Congressional Candidate Misty Plowright: ‘I’m a Trans Woman, but That’s Not Why I’m Running for Office’

Congressional Candidate Misty Plowright: ‘I’m a Trans Woman, but That’s Not Why I’m Running for Office’

misty plowright

The months following one of the LGBTQ community’s most important legal victories in a generation have not exactly been easy.

Small advancements for the trans community were met with a fierce conservative backlash. State Supreme Courts challenged the U.S. Supreme Court against equality. Anti-LGBTQ violence took on historic proportions, and crushed all kinds of gut-wrenching records.

It’s reassuring, then, when we see history being made for the right reasons.

Last week, two women — both transgender, both named Misty — made history by becoming the nation’s first openly transgender major-party candidates to run for national office.

In Utah, Misty Snow, 30, won the Democratic primary, and in November she will challenge Tea Party-favorite and Ted Cruz-endorser Sen. Mike Lee, who’s running for re-election to a second term in office.

The other Misty, Misty Plowright, is a 33-year-old Army veteran who works in IT and lives in Colorado Springs with her wife of nine years. She won the Democratic primary and will now face five-term Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn in the House of Representatives.

“Neither women,” reported The Washington Post “sought to make their gender identities a campaign issue, instead focusing on Bernie Sanders-approved progressive issues like a $15 minimum wage and getting money out of politics.”

Friday, Plowright wrote an op-ed for The Hill and explained why she won the democratic nomination by more than 16 percentage points: “I won my race on issues, not because I’m trans,” she said.

She is a candidate who just happens to be trans.

misty3Plowright ran on a progressive platform, which include election and campaign finance reforms, taxing the wealthy, climate change, protection for LGBT Americans and income inequality. She wants to “create a living wage which automatically adjusts with inflation to keep people who work full time all year from falling below 70% of the national median income.”

And that is the reason why people voted for her.

She knows the road ahead will be tough. Challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn in Colorado’s most conservative district in the state, will be an uphill battle. But even if she doesn’t win, she says that just being the first trans woman to be a candidate for a major American party is already worth it.

“Regardless of how the election turns out in November,” she writes, “a meaningful impact has already been made by my candidacy. I have received letter after letter from trans people across the country who are inspired by my run. It gives them hope in this hostile world that they, too, can succeed and are not condemned to a life of misery simply because of their sexuality.”

When she was growing up she couldn’t relate to anybody. Besides “Jerry Springer shows,” she says, ” there were no examples of gender-nonconforming people. There were no role models. There was no indication that there were other people like me.”

Plowright knows the significance of this moment: “If nothing else comes from my run for office, I am happy it has brought hope to others like myself who may be questioning — or perhaps already know — who they are. While this is history in the making, the fact I am a trans woman is not why I am running, nor is it what I have made the focus of my campaign.”

You can read her full essay here.

NBA Threats Likely to Prompt Special Session to Repeal North Carolina’s HB2: Lawmakers

NBA Threats Likely to Prompt Special Session to Repeal North Carolina’s HB2: Lawmakers

North Carolina’s anti-LGBT HB2, which has cost the state billions in dollars, wasn’t addressed in the state legislature’s last session but for a tiny insufficient change which did nothing to change the discriminatory nature of the law.

North CarolinaMany lawmakers believe they will address it before January, the Winston-Salem Journal reports:

“I think there’s a really good chance of a special session,” state Rep. Pricey Harrison, D-Guilford, said. “You really can’t avoid how much it has hurt the state, and everyone knows there’s more fallout to come.”

The drive for a special session, according to a number of Republican and Democratic legislators: the NBA’s threat to move the 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte if the law stands.

“I don’t think the NBA can wait until January,” state Rep. Chris Sgro, D-Guilford, said. “If they’re going to move the game, they need to make that decision well before then. Given that, I would not be surprised if we ended up in a special session well before the end of the year.”

Sgro, who is also the executive director of the LGBT advocacy group Equality North Carolina, said full repeal is the only acceptable outcome for the law.

When a sniper attack interrupted what had been a peaceful protest in downtown Dallas on Thursday night, a gay policeman was among the officers murdered and wounded during the attack.

The Dallas Morning News reports that 39-year-old Jesus Retana had worked as a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) police officer for a decade.

He’s currently at home recovering with his husband, Andrew Moss, according to The New Civil Rights Movement:

Retana, above left, is pictured with his husband, Andrew Moss. Moss was behind an effort to get DART to add insurance benefits for same-sex partners that began in 2012.

Retana and Moss were married in 2008 in California. Moss, also a former DART police officer, left law enforcement in 2010 due to health problems.

On Friday, the queer-run Black Lives Matter group posted a statement on its website, condemning the murders of five police officers in Dallas as a “tragedy,” and repeated its “call for justice, transparency and accountability” in the investigations into two deadly shootings of black men by police this week.

David Yost Calls Bryan Cranston A “Homophobe” Because Of Comments From 2009

David Yost Calls Bryan Cranston A “Homophobe” Because Of Comments From 2009

Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 1.47.57 PM

Paste-eating nerds everywhere are celebrating the fact that Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston is set to star in the new (and much darker) reboot of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, but one former cast member is far from pleased.

David Yost, who played the role of Blue Power Ranger Billy, recently took to Twitter to call comments Cranston made seven years ago “not cool,” adding, “I’m not a fan of homophobes.” (The June 22 tweet has since been taken down.)

What’s all the upset about? Well, in 2009, Cranston was interviewed by IGN, discussing his past work as a voice actor for the series and having the Blue Ranger named after him.

In that interview, he cracked a joke about being named after the Blue Ranger, saying it was a “problem” because Billy was the “fey” one.

In the past, Yost has claimed he was harassed on set for being gay, and says he quit because he was called “faggot” one too many times. Nevertheless, we think he’s reading way too much into Cranston’s joke here. The actor has been a very vocal advocate for marriage equality, telling GLAAD that those who oppose same-sex marriage are “absurd” and must “end this silliness.”

Here’s the section of the IGN interview that has Yost so upset:

Cranston: They actually named one of the Power Rangers after me.

Gilligan: Yeah?!

Cranston: The Blue Power Ranger’s last name is Cranston.

IGN: [Laughs] Wow, that’s pretty funny.

Gilligan: That’s an awesome story!

Cranston: He’s the fey one, that’s the problem.

Do you think too much is being made of Cranston’s quote? Weigh in in the comments below.

In the meantime, watch Cranston’s segment for HRC’s Americans For Marriage Equality:
