Out, gay and deaf actor, director and writer Dickie Hearts was selected among top finalists as recipient of the inaugural SEE YOURSELF initiative, created to improve the presence of LGBTQ people and stories within television and film.  Dickie will receive $5k and a development deal to bring to life his original digital series pitch with Project Greenlight Digital Studios (PGLDS) and Section II.

Dickie Hearts“GLAAD is proud to have partnered with Project Greenlight Digital Studios and Section II in selecting Dickie Hearts as the recipient of the inaugural SEE YOURSELF production grant for his funny and groundbreaking pitch for ‘SAVE THE WORLD,” said Ray Bradford, Director of Programs, Entertainment Media, at GLAAD.

“Telling an episodic, comedic superhero story with a gay, deaf protagonist is not only unique and worthy of support, but it accelerates acceptance by amplifying the voices of queer people with disabilities, whose stories often go overlooked.”

Filmmakers were invited to submit a short pitch for an original digital series, focusing on themes relevant to LGBTQ audiences. The contest allowed a variety of genres to be submitted that ranged from dramatic, to comedic, to thriller, or documentary style.  Twenty semi-finalists were then selected and voted on by the public. The “audience winner” automatically moved to the Top Five where they and four other finalists were then asked to provide additional materials.

Dickie HeartsThe winning video is entitled SAVE THE WORLD and was made entirely by a deaf crew through sign language, with the exception of a sound person and voiceover artist, and there was a mixed deaf and hearing cast with interpreters on set. Grant recipient Dickie Hearts states:

“I am incredibly grateful and humbled by this amazing opportunity, which is truly a win for the LGBT, Sign Language, Disability, and Diversity communities. More importantly, I cannot wait to share this superhero love story that I am most passionate about.”

These finalists were chosen by the creative teams at PGLDS, Section II, and GLAAD, in addition to a panel of several LGBTQ-identified judges which included creator/writer/actor Kit Williamson (Netflix’s Eastsiders), writer/comedian Lauren Flans (Wild ‘N Out), and filmmakers David Au (Eat With Me), Michelle Ehlen (Butch Jamie), and Andrew Putschoegl (BFFs).

Adaptive Studios’ Vice President of Digital Video, Brittany Turner, said “We are beyond proud to have partnered with both Section II and GLAAD on this significant contest. We at Project Greenlight Digital Studios aim to provide opportunities to up-and-coming filmmakers. Collaborating with these two great organizations helped us extend that opportunity to emerging talent and showcase the LGBTQ community.” She continued “We’re very excited for Dickie Hearts and are looking forward to working with him on developing his original digital series.”

Allie Esslinger added “Section II is thrilled to be working with Dickie and the entire SAVE THE WORLD team as they create a truly unique story and showcase an exciting array of LGBTQ characters from across the spectrum. It’s always been our mission to provide filmmakers with opportunities to expand their work and audiences with new filmmakers to follow and support. Having had the support of Project Greenlight Digital Studios and GLAAD for this competition has allowed us to be an ally to both creators and consumers in the LGBTQ space.”

2016 SRIThe need for original, creative and diverse LGBTQ content is all too apparent when you analyze the findings within GLAAD’s annual entertainment industry studies.  As found within the 2015 Where We Are On TV report, only 25 (4%) of the 881 regular characters expected to have appeared within the 2015-2016 broadcast primetime season were identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.  And of the 126 releases counted from the major film studios within the 2016 Studio Responsibility Index, only 22 (17.5%) contained LGBT characters.  In partnering to create the SEE YOURSELF digital series initiative, GLAAD advanced its mission of accelerating acceptance by pushing for more LGBTQ characters and substantive storylines.

Russia Blocks The Country’s Most Popular LGBTQ Site

Russia Blocks The Country’s Most Popular LGBTQ Site

Russia‘s most popular LGBTQ website, BlueSystem.ru, has been blocked throughout the country without warning according to its administrators, reports The Moscow Times.

A court ruling banned the site, visited by approximately 100,000 people a day, although the reason for that ban has not been published on the court’s website and the owners of the site say they were given no explanation. They also say they were not able to defend themselves in court.

“The Kremlin is afraid of gays,” the website’s team wrote on social media. “On the eve of the State Duma elections, the Kremlin mobilized its repressive machine and blocked the most popular Runet gay site.”

Russia has become increasingly aggressive against their LGBTQ population. In 2013, they passed a “gay propaganda law,” which has made simply talking about homosexuality a punishable offense.

The bill states that “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships” are a class of materials that must not be distributed among minors. The term is defined as materials that are “[aimed] at causing minors to form non-traditional sexual predispositions, notions of attractiveness of non-traditional sexual relationships, distorted ideas about the equal social value of traditional and non-traditional sexual relationships, or imposing information about non-traditional sexual relationships which raises interest in such relationships insofar as these acts do not amount to a criminal offence.”

