HRC Mourns The Passing of Crystal Edmonds

HRC Mourns The Passing of Crystal Edmonds

On Friday, Baltimore police announced that 32-year old Crystal Edmonds, a transgender woman, died after being fatally shot early Friday morning. At the time of writing, no arrests have been made and authorities are requesting that anyone with information regarding Crystal’s death call the Baltimore police.

Few details are currently available about Crystal, her life, passions, and friends, but what is already clear is that her’s was a life lost far too early: Crystal is at least the 19th transgender person – nearly all transgender women of color – to be killed in 2016.

On Thursday in Washington, D.C., police arrested a man in connection to the murder of Deeniquia “Dee Dee” Dobbs.  Dee Dee was shot in D.C. in July and was described by those who knew her as someone who “loved to make you laugh. Loved to make you smile.”

The recent passing of Crystal Edmonds serves as a reminder of the urgent crisis of violence facing many transgender people.

To learn more about the realities that conspire to put transgender people — especially transgender women of color — at risk of fatal violence, read HRC’s 2015 Addressing Anti-Transgender Violence report, released in partnership with the Trans People of Color Coalition (TPOCC). The report also details solutions that can be pursued by policymakers, advocates and public and private sector leaders to address this national crisis.

Coming to Netfix this month: Lipglossy fashion mannequins clickety-clack in heels in Bratz: The Movie, bro; Kevin Bacon teaches a small-minded community there’s nothing wrong with dancing to Deniece Williams in Footloose; and Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton teach a megachurch’s choir how it’s done in Joyful Noise.

Puns and double entendres go into overdrive in a sketch that dares to ask, “What happens when a gay guy comes to the aid of two straight bohunks?”

Joe Jonas treats us to a preview of “your new favorite band” DNCE and the debut album on which he figured prominently (released November 18th):

This advert for Fifty Shades Darker just surpassed the record for most views online by a trailer in its first 24 hours, but do you think it’s even remotely sexy? Masquerade masks? FIREWORKS SYMBOLIZING SEX…!?!?

Here’s a new trailer for season 2 of Scream Queens, for those who like to meld their spooky with some studly.

Be Very Afraid: 7 Ways Donald Trump Could Become Our Next President

Be Very Afraid: 7 Ways Donald Trump Could Become Our Next President

trump-white-house

The idea of someone like Donald Trump becoming the most powerful man in the world would  normally seem delusional. Unfortunately, we live in delusional times. Over the past week, it’s become increasingly clear that Trump has a fair chance of capturing the White House. Despite the fact that Trump is a policy ignoramus, a compulsive liar, a dealer in fraud, a white supremacist enabler, and an all-around creep, he has been inching up in the polls as Hillary Clinton‘s lead shrinks. And this would be very bad news indeed for all things LGBTQ.

Related: Donald Trump Thinks Anderson Cooper Is Temperamentally Unfit To Moderate Debate

In large part, that’s because of Clinton’s disastrous week: the news of her (mild) pneumonia coming out only after she appeared unstable in public, her comment that half of Trump’s supporters were a “basket of deplorables.” (Which, by the way is a classic gaffe: it’s undeniably true, but political civility forbids such comments–at least by Democrats.)

The odds still favor Clinton, but if the trend continues, that won’t last for long.

Scary as it is to consider, here are seven ways that Trump could actually become our next president.

1. Wavering Republicans make their peace with Trump

One of Trump’s main problems is that, compared to past GOP nominees, he is under-performing among key voting blocs, especially suburban women and college-educated professionals. If those voters decide that they would rather risk a Trump presidency, with all its unknowns, than a Clinton presidency, with its predictable agenda, Trump could start making up some lost ground.

2. Trump continues to temper his language

The shifting polls aren’t just because Clinton is doing worse as a candidate. It’s also because Trump is doing better. Up until last Friday, when he reverted back to his Big Lie strategy, Trump has been relatively calm, at least by Trump standards. No attacking Gold Star parents or federal judges. Intentionally muddying the water on his anti-immigration rhetoric. A benumbed press actually treated the candidate as if he were normal. If Trump can keep that up, the numbness may extend to voters who are uncomfortable with Clinton and want a change, no matter what.

