My daughters have been adamant supporters of me and are proud to tell people their father is transgender.

I am self employed and all of my customers have been understanding and supportive.

I live my life as a female now, and I will be performing my duties to the town as such. I have written a blog documenting my decision process and experiences as transgender and I think you would find it contains much insight. The site is JessHerbst.Com

I’m not especially sensitive to the pronoun I’m called, and I expect people to take time to make the change. I use the name Jess, a simple change from Jeff.

I will continue as Mayor and hope to do the very best for the town. Please feel free to email me questions or comments, my email is [email protected]. The Monthly Town Council meetings are on the last Tuesday of every month, at Town hall on Rockcrest. The meeting begins at 7:30pm. There is a spot for public comment at the beginning of each meeting if you wish to address me, or the council about this or any other town matter. I encourage you to do so, it really is the best way for the council to know what issues need addressing.

Thank you for your attention.

Man Sues Grindr Over Fake Profile After 700 Men Come to his Home Seeking Sex

Man Sues Grindr Over Fake Profile After 700 Men Come to his Home Seeking Sex

Matthew Herrick Grindr

Matthew Herrick says he is the victim of what amounts to catfishing-by-proxy and serial harassment, and has sued the gay dating app Grindr to make it stop.

The 32-year-old actor/model might have expected to be hot property on the app if he himself had set up the profile featuring his picture, pulled from his Instagram account, which has close to 27,000 followers.

Instead, he alleges that his ex-boyfriend is behind the false account, which has actively solicited hundreds of men and provided them with Herrick’s address and contact information. He has brought suit against Grindr in an attempt to have the account shut down and prevent furthers from being made:

In a lawsuit he filed against Grindr last week in the Supreme Court of New York[,] he accuses Grindr of negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false advertising, and deceptive business practices for allowing him to be impersonated and turned into an unwitting beacon for stalkers and harassers.

Herrick’s civil complaint against the company states that despite contacting Grindr more than 50 times, Grindr hasn’t offered a single response beyond auto-replies saying that it’s looking into the profiles he’s reported. Even after a judge signed an injunctive relief order Friday to force Grindr to stop the impersonating profiles, they persist: Herrick says that at least 24 men have come to his home and work since then. In total, he counts over 700 sex-soliciting men thrown into his daily life by the spoofed accounts since the ordeal began.

Beginning in October, the would-be suitors began to show up at his home, and later even his workplace, and insist upon the sexual encounters they had supposedly agreed; Herrick learned later that the false account would tell these men that he might pretend not to be interested or might have to send them away due to his roommate, but that they should return.

When WIRED contacted the ex-boyfriend, who is not explicitly named in the suit, he denied involvement and would not comment further due to another pending suit between him and Herrick, while Grindr would not comment at all.

While there have been safety-related concerns about Grindr and similar apps, it seems they can have a negative impact on the quality of life even of those who are not users, and provide a diabolical method of stalking and harassment from a distance. As with “revenge porn,” the courts and the legal system need to catch up with the technology.

Legislation Targeting Transgender Students Pulled in South Dakota

Legislation Targeting Transgender Students Pulled in South Dakota

Early Tuesday morning, state lawmakers in South Dakota pulled a dangerous bill that specifically targeted transgender students. Similar to legislation vetoed last year by Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard, Senate Bill (SB) 115 would have prohibited transgender students from using school facilities consistent with their gender identity. Governor Daugaard stood up again for equality this year, publicly opposing SB 115.

While dozens of people met at the capitol to oppose the bill, no supporters of the bill, including the prime sponsors from the house and senate, showed up. People offering testimony against the bill included education experts, the executive branch and business interests.

“This shameful legislation targeting transgender students was a blatant attack on young people who already face high rates of discrimination, marginalization and harassment,” said HRC Regional Field Director Hope Errico Wisneski. “We hope that the withdrawal of this bill, along with the outspoken criticism from Governor Daugaard, business and education experts ends the attacks on transgender students. HRC will remain vigilant and will be ready to fight similar legislation with our local partners this year and in the future.”