This has been enforced in such a way that gay activists often get assaulted and arrested for demonstrating for their rights.

“LGBT resources get blocked as part of a broader crackdown on freedom of expression online,” Tanya Lokshina, Russia program director for Human Rights Watch, told The Daily Beast. “The authorities are also attempting to shut down Children-404 (Deti-404), an online support group for LGBT teens.”

‘American Male’ Offers Dark Look At Hyper-Masculinity And Internalized Homophobia

‘American Male’ Offers Dark Look At Hyper-Masculinity And Internalized Homophobia

american-male

A new short film that looks at hyper-masculinity and internalized homophobia in American culture has just been released and it’s pretty intense.

American Male tells the story of a college student who feels the urgent need to prove his masculinity to both himself and his fraternity brothers. In the process, however, he is forced to suppress his own sexual desires, and bury the parts of his personality that might be seen as too “feminine.”

The film is directed by Michael Rohrbaugh and is one of the three winners from MTV’s Look Different Creator Competition, which invited filmmakers to submit pieces exploring social privilege and how certain aspects our identities give us advantages (and disadvantages) in life.

“I would like for viewers to gain a better understanding of what life feels like in the closet,” Rohrbaugh told the Huffington Post. “I also hope they’ll reflect upon their own lives and think about falsehoods that might be holding them back.”

Chelsea Manning Sentenced to Two Weeks Solitary Confinement for Attempted Suicide

Chelsea Manning has been sentenced to 14 days of solitary confinement for her July suicide attempt and for being in possession of ‘prohibited property.’

Manning and her attorney, Chase Strangio at the ACLU, confirmed the news on Twitter.

Said Chelsea in a statement posted to Tumblr on Friday:

“My three member disciplinary board took place today.

I presented evidence and was allowed to question witnesses through the board president. The hearing lasted four hours. There was a break for lunch.

I waited nervously for the board to vote. I received the decision after 30 minutes.

I was acquitted of the “Resisting The Force Cell Move Team” charge.

I was found guilty of the “Conduct Which Threatens” charge. This charge was for the suicide attempt.

I was found guilty of the “Prohibited Property” charge, which was for an unmarked copy of “Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy,” by Gabriella Coleman.

My punishment is 14 days in solitary confinement. 7 of those days are “suspended.” If I get in trouble in the next six months, those seven days will come back.

Of the ruling, Manning added, “I am feeling hurt. I am feeling lonely. I am embarrassed by the decision. I don’t know how to explain it. I am touched by your warm messages of love and support. This comforts me in my time of need.”

Fusion reports:

Manning’s 14-day sentence is lighter than what some feared would be an indefinite stretch of solitary confinement after her July suicide attempt. In August, supporters delivered petitions containing over 100,000 names to Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning, demanding “adequate and humane treatment for both [Manning’s] gender dysphoria and her suicide attempt.” Manning had previously stated that lack of access to appropriate care for her gender dysphoria was a contributing factor in decision to end her life.

On September 9, Manning began a hunger strike to protest her prison conditions. She ended it five days later, after the military announced it would grant her access to gender transition surgery.

uganda pride

Based on social media activity of LGBT activists in Uganda, it appears that a gay pride parade scheduled for this Saturday in the capital city of Kampala will go ahead as planned despite threats from a senior government official in the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Simon Lokodo, a cabinet minister in charge of ethics and integrity, said that police will arrest organizers of the parade because the event had not been cleared by the authorities. Lokodo also said that the event would offend the country’s laws.

The statement reads in part:

“The organizers of the planned Gay Parade on Saturday 24th September 2016 are advised to stop their activities immediately or otherwise they will be arrested and prosecuted in the courts of law. The public is called upon to refrain from joining and participating in Gay activities.

“I therefore, call upon all stakeholders, Ministries, Departments, Local Governments and other agencies of Government, Faith Based Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and the Media fraternity to join Government to curb the escalating levels of immorality by upholding and integrating the National Ethical values of Uganda into their daily life and work.”

According to the Associated Press, Frank Mugisha, a gay rights leader, says he had been awaiting police authorization to hold a parade this weekend at a beach on Lake Victoria, Kampala.

Seemingly undeterred by the prospect of arrest, Ugandan LGBT activists took to social media to share their determination to celebrate pride on Saturday the 24th.

Last month, we reported that Simon Lokodo allegedly “threatened to mobilize a mob and a large police group to beat up anyone who shows up for pride.”

In 2012, Rebecca Kadaga (above right), the Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, sponsored legislation that would have implemented the death penalty for homosexuality.  President Yoweri Museveni signed the law in 2014. However, it was later deemed to be unconstitutional.