3. Clinton has another health scare

The last thing you want as a presidential candidate is footage of you looking like  you’re about to keel over, particularly when you haven’t told people you are sick. That’s the kind of thing that sows doubt in people’s minds. It also feeds another lie from Trump surrogates that Clinton is suffering from something more serious, like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, which, of course, she is not. She’s healthier than he is, according to medical experts.

4. An October surprise frightens the country

If there is a terrorist attack, particularly if it’s large scale and on American soil, Trump will voice the visceral response, which is kill them all and let God sort them out. His rhetoric of retribution and demand for a policy change (guaranteed to be unspecified or nonsensical) will make him look like the strong candidate. Clinton is plenty hawkish, but Trump will blame Obama and by extension her for whatever happened. Voters may be scared and prefer the extreme response, not a measured one.

5. Clinton’s supporters end up concentrated in just a few states

It’s entirely possible that we could see a replay of 2000: the candidate who wins the popular votes loses the election. Clinton could rack up large margins in her strongholds, like California and New York, but if she loses by even a razor-thin margin in the swing states that matter–Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, chief among them–it won’t matter. Trump could lose by millions of votes nationwide, but if he wins the Electoral College, that’s the only thing that counts.

6. Third-party candidates siphon votes from Clinton

At present, at least, the two third-party candidates–Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein–are polling far better than past third-party candidates. And their success comes at Clinton’s expense, especially with younger voters. (Bernie Sanders did not help Clinton in this regard.) If young voters decide that they want to send a message, their protest votes could siphon enough from Clinton to clear the way for Trump to win.

7. The mainstream media keep insisting on false equivalency

Judging from the volume of coverage in the press, you might think that the candidate whose foundation failed to deliver on State Department access to its big donors was just as bad as the candidate who routinely stiffs people working for him and rakes in money from scams. The mainstream media keeps replaying Clinton’s decisions, like her e-mail server, because there’s smoke there (and Clinton’s defensive crouch doesn’t help her). But there’s never any fire. Meanwhile, Trump is a towering inferno of unethical and possibly illegal practices. Yet the press doesn’t treat the two differently. The media shouldn’t pull it’s punches on Clinton, but right now it’s signalling voters that they are facing two equally bad choices.

Just in case you’ve been asleep for the past year, here’s a bulletin: Trump is a lot worse than Clinton.

These Are The Twenty Handsomest Colleges In The Country

There are many important things to consider when choosing your college. What is the admission rate? Where’s the college located? How many students attend? Is it one of the handsomest Universities in the motherf**king country?

That last question is almost never in the brochures, nor is it always easy to gauge while being taken on a campus tour. Fortunately, a website called Grooming Lounge has taken pertinent matters into its own hands and conducted an elaborate survey to find the “Twenty Handsomest Universities In The Nation.”

The criteria in their survey measured the men’s “commitment to appearance.” They based their findings on the following: amount spent on personal care services per man; amount spent on personal care products per man; amount spent on shaving needs per man; and amount spent on apparel per man, plus the fittest universities in the nation.

Here are their extremely handsome findings.

Out on the Red Carpet: LGBTQ Emmy Nominated Performers

Out on the Red Carpet: LGBTQ Emmy Nominated Performers

It’s here!  The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are taking place tonight, September 18, 2016, broadcast live on ABC at 7pm ET/4pm PT.  Earlier this week, GLAAD profiled several LGBTQ behind-the-lens producers, writers and directors … recognizing the tremendous contributions they make in setting the table for stories to be told by the many talented performers in our midst.  Right now, we look at those in front of the camera.

While scripted narratives may get alot of the glory, documentary producers play a special role.  For example, we’ve previously spotlighted the festival circuit award-winner Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Fourthe story of four Latina lesbians who were wrongfully convicted in 1994 of aggravated sexual assault and indecency against two young girls in San Antonio, TX.   In 2012 and 2013, after one of the accusers recanted and the forensic evidence used in the trial was debunked, the four women were released from prison … but they are still without freedom.  Investigation Discovery airs the world television premiere on Saturday, October 15 from 8-10 PM ET.