Last year, South Dakota lawmakers pushed similar legislation in an attempt to prevent transgender students in public schools from using restrooms and other facilities consistent with their gender identity. Major child advocacy organizations — including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselor Association, the Child Welfare League of America, the National Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of Social Workers, and the National Education Association — all made clear their grave concerns and objections to this type of legislation. Governor Daugaard stood on the right side of history and vetoed that bill.

“The unexpected withdrawal of SB 115 is a victory for transgender kids as well as all South Dakotans. After two years of legislative attacks on these vulnerable children we’re thankful that the message has been received and that our state leaders will get back to the critical business of the state,” Libby Skarin, Policy Director ACLU of South Dakota. “We hope transgender South Dakotans feel some relief knowing their rights are no longer on the line in Pierre. We are cautiously optimistic that this signals the end of the legislature’s intrusion into the lives of transgender kids, but we will remain ready to fight discrimination wherever we find it. Should the legislature wade back into the issue, or should a ballot measure campaign materialize, the ACLU – along with our partner organizations and dedicated allies – will unwaveringly stand in support of transgender kids and work to protect their right to live free from discrimination.”

In March of 2016, North Carolina lawmakers rammed into law a bill that contains a similar discriminatory measure and continues to wreak havoc on the people, reputation, and economy of that state. HB2 triggered a national outcry of opposition and a broad range of voices continue to speak out demanding its full and complete repeal. The economic fallout alone — including hundreds of millions of dollars in lost business — continues to grow as companies concerned with protecting their consumers and employees move conventions, trainings, operations, productions, and other events out of state. In November, former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory became the only incumbent governor from either party to lose on Election Day specifically because he championed and signed HB2 into law.

This bill in South Dakota is part of a number of anti-LGBTQ bills being pushed in 2017 by anti-equality activists around the country. HRC is currently tracking more than 60 anti-LGBTQ legislative proposals in 19 states. For more information, visit http://hrc.im/2017legislature.

Hunting gay men for sport: Australia investigating the deaths of 88 men as hate crimes

Hunting gay men for sport: Australia investigating the deaths of 88 men as hate crimes

Between 1976 and 2000, there were 88 deaths that police in New South Wales, Australia are considering reclassifying as antigay hate crimes.

According to The New York Times, police officials claim teenage gangs in Sydney would hunt gay men for sport, sometimes pushing them off cliffs to their deaths.

Related: Teenager Ben Bamford Found His Murder Victim On Grindr

These gangs were young men and occasionally women who prowled around for potential victims to harass. But initial investigations were often “perfunctory,” since, at the time, the police held openly hostile views of gay men.

One such case is the death of Scott Johnson (pictured) in 1988, an American citizen whose body was found at the foot of a cliff in Sydney, in an area notorious for suicides.

At the top of the cliff, Johnson’s clothes were discovered folded neatly in a pile alongside his watch, student ID, and a $10 bill. The overall consensus was that Johnson had killed himself.

His brother Steve continually put pressure on authorities to investigate the crime as a murder, and 28 years later, a new inquest finally overturned the original finding of suicide, but coroners still reached no conclusion regarding the death.

Last month, Steve Johnson told WCVB that upon discovering “there were three other cases of gay men that died at cliff sides that had probably been attacked by marauding teen gangs, I collapsed.”

There will be new evidence heard in June, and Steve Johnson hopes it will inspire other investigations into these deaths, regardless of the outcome.

“There was clearly a pattern to these deaths,” says Margaret Sheil, whose brother Peter was also found dead at the base of a cliff  in 1983.

Today, it is extraordinary to think that we would not have had an open discussion about what happened. And if we had, it might have prevented it happening to someone else.

“We can now see that predators were attacking gay men,” says Ted Pickering, the police minister for New South Wales in the ’80s.

“And they were doing it with the almost-certain knowledge that the police would not have gone after them. That was the police culture of the day.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Tomsen, a criminologist at Western Sydney University, doesn’t think the review is any sort of adequate response.

“It may be tempting for the police to concentrate on merely relabeling crimes rather than doing fresh detective work to solve them,” he says.