Scott Lively Wants Donald Trump to Implement Russian-Style Anti-Gay Laws in the U.S. – LISTEN

scott lively

Scott Lively says he hopes to see Russian-style anti-gay laws implemented in the U.S. should Donald Trump win the November election.

In 2014, Lively was profiled in the Human Rights Campaign’s “The Export of Hate” report. He has been accused of crimes against humanity for inciting anti-gay hatred in Uganda and aiding in the passing of their “Kill the Gays” bill.

Lively shared his hopes for what a Trump presidency would like for gay people while speaking with fellow religious extremist Mike Heath of MaineResistance.

Calling the spread of anti-gay propaganda laws in Russia “one of the proudest achievements of my career,” Lively said:

“I wish we would be able to duplicate that all over the world. That would really solve the problem.

“Frankly, if Trump wins in November then he could turn out to be like Putin in Russia and push back Marxism like Putin did and invite the church to come back in an guide the culture, like Putin did. He delegates, that’s his way of governing and his way of doing business and I think he is going to delegate to the church the task of shaping the culture.

“The culture war has always been a battle between cultural Marxists and Christians, always, especially homosexuals among the cultural Marxists and [Trump is] pushing the cultural Marxists back and that’s his primary target, political correctness, you know, the whole slate of the hard left agenda, he’s just pushing back. And that’s going to create a vacuum that the church is naturally going to fill because we’re the ones who were guiding the culture before the Marxists took it away from us.”

In 2014, Lively said that homosexuality is “an infection worse than murder.”

Donald Trump Doubles Down on Anti-Equality Agenda; Hires Anti-LGBTQ Rick Santorum

Donald Trump Doubles Down on Anti-Equality Agenda; Hires Anti-LGBTQ Rick Santorum

Oops, he did it again: Donald Trump once again doubled down on his anti-equality agenda, hiring notoriously anti-LGBTQ politician Rick Santorum as an adviser.

Santorum is infamous for his anti-LGBTQ positions, including his long-standing opposition to marriage equality, beginning with a push to ban same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania. During his 2016 presidential effort, he said that “restoring” marriage would be the most important thing he could do in his campaign.

Moreover, Santorum believes that sexual orientation is a choice, supports so-called “conversion therapy,” and opposes adoption by same-sex couples.

Trump has surrounded himself with anti-LGBTQ proponents, including Tony Perkins, Michele Bachmann, James Dobson and more.

Others who were named to the advisory council include Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, who earlier this year signed a legislative attack on LGBTQ college students into law. Brownback has also issued an executive order that encouraged discrimination against LGBT Kansans in the name of religion and rescinded non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ state employees.

Also named to the advisory council were Reps. Andrew Harris, R-Md.; Steve Chabot, R-Ohio; Mike Kelly, R-Pa.; and Sean Duffy, R-Wis.; all of whom earned scores of zero percent on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard, which rates members of Congress on their support for LGBTQ equality.

Earlier this year, HRC released a video highlighting Santorum’s record on a number of LGBTQ issues including his opposition to non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and his support for harmful “conversion therapy.” For more on Santorum’s anti-LGBTQ record, visit hrc.org/2016RepublicanFacts.

HRC Takes Action on Injectable Estrogen Shortage

HRC Takes Action on Injectable Estrogen Shortage

HRC is deeply concerned about the potential impact of a shortage of injectable estrogen on transgender women and others who utilize the drug. This shortage exist for both Delestrogen and its generic counterpart estradiol valerate.  Because hormone therapy is such a critical component of many transgender individual’s gender affirmation process, lack of access to these vital medications has the potential to pose a serious health threat to transgender women.

The shortage began 18 months ago when the 40 mg dosage of injectable estrogen went on the drug shortage list and has not since returned to the marketplace.  This is the highest dosage available and the one most frequently prescribed to transgender women.  Doctors then began doubling up on dosages of the 20 mg injectables, which have become scarce this summer.  While estrogen in pill or patch form continue to remain available, the injectable form is preferred by many trans women and health professionals are concerned that these women may turn to unregulated sources such as the street or black market online pharmacies that ship drugs from other countries.

HRC reached out to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials to express concern about the shortage and to learn what the agency is currently doing to address the ongoing problem. In addition, HRC partnered with the National Center for Transgender Equality on a letter to FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf urging that the agency expedite review of information necessary to approve the drug and bring the shortage to an end.

In the revised version of Creating Equal Access to Quality Health Care for Transgender Patients: Transgender-Affirming Hospital Policies released in May of this year, HRC led efforts to add a recommended policy to ensure that patients maintain access to their hormone therapy when admitted to a hospital.  In addition, because of the importance of hormone prescriptions for transgender people, HRC included a special section on transgender medical needs in its new resource guide for pharmacists and pharmacy staff on providing LGBTQ-inclusive care and services.