Making of a MurdererLast week, out creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos shared two Emmys for Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Writing for a Non-Fiction Program, and Laura Ricciardi won for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series for Making a Murder: Fighting for Their Lives, part of a Netflix documentary series that examined crime stories from an in-depth investigative format.  Before a scripted outline of actual events is brought to life on the screen, there are stories that demand to be told in the harsh light of reality; and that is why documentary producers spend years chronicling and shaping accounts of what happens in our world.

So before the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Primetime Emmy acting nominees walk down that red carpet … let’s spotlight LGBTQ honorees that are accelerating acceptance by changing the narrative of who we are and what we contribute to the world through the visual arts.  They are all previous nominees at the top of their game; fierce, funny and extremely creative.   Let’s begin.

Sarah Paulson

Known for the range of characters she portrays on screen and on Broadway (The Glass Menagerie and Talley’s Follies), SARAH PAULSON is a double nominee for her portrayal of Hypodermic Sally on FX’s American Horror Story:  Hotel (Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie) and as Marcia Clark in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, (Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie) also on FX.  As exemplified by her 6 Emmy noms to date, Sarah brings creativity and intensity to every role she portrays.  It’s also been confirmed that she will return for Season Six of AHS.

Tituss BurgessAlways a fan favorite, TITUSS BURGESS received his second nomination as Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Titus Andronicus in the hit Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.  Funny, bubbly, vocal and ever with a song, Titus is one of those memorable characters that lives on long after the episode is over.  And Season 2 was especially fun due to the introduction of a love interest, Mikey, for Titus.  As he shared with TheWrap: “It’s really funny to watch Titus be vulnerable and have to consider someone else’s feelings.”

Having come a long way fromThe Big Gay Sketch Show and a CBS Sketch Comedy Showcase at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood, KATE McKINNON garnered her third Emmy nomination for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.  From Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Hillary Clinton, to the hilariously weird Mermaid, Kate also appears on theatre screens in this summer’s Ghostbusters.

We know JANE LYNCH from the many film and television scripted roles that have garnered her 22 industry award wins and 29 nominations; among them Glee, Two and a Half Men, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration.  Her “performance” as game show host has brought her 3 Emmy noms and 2 wins.  Since its 2013 debut, Jane has been nominated every year for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for Hollywood Game Night; and won the first two!  We’ll see if the third time is also charmed.

Lily TomlinWith 23 nominations and 6 wins, LILY TOMLIN is no stranger to Emmy’s Red Carpet.  The Tony, Grammy, Emmy, and Kennedy Center Honoree always presents dignity and humor with strength and integrity in every role she inhabits.  Nominated once again for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Frankie in Netflix’ Grace and Frankie, Lily, and her co-star Jane Fonda, are role models for older women everywhere … but especially in the entertainment industry.

According to a recent USC Annenberg Study, The Rare & Ridiculed:  Senior Citizens in the 100 Top Films of 2015, “Older women in film are outnumbered at a rate of 2.7 to 1 compared to their older male counterparts.”  To see older women, strong and dynamic women (period!), on television provides authenticity to others still dealing with ageism in our world. And to see an out, older and extremely talented artist working across media platforms, honored with accolades and about to receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award … this accelerates acceptance of all LGBTQ people here and around the world.

Accelerating acceptance of LGBTQ people is most powerfully done one story at a time … one image at a time … one episode at a time … and one incredibly gifted performance at a time.  Content matters, and the power of entertainment media cannot be denied if we are to move to a place where you can “just be”:  A world that moves past “others” and proudly walks towards limitless possibilities.

CRACK, created in 2005 by Chris Farris, Karl Jones, and Shea Van Horn, is a non-profit 501(c)3 theater collaborative that is best described as a “low budget mess of stage and screen.” CRACK variety shows combine live performance, videos, and audience participation, and are hosted by a potty-mouthed drag queen named Summer Camp.

The unique events draw a cross-section of Washington’s communities and provide an opportunity for local LGBT and LGBT-friendly artists, performers, and designers who have fallen through the “cracks” of traditional theater to showcase their hidden (and sometimes questionable) talents. CRACK has carved out a unique niche in DC’s performance scene, having produced cabaret shows and short films that have been described as “irreverent,” “over-the-top,” “raunchy,” and “sophomoric.”
